VGChartz... that's all I am going to say.

Take the numbers as you will. Overtracked, undertracked, correct, incorrect..

trunkswd1404d ago

The PS4 numbers are spot on with Sony's official figures.

Neonridr1404d ago

still doesn't change the fact that people will take it as they will.

I could make a statement that said the earth was round and I would get disagrees ;)

vishmarx1404d ago

official nymbers vs imaginary numbers. awesome

trunkswd1404d ago

@Neonridr - Yeah that is a good point. People love to disagree.

morganfell1404d ago (Edited 1404d ago )

Yes they are spot on. Sony SOLD 18.5 million... to consumers.

Not a warehouse...

not some large pallet buyer...

not shipped to a retailer.

Sony sold through 18.5 million to consumers. I completely agree.

mikeslemonade1404d ago (Edited 1404d ago )

The numbers are close enough. I don't work for the industry so why would I care.

The total and overall sales are accurate enough. It's week to week sales that vary up to 100%. But obviously the totals sales cannot be wrong by more than 10% based on other more reputable sources.

So in the end day I can say PS4 pretty beating X1 2:1. And this is with the X1 trying to scramble to stay alive. And the WiiU continues to be irrelevant.

Pogmathoin1404d ago

Fools follow fools, hence why some total fools have so many bubbles. Back in the PS3 then, I guess Sony only reported what was sold to a pallet..... Good job morganfall, keep it up.....

GameSpawn1404d ago

VGChartz numbers are always "hearsay". Their margin of error for each week and month is always off by varying margins of error. Sometimes they can be ±2% error, other times they can be way off with over ±10%. They are consistently inconsistent.

VGCharts does usually "correct" their numbers once each companies fiscal reports are released to the public, but you always run into the ship/sold issue because of how each company reports their figures. Sony and Nintendo ALWAYS use "sold through" on their quarterly fiscal reports [it is explicitly noted as such]. Besides NPD, I don't know of ONE instance were Microsoft (an American company with American company practices) actually explicitly used "sold through" - they've always had a little "*" and "Shipped to retailers".

I'm NOT saying that Sony and Nintendo have NEVER quoted "shipped" numbers to the public, all three companies have. However, Sony and Nintendo being Japanese companies with Japanese business practices based on honor and integrity don't "fudge" the truth to their investors of how many systems they have actually sold through to customers and will clearly report sold through.

Like I just said, using shipped numbers is not "lying" because technically speaking Microsoft (and Sony and Nintendo when they use them) has SOLD those systems to retailers and has already gotten their share of the revenue for the system. It does introduce an imbalance of figures though as the two different sets of information do not represent the same picture and therefor cannot be directly compared.

Now that that is out of my system...

I like charts like this (even if there is a little error and it is VGChartz) because it shows a rough idea of how fast or how slow the systems are selling month to month based on the steepness of the lines in the graph. This gives you a rough picture of the popularity of each console throughout the year(s) and can also illustrate hardware shortages as massive dips followed by quick rebounds.

TheLyonKing1404d ago

@neonridr the reason why you would get disagrees with the earth being round is because it's an oblong spheroid.

Underworld1404d ago

Yes, after VGC changed them. They were overtracking it. They had PS4 at 18.2 as of December 20 when a few days later Sony announced 18.5 as of January 4. So VGC dropped it down to 17.3 as of December 20 then 18.1 as of December 27 and now 18.5 as of January 3. So yeah it's now the same as Sony's number but after they corrected it.

ShinMaster1404d ago

That is BECAUSE Sony released official figures. Had they not, VGchartz might have had them undertracked again.
But after the figures were released, their bias would become obvious.

MysticStrummer1404d ago

@LyonKing - I had the same thought, but if you look up the word "round" it doesn't have to be a perfect sphere or circle, just approximate.

XanderZane1404d ago

Yeah, because Sony provided them the figures. They are probably off on XBox One and Wii U number though. You can't always trust their hardware numbers and their software numbers are usually way off. Even the guy who post the numbers have said that sometimes they get it really wrong on numbers for games. They do a bit better with hardware, but you have to take their numbers with a grain of salt. Looking at the numbers they've posted, I don't they are that far off. Probably 200K-300K here or there I bet. Whatever. Sales are increasing, which is a good thing.

JMyers1404d ago

VG adjusted their numbers many times in the past after official numbers. They are known to be way off. If you guess 100 times, you may come close at least once.

Most notably this gen when TitanFall was released and MS $399 price cut. They had the X1 way ahead when this wasn't the case. They then adjusted the PS4 upwards.

dawa1403d ago

Sorry but Ioi changed the PS4 numbers after Sony's announcement.
They will adjust Xbox one numbers too if Microsoft release an update on their sold-through estimate.
Vgchartz is unreliable...

UKmilitia1403d ago

arnt MS numbers only shipped though?

why does one do shipped and other do sold to customers?

Gamer19821403d ago

Also this is sonys sold through figures vs MS sold to retailers figures as MS has never and will never release there sold through figures. VGchartz cannot even get these numbers either for either console. If it wasn't for Sony telling everybody the number we wouldn't know. Would be nice to know Xbox true figure but no way in hell MS gonna release that.

N2NOther1403d ago

Because Sony announced their official figures. How would they get that wrong?

DarkOcelet1404d ago

It weird that 18.5 million didnt change and suddenly Xone is 10.99

cellode1404d ago

Sony announced the PS4 sold 18.5 million units at the end of 2014, which is what VGChartz is saying.

trunkswd1404d ago

Cellode is correct. VGChartz PS4 sales are spot in. I think it is safe to say the Xbox One and Wii U sales are pretty close to being right.

trunkswd1404d ago

Also the PS4 continues to grow its gap over the Xbox One and Wii U in worldwide sales.

cellode1404d ago

Thanks for agreeing Trunks!

TFJWM1404d ago (Edited 1404d ago )

If Sony announced they sold through 18.5 then shouldn't VG have them much higher? I thought they did shipped like what Microsoft's numbers are.

Magicite1404d ago

PS4 is precise, both others r clearly overtracked.

NuggetsOfGod1404d ago

Man people don't give a syht about 60fps.

Ps4 is kicking ass lol

andrarfc1403d ago

And you are clearly dumb.

MyDietEqualsGames1404d ago

Lulzchartz. Wow, they're still at it, huh? I remember when I frequented the site, they had tracked PS3 sales at far less than what they were officially at while overtracking the Xbox 360. It was pathetic times and hilarious times at the same time. Yes, I do enjoy typing the word "time" =D

The PS4 continues to dominate. Also VGC sales estimates for the PS4 are spot on with Sony's figures.

The Xbox One has sold well since the price cut and even the Wii U had a good holiday. Good numbers all around.

Spid3r61404d ago

Spot on by just repeating what Sony says they sold???

Foehammer1404d ago

Great numbers for the first year

cellode1404d ago

Agreed. Great numbers all around.

trunkswd1404d ago

2015 is shaping up to be an even better year with a lot more releases.

cellode1404d ago

Yes it definitely is. So many great releases for all the consoles. It is a great time to be a gamer.

Relientk771404d ago

So basically

Wii U sales + Xbox sales = PS4 sales lol roughly

DougLord1404d ago (Edited 1404d ago )

You say that like it's MSFT's fault. Xone is outselling 360 by 50% at this point in its life. That is per MSFT as of last night. That is how you get to 11 million units. It took 360 till May 2008 and the release of GTA to cross 10 million. Yes Sony is selling really well and yes Nintendo is selling really bad.

Locknuts1404d ago

I know it's sad isn't it? The console with the highest quality games sells worst, the one with the second best exclusives and the same multiplats is next and the console with the same multiplats and the worst exclusives sells best!

Sometimes you just have to shake your head at this industry.

zeuanimals1404d ago

Cry some more about how your opinion isn't fact.

Fact is, the PS4 has more higher rated games than the XBO. What's happened to the Wii U is a travesty though, since it does have the best exclusives, but Nintendo brought it upon themselves by not taking 3rd parties into consideration, which they've been doing since the N64.

CaptainObvious8781404d ago

Actually the console with the best games and the best games to come (a proven history) is selling the best.

So all is well and good.

Locknuts1403d ago

@zeuanimals - Noone's opinion is fact. So I'm not sure what you're getting at.

@Captianobvious - Clearly a fanboy, so your opinion is invalid.

zeuanimals1403d ago (Edited 1403d ago )

You just said the XBO has the second best exclusives... Now you're saying nobody's opinion is fact. Nothing wrong with that since in your opinion, the XBO has the better exclusives. Problem is, you also want to shake your head at the industry (technically the consumers) for not buying more of the consoles you believe have the better exclusives, otherwise meaning you want people to share your opinions and you shake your head at other people people for not sharing your opinions.

So, that's why I'm saying, cry some more that more people don't see things the same way you do, or as I put colloquially, as a fact.
