IGN:"As we head towards Fourth of July weekend, World of Warcraft has its Midsummer Fire Festival running which will end with a massive fireworks display. Monsters in MapleStory will drop Independence Day hats of patriotic red, white and blue. Guild Wars runs its Dragon Festival and one presumes there will be fireworks at some point. Pirates of the Caribbean Online invites players to find a spot on the sandy shores of Port Royal, Tortuga, or Padres Del Fuego to enjoy the display when the sun goes down throughout the American Independence Day weekend.
Some games will simply hand out experience bonuses this long weekend, but their motives are still the same: to provide their players with a different in-game experience while celebrating a real-life holiday or event. This is by no means a recent phenomenon. From the days of text based Multi User Dungeons, or MUDs, GMs have tried to inject some fun, something different, something out of the ordinary for holidays. Any excuse for a party, and for a party, you need party goers."
