Resident Evil Review - TXH

Neil writes "It’s now common place to see our favourite titles of yesteryear touched with the HD brush and thrown out there for a new generation of gamers to experience. It might not always work but Capcom obviously feel that the game which kickstarted a whole generation of gaming can still come off and appeal to a new breed of gamer, 20 years later.

But the question is, is the original Resident Evil something gamers still want to play?"

Every time I read one of these middling reviews of this game I realize that, not only have game development and design ideas taken a turn towards the mediocre over the last 15 years, but that gamers themselves now understand less about development decisions and ideas than they used to.

Seriously. Tough puzzles? The puzzles aren't in any way tough at all. Save points vs save everywhere like today's games really take any skill and atmosphere out of the games now.

Kids have ADD now. They can't beat simple puzzles/problems and they look at them as a negative.

ADD is what this author suffers from and the overall Pussification of video games over the last 15yrs

The puzzle part isn't the worst part for me, it's the idea of the camera angles being awkward and the original tank controls being unplayable. Both of these things actually work really well together, the tank controls offer a reliable way of traversing through the constantly changing camera while keeping the player on edge and the camera angles themselves are made to not only look gorgeous but to make the player feel uneasy about what's next.
It's like a modern review of Silent Hill 2 complaining about the fog obstructing your view too much, or the dark hallways and rooms being so dark that you can't see much, it just completely misses the point of the game and its design.

The only time i'm annoyed by the camera is when you have to run into a room on timer to push something before it changes and the cameras makes you run around in a small circle because it flips the direction on you.

That is the only time in my time where i'm like this is annoying and awful.

To any real gamer that's been around for a while, this game is a god send. I remember playing and beating it at 8 years old. I'm now 27 and I'm enjoying it immensely.

It's odd to judge a game like this.

As a game it's really good, and the 5-6 out of 10's can seem a little harsh

but as a remaster, it's a straight up lazy cash in of a 2002 Gamecube game made with little effort and has a pretty high price tag of £15.99. So the lower scores in that sense don't seem so unfair

I don't think all things considered and the effort made on Capcoms part a 7/10 is a ridiculous score, I think the love of a cherished (and very good) remake can blind people

BlackTar187997d ago

i almost completely disagree with you.

Okay then, I can live with that

The review should be on the quality of the game itself, not if the remake was "lazy" which it wasn't. They stayed true to the game. They adapted it to fit perfectly with widescreen televisions. They touched up the lighting. There's all new character and player models. There's amazing surround sound now. They altered the control scheme to fit with the fixed camera angles - which was probably extremely difficult because they would have to go frame by frame through every angle to precisely program the movement, scrutinizing every step. Pay attention to the finest of details. The excellent core game is intact and the surrounding details were crafted with precision. This is what a remake should be. The game was almost perfect in 2002, and for me, it's now crossed that threshold with the updated re-release. The devil is in the details my friend.

I used to watch my brother play this when I was 4 or 5 years old so when I saw it on the dashboard I decided to download it and Wow!! It's such an awesome game. The only thing that bugged me was the lack of inventory space, it caused a lot of unnecessary back tracking. I'd have to give it a 9 or 9.5 out of 10 personally. And I'd love them to do a similar remake for Resi 2 and Nemesis too.

This remake is perfect
