The top 5 storylines every gamer should experience

Lately, GamersFTW have been thinking about stories. GamersFTW likes good graphics and fancy new features as much as the next guy, but the absolute power of a compelling story just can’t be overstated. Unfortunately, the current landscape of video games is seeing a general decline in great stories.

For me it's Persona 3 FES and Persona 4 Golden. Also The Last of Us, MGS4, The Walking Dead season 1, Breath of Fire 3, SaGa Frontier 2, Final Fantasy 8 (the story has to be replayed to understand it's ending), Star Fox 64 (true ending), Final Fantasy Tactics, Enslaved, Red Dead Redemption, Ni No Kuni etc.

Plus the games in the article too.

Games with great stories can surpase even the best movies...

Big_Game_Hunters1088d ago

I believe one day a game's story can be as good as the best movies, but currently no.

DragonKnight1088d ago

Pfff, Final Fantasy Tactics and The Last of Us are already leagues better than most movies.

Big_Game_Hunters1088d ago

@DragonKnight
Sure, i can name plenty of games that have better stories than most movies, but not better than the best movies.
we aren't comparing bad movies with good video game stories here.

HentaiMasterRace1088d ago

A lot of games are better than movies.

Qrphe1088d ago

There is plenty of visual novel that are a lot more involved than films.

DragonKnight1088d ago

@Big_Game_Hunters: I repeat my comment.

guitarded771088d ago

I disagree... I find a good game better than a great movie because I am not simply observing the story... I am there... shaping the story. Games have come a long way in the past decades, and will only get better with devs concentrating on storytelling.

Big_Game_Hunters1088d ago

@guitarted
No one is saying movies are better than games, but it is true that Games have not reached the story quality of the best movies.

@DK
i could spend a few minutes typing a response proving why you are wrong, but it seems like you wouldn't care anyway so instead heres some advice. Maybe put down the summer blockbusters and watch some better movies?

DeusEx-Machina1087d ago (Edited 1087d ago )

It's not so simple.

Books, movies, TV-shows, games... are all different formats.

They all have their individual strengths in how to tell a story. Depending on the story itself, one format might be a better fit than an other.

Consequently, there are/will be stories that are best told via a video game rather than an other format. Spec Ops: The Line would be an example.

I don't agree with them all but it is a good list.

Would add Final Fantasy 7, MGS1, Halo Reach and a few others to the list though. I also would take out Mass Effect, it is just a bunch of Sci-fi cliches that can be found done better in other series.

Barnaby-Jones1088d ago

I recently experienced the story of Spec Ops the line. Imo a game many gamers should see with its grittiness and real portrayal of how horrible war can be.

Xristo1088d ago

This. Not the best TPS but the story makes up for any flaw.

Neixus1088d ago

agreed, story is really good, gameplay is super boring.

Try to look at it as a telltale game, play it for the story, not the gameplay.

stuntman_mike1087d ago

agree one of the best stories ive played in a long time. it sticks with you after playing it.

Kingdomcome2471088d ago

Good list, but Bioshock 1 is my favorite.

Neonridr1088d ago

agree 1000%. Such a well written game. Some slag it off because it was a FPS with some added elements, but the reveal at the end was awesome.

Kingdomcome2471087d ago

I loved it. It's my favorite game of all time. Bioshock Infinite is top ten for me as well.

GetGamer_Danny1088d ago

Kingdomcome247,

Thanks for reading! Bioshock was close and it would definitely be on the top 10.

Happy Holidays!
