Nintendo and Indies Embrace Each Other, Ready to Challenge Sony

Sony has reigned as the undisputed champion of indie games and developers this generation. Many studios have brought their games to PS4, PS3 and PS Vita, and it doesn’t appear to be slowing down. Soon, however, Sony may have some serious competition, and it isn’t from Microsoft, it’s from Nintendo.

Well thank goodness. Considering "Nintendo" and "innovative" were synonymous for so many years, the Wii U should be the platform that is home to indie games.

I've been seeing some really impressive Indie games coming to the Wii U lately. I can't wait for Don't Starve, Octodad, and Affordable Space Adventures. Those are just a few at the top of my Indie list.

I love Don't Starve. Such a fantastic game!

wonderfulmonkeyman1343d ago

Trine Enchanted Edition and Freedom Planet, as well.

We've also got Mighty No. 9 coming up alongside a sequel to Azure Striker Gunvolt.[one of my favorite Mega Man-style indies]

A Hat In Time, Shantae and a couple of Oddworld games as well.

It's too late for this move Nintendo. But it is some, idk about the majority.

They better start embracing 3rd party devs if you know what i mean
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

eyeofcore1343d ago

They would if they were there, though look at 3DS and support from Japanese developers yet major western developers are not there despite a platform having nearly or even over 50 million unique users by now.

In the end its about competence of developers and publishers when comes to supporting a platform and selling their games as in this world you reap what you sow and those out of touch don't seem to get that.

In the end its all about presence, if Capcom can sell an up port of a 3DS game and reach over half a million sales on Wii U with just being there and doing some proper marketing then other can do that too if they do it right.

They got away with shitty ports on PS3, that won't work on Wii U.

wonderfulmonkeyman1343d ago

They tried using content-deficient ports of games that don't have their install base on Nintendo consoles to sell themselves during the Wii U's first year, instead of taking the less risky route of designing new IP's to better fit the system and appeal anew to its install base.

It blew up in their faces, and they ran.

Better luck next gen, I guess, but if they go with ports again then it won't matter even if Nintendo has the most powerful system at that time; no one's going to switch to a Nintendo system for a third party game that they're used to buying on Sony/Micro systems, or that they've already played elsewhere.

Indies should be focusing on Wii as much as, if not more so than Sony and MS's consoles. With the huge void left by third parties, there is massive sales potential. And the touch screen gamepad also lends itself to the style of many of these games.

Sure the userbase isn't great, but its sales are remaining steady, and with the release of games like Star Fox and Zelda, the sales will receive massive spikes

" if not more so than Sony and MS's consoles" mean the consoles that have more power and have sold more?

Um.....ok then.

That just doesn't make sense to state such a thing to a indie developer that likely doesn't have the funding to NOT put games on other systems. That just makes no sense.

There is no void, Wii U gamers are not buying 3rd party games....its legit that simple.

Though many are citing bad ports...the reality is most gamers don't just read reviews and not buy games...

Yet the numerous 360 and PC ports sold on the PS3 despite PS3 being in last at the time, despite them even been lessor then the PC and 360 versions most of the times.

....yet still sold and still where made.

The reality is, Wii was made closer to the Gamecube then to the PS3...

Wii U was made closer to the 360 and PS3 then to the PS4 and XONE..

Its very clear Nintendo does not want 3rd party support as they are creating a system purposely LESSOR to avoid support from 3rd parties that might be shared from Sony or MS systems.

They may not know PS4 or XONE's specs...but its clear they know it won't be PS3 or 360's specs lol. They are making this lessor as to legit force developers to not port, but to make default exclusives like they tried last gen ala Red Steel, Zach and Wiki, Just Dance, No More Heros etc.

By doing this, they make it so making a port isn't an option, but they must create a title only on Wii and not on others...

Some publishers tried ie COD4 on Wii years later, the game was ugly and a mess. But they can only do so much with the wii's hardware limitations.

It sold poorly and was received pretty bad, thus...3rd parties didn't support Wii with those ports, they instead made Wii games with motion in mind...

Problem is...the wiis crowd know nothing of those ips (in terms of owning a wii only anyway)

Thus...when Sony came out with Eyetoy, Move, MS Kinect etc

Those once default motion games went too. ios, move, kinect etc took over that market.

Now Wii U is trying to get support for IPs not really known on the Wii or Wii U based off of that choice.

Batman series, Assassins Creed, Mass Effect etc are not know by the Nintendo crowd, but that isn't those publishers fault.

They are not just going to make a bunch of default exclusive, to some teams exclusively for Wii or Wii U...just because.

Neither Sony nor MS have that treatment with 3rd parties.

So not only is Wii and Wii U harder to develop for...its lessor then the main systems...

What developer is going to make a separate team, on a harder system that yields LESS SALES? Thats insane to actually expect such a thing.

Bayonetta shows that even when Nintendo publishes a means nothing to many Nintendo fans that don't know other series.

Whats sad is the first was even ported on Wii U....Bayonetta 2 still sold bad.

I think people who own Wii's ,Wii U's etc are at a point where they just buy them for Nintendo only titles. Zelda, Star Fox, Mario Kart, Animal Crossing etc.

I just can't blame publishers and developers in this regard. They are just to not create on a system that is harder and also has the least sales.

They sorta need to get paid. Would you lose money on the Wii or Wii U knowing it won't even sell?

I get why legit most developers don't want to create on a Nintendo console. Mind you..I own a 3DS and still plan to get a Wii U..that is just from a business and gamer's perspective.

Also read what sites and analyst have been saying regarding its lack of support

Mind you..I agree with what they are saying. Nintendo is expecting and asking a bit too much.

When Square, Capcom, Rockstar had FF, RE, GTA etc on PS systems....

MS FOUGHT to make sure they were on 360 XB etc.

360 doesn't have Japanese games? Well the paid to get some timed games, even opened a studio in japan.

Point is, they seeked the support by actively going after those titles and publishers!

Though I don't care for MS practices, they are at least TRYING to get that support and they now have it.

FF, GTA, MGS etc are now seen as a normal thing to NOT being solely on a PS system and the XB crowd buys them no problem.

Its normal for that to be on XB.

Nintendo is not actually doing that, they are not even asking 3rd parties about what they would want in the system.

Sounds to me like Nintendo is actually going head to head against 3rd parties as suppose to working WITH 3rd parties.

MS made 360....made it with 256mb ram, Epic stated 512mb would be better for U3 engine.....thus, MS put in 512mb.

Sony put in 4GB of ram in PS4.....developers stated 8gb would better....Sony puts in 8gb of ram.

I really would like to know or see a link where Nintendo had a developer help them with Wii U...sounds to me like they made it for themselves, not for 3rd parties. They seem to not care regarding support from them.

Mind you, PSVita is selling badly and has little support....yet Sony is funding the RE-REV2 and SSFIV ports .

Nintendo can do more....
