EA says Sony shipped 200,000 PS3s to North America

Speaking at the Reuters Media Summit in New York, Probst said that the number of PS3 consoles shipped to North America "was a bit of a surprise." Sony had set a target of 400,000 consoles for the launch, but only managed half this figure.

By the year end, Probst predicts that Sony will have shipped in the region of 500,000 to 800,000 PS3 units, but despite the lacklustre PS3 launch and EA shares falling almost 2%, sales of games and consoles are up on the whole.

Wow! What was their original plans? "We are still on target for a Spring (2006) launch."

Game devs are now set to lose a lot of money, deving for a user base of what...300,000 worldwide??

And whose "expectations" were met or slightly exceeded??? Surely not consumers.

For Black Friday my wife and I went to Best Buy for some of the early bird specials. I spoke to their video game sales rep and he stated that he had to restart the PS3 Kiosk four times that morning; it was about 9:30 AM. The store opened at 6 AM. We also went to Woodfield Mall in Schaumburg, IL. We visited the Sony store there and low and behold the PS3 was NOT TURNED ON. I inquired with the sales rep if she could have someone turn the Kiosk on and she stated that the unit was having 'Technical Difficulties.’ For all for those of you who don't know, Woodfield mall is located in a suburb of Chicago (Major Market) and it has 2,193,000 square feet of store space with 230 stores. I'm going to have a wait and see approach before I purchase the 60 GIG PS3 unit. I have an Xbox 360 and I really enjoy it. I also understand nothing is going to work 100% of the time. But for $900 with the configuration of accessories and games I want. I would like to see it do better out of the gate.

Full disclosure: My Xbox 360 died on me back in late September. Microsoft did repair the unit in two and a half weeks free of charge but it was frustrating as I had just purchased NBA2K7 ($65 with tax) and it died that day. Also, my updated Xbox 360 (1080P patch released in October) does not do 1080P with my Sony Bravia 1080P TV. I know Microsoft's looking into it and will have a patch update sometime this or next year. But that pretty my stopped me from buying that HD DVD add on from Microsoft for my entertainment room this holiday. Also of note, my Sony Bravia is my second TV of that model. The first one’s HDMI ports did not work. Thank God for Costco and their excellent return policy. The second one is great and I would recommend it HIGHLY. If you buy it from Costco (Model KDL46V251L1.)

support 1080p over component. Sony is big on HDCP. They only want 1080p over HDMI.

I heard it was nice up there:)

When I was little, my mom would take me to Woodfield all the time. We lived in Palatine at the time, and my grandparents lived in Deerfield...good memories...and yes, it is a HUGE shopping mecca for the Chicago area...

That's a great way to piss off the developers who initially supported you!!! Can things get any worse for the Sony Grill machine.

MicroGamer3702d ago

shares don't fall on good news, hence this is NOT good news for Sony no matter how they try to spin it.

Why is it that EA has this information and nobody else does?

Especially Sony, but they sure aren't going to talk about how badly they fuc#ed up, are they? I work at a Gamestop, and as time goes on since the launch, fewer and fewer people are calling and asking if/when we will have PS#'s for sale (Sony STILL hasn't sent us enough to cover the 16 pre-orders we took), but more and more people call asking when we will have Wii's in stock, and we sold out of 360's this last weekend for the first time in months (we had 18 regular and 12 core!) Gamestop/EB being the largest game retailer in the country, we have 4800 stores, each of which got (average) 10 PS3's, so with the one re-supply shipment Sony has sent to some of our stores, we got around 50,000 total PS3's to date. By this time (2 weeks) after the 360 launch, we had received 3 times that many systems from Microsoft.
