PC World :: PlayStation 3 Review

Expensive for a game console, but a great bargain for a console plus a Blu-ray Disc player, the PS3 is worth the wait.

The story is too old to be commented.

The PS3 is NOT more technically superior to that of the xbox 360....i really don't know where he is getting this information. If it is superior we should be able to see superior games but THERE ARE NOT ANY that surpass what 360 is offering right now!Maybe in a few years we will see but until then it should NOT be classed as superior!i thought PS3 was going to be a cut above the competition when i first heard about it but that was lies!PS3 = bad investment in my opinion...its just too expensive and too risky...needs more AAA exclusives, risky next gen vid format 2....i can see HD-DVD taking off but not so much blue ray. When PS3 comes out with a AAA title that is truely next gen i may be interested but until then i could not care!!!!!!

"The PS3 looks like an expensive box at first, but seems less so when you compare its cost to the cost of a stand-alone Blu-ray player, a high-end PC graphics card, the Xbox 360 with its HD-DVD add-on, or even a Media Center PC.

-- Danny Allen"

So, if you really basing your comments on technical comparison...the whole web is approving of PS3's superiority, bluray is in there, CELL is in there, detachable HDD is supported, you can install OS of your choice,. blue-tooth is supported, PSP can be Wi-Fi-ly connected, around 8000 games are already supported on day-1(360 can never compete there) due to unprecedent backward compatibility potential.......so in every aspect PS3 goes much ahead of 360.

PLUS,

...if you talk games, then PS3 has procedural synthesis based games in its launch window, and I mean 'launch window' buddy...like MotorStorm, Heavenly Sword, WarHawk and Lair...all killer-apps, all true next-gen (and IGN states MotorStorm to be the first true step towards next-gen), the likes of which 360 hasn't been able to provide over an year now HaHaHa !!!, and yeah only gears?!...Hah, with only beautiful graphics it doesn't really get there, so all you say is your own close, personnal mumblings, for critics and system reviewers all around the world agree on PS3 superiority.

Aren't you tired of drinking Sony's kool aid yet? How many of Sony's lies are you willing to take before you say no more? We all know that Sony's pre-launch hype was just that...hype, so why don't you wait until you see the actual games before calling them killer apps. That way you won't be as disappointed. Remember RFOM? Not much of a killer app was it.

a blue-ray player, to a hd-dvd player????

simple, cos the blu-ray would g3t pWnD!!!

Bhai3700d ago

Each PS3 sold is a Blu-Ray player sold ! so mill. means a million Blu-ray players. While stand-alone HD-DVD players don't make anything about 3 or 4 years, the only hope is with getting into 360, and just estimate the cost of a 360 system including an HD-DVD rom that can't even play games...hmmm, a 599$ system worth nothing...no deachable HDD, simple backward compatibilty, mediocre games and DVd playback for games(blue dragon is already being released on 3 DVDs), so 360 with HD-DVD would be 599$ paid for junk !

"While stand-alone HD-DVD players don't make anything about 3 or 4 years". What does that mean? Maybe I just don't understand your english, but I'm guessing you mean that standalone HD-DVD players won't be available for 3-4 years. If you believe that you're an r-tard. HD-DVD players are already out and there are more HD-DVD movies available right now than Blu-Ray. The early reviews say that HD-DVD movies are of better quality. And because HD-DVD is much cheaper to make than BR, I think more movie studios will be releasing their movies on HD-DVD, just like game developers are deciding to develop for the X360. It's looking like Blu-Ray will go the way of all the other Sony formats.

All pro's an d cons aside:
XBOX360 is as good as PS3!! and vise versa
but the software (xboxlive, AAA titles, and cross platform titles) are now better on the XBOX360
The reviews are telling the facts. (www.gamerankings.com)

but on the hardware side :
The PS3 is a little better. (xbox360 has a better graphics chpset, more memory(yes more.. please don't debate the fact that sony has 512 on their d=fact sheet..just ask ps3/xbox360 develophers what that means if you don't know), and better video compression (VC1) on hd-dvd) compared to bluray)
but overall still the ps3 beats the xbox360 on the hardware side (by a small margin).

How??:

the finishing touches of the ps3 are auwesome!.
no sound
beauty of a box
My whife would alow this ps3 in the living room (it looks dandy modern)
somehow one will be able to make use of the hardware in a far better way hopefully

and Blu-ray would probably win because of the powerhouses that back that up.
no doubt about that.. to bad game and OS software wont ever be there to make use of it as effective as software makes use of the xbox360 hardware platform.

ps3 software would probaly mostly use 40% of the ps3 hardware platform compared to the software that would be able to use of the xbox360 for 80%
(Microsoft just have their gameconsole facts better layed out for them.. sony just focused mostly on the media side )

A dutch review also found out that the linux of the ps3 linux version is performing like a pentium 3 800 mhz, (instead of the 3.2 Ghz ..of one core)..so no plusses there. Sony would be a fool to let the whole hardware power available for use with a open linux (ps3 supported or not) .
No way they will ever do that. it would kill their own business.

but the ps3 is not what I expected.
one reason: They said it would outperforme xbox360 by duoble or tripple numbers....
and the reality is that xbox360 outperformes it right now...even though they launched a year later....
my opionion:

PS3 for media and trend lovers.
xbox360 for hardcore gamers.

You obiously haven't got even the slightest technical insight.

"(xbox360 has a better graphics chpset"

I would agree with "an architecture more similar to the future of PC graphic cards" but for now the evidence of one "chipset" being superior to the other is only circumstantial -- for now the PS3 has 1080p and better shader games while the X360 games have less slowdown.

"more memory(yes more.. please don't debate the fact that sony has 512 on their d=fact sheet..just ask ps3/xbox360 develophers what that means if you don't know)"

Maybe you should ask them. Both consoles have 512MB of RAM (plus a bit of edRAM on X360 and internal chip memory on the Cell) and both consoles can access all of it from both their GPU and CPU. The PS3 has two banks with faster access for the CPU and more overall bandwidth, while the X360 benefits from a single memory bank (making life easier on developers) and reduced bandwidth needs because of the before mentioned edRAM.

"and better video compression (VC1) on hd-dvd) compared to bluray)"

An absolutely ridiculous comment with no truth in it at all. Both the Blu-Ray and HD-DVD specification demand full support for VC1, and both formats have movies released in that format. Because of the extra space available on Blu-Ray, the moviestudios have more of a real choice (and not just on paper) for codecs on Blu-Ray -- maybe that is why you are so misguided.

And btw, HD-DVD is not standard on X360 ;-)

"ps3 software would probaly mostly use 40% of the ps3 hardware platform compared to the software that would be able to use of the xbox360 for 80%"

You honestly don't have a clue, do you?

1. Any decent developer will always use almost 100% of the power in a given processor for projects like games -- it is his algorithms and methods that improve over time.
2. While finding suitable algorithms and methods for Cell might be more difficult than for the Xenon, the potential peak performance for Cell is undoubtedly higher, making your comparison pointless.

"(Microsoft just have their gameconsole facts better layed out for them.. sony just focused mostly on the media side )"

Since Sony (together with IBM and Toshiba) developed Cell, and Sony have a lot more experience and pedigree in console development, I just can't reason with your claim.

"and the reality is that xbox360 outperformes it right now..."

That depends on the eye of the beholder, as performance depends on what is measured. For instance, even with a full year of development on final dev kits, SC:DA suffers from slowdown. And even though the PS3 has games in 1080p (one at 60fps even), none has been released or confirmed in development for the X360. Ofcourse the same kind of arguments could be used the other way around.

What a great review! And XBOXERS all said PS3 was broken. Sounds like it's working fine now. Heavenly Sword will be the killer app that will stir even the most jaded 360 user. I can't wait to get one. But I have too. Darn! And just like what PS2 did for DVD. PS3 will do for Blu-ray! HD-DVD doesn't stand much of a chance really.

That is a nice review for Sony. I am not getting one. I will enjoy my 360 that's my preference. We all know by now that MS is here to stay. Unlike the SEGA comparison that I keep reading every now and then. Enjoy your PS3 and I will enjoy my 360 w/ Live. Sony may sell more units but it won't be in the numbers of the PS2. MS isn't going anywhere soon. So enjoy whatever system you purchase.
