Wired: Metal Gear Solid 4: The Spoiler-Filled Review

Reviewed by Chris Kohler, he writes:

"Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots is a giant leap forward for technical achievement and cinematic presentation in videogames. Gameplay, not so much.

Don't get me wrong: The gameplay is as riveting as ever while you're sneaking superagent Solid Snake behind enemy lines for one last stealth mission. But it's clear that the action has taken a back seat to the in-game movie scenes. It's not hyperbole, not even a little, to call these the best non-interactive moments ever seen in a videogame. But they take up well over half the game, and toward the final hours, the movie-to-game ratio approaches something more like 80/20.

Since we're running late with this review -- the game shipped June 12, but I only finished playing it this week -- I've decided to explicitly discuss a lot of things that might be considered spoilers. If you want to remain untainted by knowledge, read no further."

Apparently, over half the game is cutscenes. This is news to me as it took me 21 1/2 hours on my first playthrough, and since then when I play it I skip the cutscenes (not all, some are absolutely awesome) and most of my time is spent playing. There's so much to do and unlock, so much time to be spent playing this game. I've racked up about 10 hours on metal gear online too. So, OK, the game gets more action-oriented towards the end, but all of it is pure class.

And @2, OMG it has 94 on metacritic not 96 OMGOMG, doesn't change a thing - for some reason there are a lot of sony haters out there who are willing to give this an 8 out of 10, and all they can blame is the length of the cutscenes. I'm willing to bet that if there was something else with the game, let's say it had much shorter cutscenes but in them there was little story content, they were boring, these same sites would feel fit to give it an 8 as well. I've not seen many user reviews that have rated this an 8, unless they've started it with "I finally bowed to the pressure and got a PS3, I've had an xbox all this time, this game is not as good as they say..."

This game has a tremendous amount of gameplay, it feels like a sandbox game at times, especially when you can restart the first act on your second playthrough will all your weapons. The complaint about "bububu you don't have to use stealth!!1" is one of the game's strenghs - you can blast your way through if you wish, but you won't get no kills bonus or no alerts bonus by doing so. Only during the ending did I feel that I was really left out of the action, but I forgave that because it's the end and I expect a lengthy cutscene, no one complained about final fantasy endings. "Bububu it's not an rpg", true but it has characters you care about in just the same way, and there's no reason if you can sit through them in FF you can't in MGS. BTW, during cutscenes, the movie-to-game ratio approaches 100/0 !!!!11
