Holy geez, it's been frustrating trying to get these things. First it was Marth and Villager, now it's Little Mac. I'm not looking forward to the store exclusives nightmare we're sure to see with Wave 3.

user55757083396d ago

idk if its actually discontinued. from gamestop yes but they aren't the only retailer. toys r us walmart target etc...

artsaber3396d ago

Disgusting practice. Shameful on Nintendo's part. I've only seen two of these at one store - bought one and have never seen it since. I've confirmed that some stores never even get shipments of certain characters. For instance, only certain Gamestops in my area received Pitt - the closest one was 35 miles away - for one Amiibo, forget it. This is being done on purpose to create a false demand for these things. I can't understand it since Nintendo misses out on would-be sales.

xwilldemise3396d ago

Agreed then these things go for ridiculous prices on eBay since they become so limited! It's not like Nintendo makes money of this practice either when people buy from a second hand seller -_- lol

benji1013396d ago

I don't think that is the case at all. Nintendo did not anticipate that people would go nuts for the characters people went nuts for. They printed millions of mario and Luigi, no one cares! If anything the demand for the lesser known characters should send Nintendo a clear message. People don't care that much about Mario.

artsaber3395d ago (Edited 3395d ago )

@ Benji101 - I have bought one of every available character. I have witnessed like others that some characters never even ship to locations. Overprinting Mario characters by the thousands does not compensate for the complete absence of other Amiibos. Nintendo HAS to know that there is zero distribution of characters going to places - how can they not? It may not necessarily be that people have more natural demand for lesser known characters, what people realize is that they have been to 5 stores and only spotted the Villager once, and Lil Mac once, and only in ONE store that happened to get them. So people buy up that character due to extreme low supply, keep one and scalp the rest. To purposely create so few and then discontinue those characters is lunacy. Whoever is behind this should be fired because the loss of Pitt sales alone should be staggering. Anyone who owned a Nintendo knows who Pitt is, and he should not be rare in the 1st place. I have a Captain Falcon and no Pitt, how ridiculous is that? And I'm not complaining, but the character is simply not in the store for me to purchase. You should not have to go on an Amiibo hunt for franchise stapled characters.

Considerspace3396d ago

Why isn't Nintendo making more Amiibos? They're basically giving money to scalpers.

Summons753396d ago

Because they WANT to force rarity and drive the collectability aspect for all it's worth. I would have loved a Marth but my area never even got one in any store and a week later discontinued. If NIntendo wanted to do rare collectables and the fun in game bonuses they should have put all Aiimbos under one SKU (as it is they all have their own) and do random shipments to the stores making less of the ones they wanted to make rare. My little one wanted this toy from a show she loved and I could find the one she wanted for MONTHS because that is how they did it and it made it super rare. Hopefully Nintendo realizes that nobody is happy with the way they are handling things and fixes things. It's not really fair to anyone who got Smash for Xmas and wanted let's say Marth only to get it Xmas and find that the their main in the game isn't available to train like Nintendo is advertising.

Nodoze3396d ago

The scalpers are having a field day with these! Unfortunately nintendo are pissing off more people than they are pleasing.

Overall this was handled VERY poorly! Now things are going to even worse with the retailer exclusives (a VERY stupid move on Nintendo's part).

Summons753396d ago

I agree. Retail exclusives are a very not a bad idea but not a good one either and GameStop has a history of purposely withholding exclusive items and forcing people to buy more. Xenoblade Chronicles is a good example, tons of people preordered the game and maybe half of the actually got to buy the game and gamestop told the rest to buy something else, a friend and my reserves were just canceled and put on Call of Duty instead of them calling us and after all those unfulfilled preorders GameStop "Magically" find tons of used copies, weirdly none of them had any damage to the case, disc, and the club Nintendo codes went untouched..... Whenever gamestop has an exclusive FREE Pokemon distributing event they always hold the codes hostage and make you preorder or buy (X) amount. I can only imagine what they will do with their Amiibo figures that are exclusive.

CorndogBurglar3396d ago

I want Mega Man, Pitt, Link, Samus, and Little Mac.

I don't even have a WiiU, I just want them to place on my nerd shelf.

GameStop Boss Says Disc Drives Should Be Required On Game Consoles

"It would be great if people had to buy more of the thing," says guy who makes money selling the thing.

XiNatsuDragnel230d ago

Absolutely consoles needs disc drives.

wesnytsfs230d ago

Nah should be optional. Not a PS fan but I like their strategy of selling an optional external optical drive. Its all about Options and this will let everyone get their way. Cheaper for digital only and then you can chose to pay more for the optical drive if that is important to you.

Profchaos230d ago

That's not official yet it's only a rumour

Eonjay230d ago

@Profchaos

But what he describes already exists in the 2 base models. If it is a rumor you can blame Microsoft for really backing it in court but if we are honest we all know it's true.

Profchaos230d ago

@Eonjay I'm not denying the appeal of it I can see it being a useful mechanism for allowing gamers to upgrade as needed however until there's concrete proof and not speculation and remember ms still bases that court submitted document off of the same leaks we see on Reddit, 4chan etc I just can't believe it.

The system would be further opened to exploitation and they would need to release an overpriced drive for consumers to buy for it and sure as they do we will hear complaints over the cost of it

ChasterMies229d ago

Absolutely consoles don’t need disc drives. My house has 2 PS5 digital editions, one since launch. Zero issues with the lack of disc drives. In fact, the digital purchasing lets us all share each other’s games, usually mine, and play the same game at the same time on-line.

shadowT230d ago

Optional drives would be best strategy.

-Foxtrot230d ago

If they did then collectors wouldn’t be getting f***** over with discless collectors editions

jeromeface229d ago

yea they would, discs cost extra... even when you're already paying a premium

-Foxtrot229d ago (Edited 229d ago )

Lmao

We are paying roughly the same now without the discs. There’s literally collectors editions which are roughly in the same price range that have a disc.

I’d rather pay a little more for something physical anyway

RupeeHoarder230d ago

No shock, GameStop is alive because of trading. If they don't have used games on their shelves they are absolutely donezo.

darthv72230d ago

Well of course the GS boss thinks this... that's their bread and butter business. That and funco pops and clothing, though those two were added as a means to supplement the decline in people buying used games or even new games. GS just sucks overall when it comes to gaming. I buy my physical stuff on Amazon or Best Buy.

As for "requiring" disc drives... nah. Not anymore, but i like having them as an option. They had a means back when games actually ran off the discs and were more/less complete. Now they are incomplete and the disc is really an installer with a license to play. If you want to change games you have to take out the disc and put in another. Its more convenient to just use digital. I have been into digital for years now and when the PSPortal comes along i wont even have to go into my game room. I will just play my PS5 from my couch downstairs. I have a bunch of digital installed games to my 5... I'm all set.
