Is Troy Baker a Bad Omen for Uncharted 4?

Harry Bowers writes: "I have to admit, when I first got wind of [Troy Baker's appearance] I was just about as excited as everyone else. But then I thought about it a little more. If you’ve dabbled in any popular video game this year, chances are you’ve played audience to Baker’s talents. The man is a machine. He treats VO gigs like Pokémon. The man has skill, that’s undeniable: his performances ooze with nuance and believability. But does this mean that he – along with a handful of other popular actors – needs to inhabit every new role?"

Yeah I can see what he means I would preferred someone new for this role.

Feels like they are shoving him into it because they've worked with him before and the whole Nolan/Troy being together as brothers is being talked about a lot.

ShugaCane1456d ago

People are overthinking this too much. Troy Baker is a fantastic voice actor. Plus, there is a good chemestry between him and Nolan North. I don't see any problem here.

randomass1711456d ago (Edited 1456d ago )

Well said. I don't see a problem either. I saw Troy as Booker in Bioshock, Joel in Last of Us and the ranger in Shadow of Mordor. I didn't even realize they were voiced by the same guy. He has incredible range and I'm sure he'll fit right into Uncharted.

-Foxtrot1456d ago (Edited 1456d ago )

No one is saying he's not a good voice actor, even the article mentions this. Why is it when you mention something about Troy Baker in this game like "Oh I wish Todd Stashwick stuck around" or "I would of preferred someone else" it's straight to the "He's a fantastic voice actor though"...no one is saying he's not.

He just wasn't really needed as a main guy in this game when you already have a top voice actor like Nolan as the main guy. Maybe a cameo or a smaller role but not his brother.

Besides he sounds a little like Booker in the game, I knew it was Troy straight away.

I just wish they would of kept the Nolan/Troy duo for a future video game.

ab5olut10n1456d ago (Edited 1456d ago )

agreed. i'm not really feeling him in interviews, and that's on me, but even i have to admit he's got crazy talent. his range is something else.

morganfell1456d ago (Edited 1456d ago )

Including Troy Baker is a great move because he is a brilliant voice actor. From Talion to Pahan Min to Joel. Baker doesn't have just one sound.

Remember when some people rolled their eyes when they found out Nolan North was going to be in The Last of Us?

POSSIBLE SPOILERS FOR THE LAST OF US:

https://www.youtube.com/wat...

Remember how a few joked Nathan Drake would be an infected? Look what happened when you actually heard him. Had you not been told you would not have guessed that was North in the role of David. Baker has that same pedigree...except better.

Articles such as this are pure tripe.

Nolan and Troy have worked together many times. It's not the first nor will it be the last, they are both masters of their craft, Troy has blown up much the way Nolan has and that's ok. They are fantastic voices actors who have elevated our favorite medium to astronomical heights. I don't see them work I g on Uncharted 4 a biggie when they've played a wide range of different characters together before. We all know UC4 is light hearted and both actors are prime for this so let's stop with the freaking out. It's nothing new.

jb2271456d ago

Totally agreed…also if you listen to his lines in the trailer, their voices are very similar which really drives that brothers aspect home. Seems like Troy is actively trying to Nolan-ize his voice & its working well. The brothers aspect hits home for me in a lot of ways & that little wrinkle has me more excited than anything…I feel like this installment of Uncharted could end up the best yet, and that's saying a lot after losing Hennig…I was really worried that this game could end up sub-par story wise but my fears are all alleviated after the PSX gameplay.

@random mass

Don't forget Joker in Batman Arkham Origins.

...which I thought was a good game, despite the panning by users.

Why hire someone else when one of the best voice actors in the business wants the job?

Now, normally I may agree with some of this article. ND did lose alot when they lost Henning etc. But we are forgetting one thing.

Those who are taking over made a little game last year called The Last of Us. And while I wish Henning the best, and we will never really know exactly what happened, I believe it's in great hands.

From what we have seen, there really isn't any reason to panic.. at all. The only reason would be expectation coming off last genes successes and the limited hardware upgrade.

And Troy Baker. I just think it's an opportunity to put two of the best voice actors together for one hell of a finale. Who better?

Seriously, I think expectations are more dangerous for this game than anything that has taken place.

inveni01455d ago

Limited hardware upgrade? Not in ND's hands it isn't. =)

KnownAsEpic1456d ago

Correct me if I'm wrong but there was a voice avtor who left NaughtyDog with amy hening and I think they didn't have time for auditions so they got troy baker who they knew he would do a decent job

Yokan1455d ago

Yeah I remember this too I completely forgot about this.

KyRo1456d ago (Edited 1456d ago )

Not really. Nolan has voiced a mighty list of characters in games over the years and does a great job at playing a unique roll. Apart from PoP and Spec Ops where he just sounded like Drake a little to much times, he's a versatile actor. There's no reason why Troy can't be the same and has so far shown us that he can.

I_am_Batman1456d ago (Edited 1456d ago )

Wow. People are complaining about everything nowadays.

They needed a voice actor and they got one of the best. Sounds like good news to me.

Obviously he's not going to sound completely different from other roles he did in the past. Complaining about this makes just as much sense as complaining about Elrond (Lord of the Rings) looking like Agent Smith (Matrix).

OB1Biker1456d ago

I think T Baker is a good idea for this role as the brother character will be very strong indeed as Drake vs his brother should be and better than someone unknown.
TB wasn't really needed in many other games though

rainslacker1456d ago

Who really cares so long as he gets the job done. They could have picked someone else, but since Baker is more than capable of handling the role, why not go with him?

WeAreLegion1456d ago

He's a great actor. Chill.

Also, he's probably going to die. A Thief's End? Come on...

-Foxtrot1456d ago

Hopefully since I don't want Sully or Drake to die

Trying to make out it's the last game when it's going to trick us.

WeAreLegion1456d ago (Edited 1456d ago )

Exactly. Whether they want to kill Drake or not, this is one of Sony's largest franchises. There's just no way Sony would let them. I know Sony doesn't traditionally rely on rehashing characters, but this is one franchise you don't just stop making.

How the heck do these idiotic, crappy, senseless, time wasting articles get published??? I mean really?? WTH?? With all the good and crappy things going on in gaming right now THIS is what someone chose to write about?? Since when has any voice acting regardless of how good or terrible it was EVER had any impact on the success of any game whatsoever??? This article literally broke my brain.

WeAreLegion1456d ago

Because people keep reading them. I didn't even click. I'm not giving hits to clickbait.

FLCL4711Fox1456d ago

And by commenting you just helped this piece gain more exposure... Yes, your brain is broken.

johndoe112111456d ago

@flc4711

Did you even read that comment before you posted it? It makes no sense at all. Please don't post too close to my comments, idiocy is contagious. You may infect the entire thread.

rainslacker1456d ago

In the US, gamers know maybe 2-3 voice actors by name, as opposed to the, "Oh yeah, that guy also did that".

Very few people care. This is the first time I've ever seen someone complain about a talented voice actor getting a gig. Seriously, this guy is so good, if you didn't know it was him, you wouldn't realize he was doing the voice...Kinda like Nolan North's part in TLOU.
