Sony Looking at Force-Feedback, Eye-Tracking Control for Project Morpheus

VRFocus - As 2014 draws to a close consumer virtual reality (VR) feels closer than ever thanks to the launch of Samsung’s Gear VR smartphone-based head-mounted display (HMD) and teases of a release for the Oculus Rift. Despite this, the industry doesn’t feel much closer to solving the issue of input for VR experiences, creating a definitive standard for control that won’t break immersion. Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) has its PlayStation Move motion controllers for its Project Morpheus, although the company has recently revealed that it is looking into other areas as well.

wooow. imagine eye tracking looking in the direction you want to see and the screen moving there... genius! would totally limit how much you would have to move your head around to see things; total realistic immersion!

I think they patented this idea too

PoSTedUP3422d ago (Edited 3422d ago )

did they? idk. i Do know that they had a deal or partnership with NASA a year or so back specifically just for this technology. hope we get to see it this gen!

There was a report about eye tracking where the reporter mentioned that Sony let him play infamous without a controller, and that it actually worked quite seemlessly, and he was "amazed". Apparentely he could shoot at enemies by looking at them with the intention to shoot. Which is beyond me.

PoSTedUP3422d ago

oh yeaah, i remember that. sounds like sony is not playing around this gen. they mean business.

Yaay4me3422d ago

Yup VR is going to be amazing i think.

I'm very much looking forward to Morpheus and Rift, but every time I hear something new about Morpheus, it involves "thinking about" or "hoping to implement", which indicates it's still a long way from production. It's almost 2015...when will we see this thing in homes? Last I heard they were contemplating oled or led for the display. Has there been any update on that decision yet? As far as I know the oled is still a rumor and not confirmed? I know I'm hoping for oled.

This is the evolution I expected from this Gen, and the main reason I bought into it.

I like the eye tracking and how you could be talking to someone and they look you in the eye

I'm really interested in the whole Morpheus VR thing but it still sounds someway off from being a product that is ready to be released. Equally important, the price of all this new technology will have to prove cost-effective for mass production/uptake by PS4 owners.
I hope they can pull it off.

The new 3DS tracks your eyes in order to adjust the 3D so that the 3D effect does not fall apart so easily when you rotate the machine to the left or right. Apparently it works really well.

That would be head tracking. Eye tracking would be pretty pointless on a 3ds.

I can finally watch pron, I mean watch pronouns be pronounced in PC VR games that were previously not available on Playstation.

crazyCoconuts33d ago

be careful not to sprain your... tongue pronouncing those pronouns

Profchaos33d ago

I'm excited for that to plus I can try fallout 4 VR always wanted to play that

crazyCoconuts33d ago

I was lucky and held off on 4 until I played it in VR. It really is pretty awesome - you'll love it.

DaReapa33d ago

The icing on the cake would be if Sony / Valve allow for a Steam Link app much like it is for the Quest 3. Likely wishful thinking, though.
