For MLB 14 owners, playing online will soon prove impossible just a year after release.
Wow, so games only have a one year lifecycle now? That's terrible any way you slice it.
if nobody plays then they can make a case but just to push people to buy the new one is not cool. good thing you can still play offline
Asking for a game boycott right there. Better lower your sales expectations for MLB 15 now Sony...
Seriously, MLB the show fans should raise hell so this doesn't become a trend.
It might be servers just in europe though look at the source. I cant imagine an american baseball game doing well over. Bigger news is that socom is officially dead and you can no longer go onle for ANY resistance games.
If it's just in Europe then I should let you know, they don't actually sell this game at retail over here. It's terribly unpopular in the UK. Hardcoregamer missreporting things, again! It would be worth reaching out an asking them to clarify if this is just UK, or Europe, or worldwide, but for the moment it's only on the UK Playstation site, so it seems unlikely they are shutting the servers down for the USA. If they were, it probably wouldn't be the UK site providing that information.
'so games only have a one year lifecycle now? ' Sports games have always had a one year lifecycle.
I have friends who still play Madden 2012 online. Not everybody can afford to buy roster update every year.
Doesn't matter, you don't take down the severs a year after the game launches. You're basically saying that if you want to play online you're just going to have buy our game every year. Kind of messed up.
People are disagreeing but the NBA2k games die like a month after the next one releases, and I think its the same for Fifa People think this is bad because they're not used to the online structure of sports games. Most people that play them buy them every year, it doesn't make sense financially to keep servers up for the minority that haven't moved on (plus they wouldn't even be able to support the old game any more)
What Snipes said. I don't doubt that some people keep playing the older games, but I would bet that most sports game fans do move to the newest one every year.
People shouldn't be forced.....I agree with peoples angst.
@HeavenlySnipes Fifa does not die down after a month
Well let's be honest here. The servers for MLB the show are pure trash. The game is basically umplayable online because of the lag and delay. Don't say it is my internet because I have150down 50upload and my friend has the same thing and we live like 15 minutes away still unplayable. They need to invest in new servers because I never had this problem with 2k baseball it was usually playable, 2k basketball is another story however
That doesn't make much sense because when you play 1 on 1 games it's always peer to peer, not routed through Sony's servers. Maybe the netcode is bad on the newer version, but it would not be the servers, causing your issue. I haven't played the PS4 game, but when I played MLB 13 on PS3 it was always free of any visible lag. Perhaps it's a circumscribed netcode issue causing your difficulty.
You're better than this sony. Not happy one bit.
they actually arent
this is what happens when devs turn game into a service. they expect you throw away hundreds of dollars only to later say they are making the game obsolete and to do the same thing for their new version.
I was going to buy MLB14 to play Co-op with a friend online so this is BS.
I have been so disappointed with Sony's last 2 MLB The Show titles I have gone back to playing MLB 2K13 which servers are STILL running. I played an online match last night. It even still has a pretty good community. Sony FORCING their customers to have to upgrade to the next iteration if they want to play online (Which has always been crap due to either Sony's servers or a consistent issue with every MLB The Show title). I have sworn off MLB The Show until they make a PS4 version from the ground up (Not ported from the PS3) and actually make better servers.
especially for the prices they charge for them these days
Thats terrible Sony, Not everyone grabs the lastest version the day it hits.
That really sucks for people still playing 14. I guess with The Show 15 releasing soon Sony wants to promote that more instead to it's users. That's really concerning when you look at things like PSNow and other pushes in the digital space. And the cover of The Show 15 has Yasiel Puig from the LA Dodgers!? Instant fail!
I don't agree with this at least let the servers stay on for 5 years.
The majority of the MLB The Show fanbase upgrade every year. For those gamers that dont really play online and are more into just casually playing the single player modes like Road to the Show, Franchise and Season Mode....they are not affected by this. Also, thanks to the introduction of Share Play, older MLB The Show games dont even need an online anymore. You can just Share Play and virtually coach co-op against any of your friends whenever you want. If we're talking about games like Uncharted, Killzone or The Last of Us, I agree the servers need to stay on long term. But for a yearly sports franchise, you dont need 5 year servers. Lets be realistic. Its 2015. How many MLB The Show fans are still playing MLB09 The Show?
Some things you can defend...this is not one of them. This is NOT for the gamers.
@Lifeinnz Im not defending anything. I understand the principle as to why this would upset some people. But yearly sports games arent like other games that only come out once every few years and need a longterm online. For me personally, Im a big baseball fan and my friends and I all update MLB The Show every year, so this really isnt an issue for me. If some other MLB The Show fans dont agree, thats fine. I accept that my opinion is in the minority on this specific issue.
Games like MLB deserve long online service. A game like Mlb deserves at least a five year commitment, the biggest reason is that this game comes out every year and not all gamers play/buy it every year. If this is what they plan on doing going forward they might not see my business. @Chris a lot of us don't agree with your logic sorry.
One baseball games dont sell anymore case in point mlb 2k 2. Not a whole lot of ppl are playing mlb the show rite now. But 1yr later Damn Sony is the struggle that real? But it does suck 4those who still play it
Well that sucks, but that just further proves the point - all sports games should have one or two releases each generation. As for roster and visual updates, they should release yearly at $20 retail or DLC.
As much as it suck it's in the Terms of Service.. "they hold the right to discontinue online services whenever they deem necessary" theoretically they could turn off the servers anytime they want.. and I'm talking every online game... not just this game read the Terms of Service... they can turn it off the day after you buy the game if they really wanted to be dicks
I don't think anyone here is saying it's illegal. They're saying it's a dick move to deem it "necessary" a year after a game's release.
I not saying anything about legality at all. I'm simply stating that the company reserves all rights to discontinue their online services whenever they want. If people would actually read the Terms of Service they would know and not be surprised. I'm not questioning it being a "dick" move.. It is a dick move.. It's just so baffling that people find this to be surprising. Welcome to 2015... Money matter more than anything.
"I not saying anything about legality at all... I'm simply stating that the company reserves all rights to discontinue their online services whenever they want." Pray tell what kind of rights they are reserving? Are they... *legal* rights, perchance? Are the Terms of Service a part of a *legal* contract? I'll bet they are. The reason people are surprised by this is because discontinuing online support one year after a release is such blatantly bad form that it's a bit shocking to those who hold Sony in high regard around these parts.
Sony reserve the right to be dicks
For me, I could care less because I never play anything online on the show. I only play franchise mode and RTS. For the people who do play online and don't buy the show every year I would be outraged!
Better jump on those MP trophies if you haven't already, peeps. :) This really isn't anything new. The servers for 13 got shut down right around when 14 came out. Not saying it's acceptable, but it's been going on for awhile now. lol
This doesn't send a good message to fans of The Show
Wasn't the online troubled with lag? I've heard people say it was borderline unplayable anyway.
Sony is known to do things like this because they know their fans will defend them and just suck it up.
Yes. These fans are clearly defending them and not posting comments expressing their disgust. -_-
Played the "because its Sony its alright" card a tad prematurely mate. I dont see many here defending it. Quite the opposite in fact.
This is literally the first time they will have shut down servers for a game after a year, if this is true.
im buying 15 the show but this is f***** up. no wait, if they do this then i am Not buying 15 the show.
The only possible conclusion I can draw from this is that Sony are desperate for money so they're forcing fans to upgrade. You can disagree if you want but unless you offer me another reason for Sony doing this in a reply then your disagree is empty and means nothing.
Let me get this straight... You think that Sony believes that doing this will give them some incredible influx of cash? You don't really think that, do you? This isn't cool, but try to stay at least a little realistic.
I could see after 2 years, but 1 year? that's just bogus.
That's not cool at all. I don't even like MLB but still, uncool beans.
Thats just crap Sony. I'm not an online gamer, I dont know how long servers normally last but it seems to me this is just forcing people to buy the game every year. Servers for Sport games should last at least 2 years absolute minimum but more like 3 so people arent so pressured to upgrade. Disappointing, poor practice.
How reliable is this site? I don't see any sources or anyone else reporting this.
I wish they would source this stuff.
Found a more reliable source: http://uk.playstation.com/p...
The show is hands down the best Baseball game in the market... still, that was terrible, taking the servers down after 1 year, that is so wrong...
MLB 14 online is plagued with bugs to this day anyway.
Never play online, but I do use it for accessing the vault. Darn
I think a two year period of grace would strike the balance between humility and practicality, hell 18 months bare minimum. I lost most of my paid DLC content with the Gran Turismo 5 Academy Edition after the online scrappage of the game. I'll always remember that for being managed poorly and so soon after the complete edition was released.
That sorta of sucks, but it also depends on how many users are even using the servers for the online part. Financially it might not be worth it for Sony to keep it operating. Though this is one of the reasons why we rarely play any online components of games we buy.
@pink But you all have to pay to play online now so how is it not financially viable this crap should not happen at all only when the ps5 releases should they consider shutting servers down for ps4 games. This is the reason i stick mainly to pc as i can still play games over 10 years old online still.
Wow, I did not expect this from Sony, EA maybe but not Sony.
Doesn't Fifa do this. It is a dodgy tactic to get people to buy the next
They need more servers for Driveclub. lol Greatness Awaits* *Offline
It's not like it was ever playable online anyway.
I just bought it new in store for $10. Crappy news but I'm glad to hear that it sucked online anyways. As a gamer I'm getting sick of being treated like an idiot. This is just another example of the treatment. I think there has to be some consumer watch dogs out there getting involved in these types of blatant abuses.
Shovelling people off MLB 14 eh? I'm still not buying it full price. They did the same sh*t with GT6 because of slow sales.
sony can get away with anything
That sucks. I just got mlb 14 a couple months ago and I was going to get into since I never played a baseball game before. Guess it'll just be offline only.
Reminds me of buying the Orange Box on PS3 to play TF2 then the servers getting pulled out from under me. Basterds EA.
All companies / developers should be legally forced to patch games so they still can be played p2p when they close the servers. Its annoying all these online trophies that are now impossible to get after shutdown.
