SWTOR as eSport – Can It Happen?

Swtorstrategies: "So this is not the first time this question has been proposed but we want to open it up for a bit of discussion here. Could SWTOR make it as an eSport? With the growing popularity and demand on esports, it doesn’t seem far-fetched to think about other games getting into the scene. But is SWTOR a good choice? What aspects of SWTOR could be made into an eSport? We’d clearly be looking at PvP options, right?"

Firstly, this clearly was written by someone who loves the game enough to even bring this idea up, especially since the game has been out for a while now and it's gravity is quite weak in comparison to other PVP-driven games, especially on Twitch.

Second, Yes and No.

Yes - Sure, give this game a chance to get into the limelight and do some damage, spark up some interesting competitive communities inside a game that was once a beautiful, fun and new experience in a universe we all know and love.

No - Coming from a year or so of playing the game strictly for pvp, my opinions on the mechanics of combat felt rather "clunky" in comparison to other mmorpg's out there. When I say clunky, I mean very linear, doesn't feel like it flows, feels almost like the cooldowns never meshed well with one another (from a marauder and sniper perspective) and the animations seemed stiff, needed a wee bit of TLC/polish since release.

With that said, the game would need severe attention to detail from the developers stand point to make sure the game is in top notch form before heading out into money matches, especially in a league where sponsors have money invested in events. Less cheese the better. However, the game definitely has lost a lot of love from a competitive stand point over time since release, so they'd have a ton of catching up to do before convincing sponsors to fund SWTOR PVP events.

Great idea, however in this day and age, with so many other games out there having similar if not more potential for competitive play, it could be just another dream.

TL;DR - Yes, the game deserves it. No - Needs a lot of tuning and attention to balance details (aka TLC) before convincing sponsors to invest money in SWTOR for competitive, professional play.
