The Verge: Up close with the HoloLens, Microsoft's most intriguing product in years

Verge just finished a heavily scripted, carefully managed, and completely amazing demonstration of Microsoft's HoloLens technology. Four demos, actually, each designed to show off a different use case for a headset that projects holograms into real space. they played Minecraft on a coffee table, had somebody chart out how to fix a light switch right on top of the very thing they were fixing and finally walked on Mars.

Augmented Reality. It's nice, Sony already has it.

WTF are you talking about? Sony last VR demo was about talking to a teenage school girl in her room. Totally creepy.

This AR demo on the other hand sounds cool as hell. However unless they can demo this to the public, it's nothing more than RD vapor ware. VR is a lot easier to do and much closer to market than this.

IMHO, Microsoft totally blew it. They tipped their hand too early in the development cycle. If they waited for a while then wheeled out a working prototype for the press to try out on the show floor then they would shock the world.

Disagree all you like. It's wonderful that Microsoft is exploring AR, but Sony has been working with it and has actually implemented it into the PSVita.

yeah i have a bunch of AR on the vita and its nothing special. maybe it'll be a lil cooler if you wear glasses but honestly, it's a gimmick. "wow cool" for about 10-15 mins, 30mins Tops.

i saw and played with "things moving" about my table and house. but once you get passed that youre all like "ok thats enough of that". it'll entertain a child for a lil longer im sure, that's why Invisimals is directed toward kids.

i think it's a bad directing to fully take something. it's a mere side implementation in Sony's eyes, it's not gonna be all-the-rage i can assure you. but who knows, maybe ppl would want to use it for other things.

I know Sony does. But Microsoft's version seems to have a more general purpose since it can be used with various devices.

There's no need to put it down if the technology works well.

Im glad you pointed out that AR isn't anything new, im pretty sure almost everyone here was in doubt

Yea and Nintendo has been doing VR since the virtual boy... that means Nintendo has already done it right?

Seriously, how come you are in every MS article trying to convince yourself that Sony has done everything first?

its cool for like 10-15 mins. AR is another gimmick ive seen enough. bring on VR please. and a MS Handheld please!

Im not impressed at all. It is just promises and PR talk by now. Half the stuff on the video (the sink fixing, for instance) we already know is pre BS and wont work in any program.

Nometheless it was a great PR stunt. Everyone is taking the fake promises for granted now. Well played.
