Everyone is talking about the next Street Fighter's exclusivity for the PS4 but really, is this news worth freaking out about? Is it that significant?
A huge deal for fans of the franchise, it means playstation is now the place for them to play. Similar with all 3rd party exclusives really. Tomb raider is the same, may not be a big deal for those who aren't fans of the game. For those who are though xbox is the place for them to play. I will say street fighter fans are also very likely to buy a ps4 JUST because of street fighter alone. (Not thay there aren't other games) For me personally the answer to this question would be that it didn't appeal to me at all. I am not the target of the game though, fighting fans are.
It equals about stuff all to nearly nothing to about 99% of gamers. Street fighter had it's day and age well back before the N64, it's old and stale and only played by a tiny minority of dedicated stick fighter fans. It really is a stupid move on Capcoms behalf as they probably just cut their totally profits into a 3rd sized piece of what it would have been. Wii U and Xbone sales would have helped this game not flop. @ Enemy below, Mortal Kombat says hi
Mortal Kombat is popular yes, but Street Fighter is still the most popular fighting franchise out there. SFIV sold really well last gen, so your comment makes no sense.
"they probably just cut their totally profits into a 3rd sized piece of what it would have been. Wii U and Xbone sales would have helped this game not flop." ' People made that exact same argument with Tomb Raider why isn't it valid here? Capcom could use Sony as a crutch just to get the game out initially then if they make enough port it to other consoles. Just like MS and Square are doing.
just because you or people around you not interested in it doesn't mean it's old and stale. The franchise still means a lot to quite a number of people, granted, they're not as much as CoD or GTA fans but that still don't entitle you to say 99% of gamers don't care about it. Sigh, people need to stop acting like they're walking encyclopedia or something... Oh, I forgot this is the internet.
The first iteration of sf4 sold 3 million combined and the 5 total iterations over 5 years sold 8 million, I don't think its that great if 5 versions sell 8 million
No games on PS4 or Xbox have sold 8 million as far as I know. 8 million is quite a lot of people. Actually 8 million is more people than Xbox ones sold. So the number must be quite substantial.
You have no IDEA how big the audience behind SF is then.
Before N64? LOL you clearly are not part of the fighting game community.
You do realise porting releasing games on other platforms also cost time and money right? No, they did not cut their profits but they did cut their revenue. It is clear that SF5 will sell a lot more on the PS4 just because of the install base alone. TR is big in Europe, the install base is on the PS4 between NA and Europe is the same. Don't you think Square Enix will gain much more revenue/profit if they actually develop for the PS4 as well?
They wouldn't have done it if their profits were cut by a 1/3. This isn't an -out of the kindness of our hearts- business. It may be a sign of investment to be honest. For most it won't matter, for some it will matter a great deal. One thing is for certain, somehow, somewhere this benefits Capcom also. Why would Insomniac make a game just for MS? They could have finally made a multiplat title. Instead they made a game for the console with the smaller install base. I actually feel bad for them.
@Wizard_King "Street fighter had it's day and age well back before the N64, it's old and stale and only played by a tiny minority of dedicated stick fighter fans" Street Fighter 4 sold 3.3 million copies while available for PS3/Xbox360. SF4 also received Metacritic scores of 94 for PS3 version, 93 for Xbox 360, 91 for the PC version. http://en.wikipedia.org/wik... The entire Street Fighter franchise has sold over 35 million copies. It's one of the top 10 best selling video game franchises in the world. Yes that means SF is more profitable than Mortal Kombat. A Street Fighter game that is built for the PS4 will sell millions. Players all over the world have only seen a glimpse of the kinds of games the PS4 can run with games like Infamous SS, DriveClub, TLOU: Remastered, and Resogun. A Street Fighter game running on the PS4 won't have to suffer from visual and performance downgrades for the sake of "console parity." SF5 will most likely be running at 1080p and 60fps, especially now since the competition won't be holding the PS4 back. I'm sure Mortal Kombat has plenty of fans, but Street Fighter is a global phenomenon that has already made it's mark on history and it's about to do so again when Street Fighter 5 is released on the PlayStation 4.
The biggest fighting franchise going exclusive IS a big deal.
@AngelicIceDiamond "People made that exact same argument with Tomb Raider why isn't it valid here?" Uh... because: 1) Considering neither the Wii nor the Wii U ever even received SFIV it's unlikely that it would receive the more demanding SFV, which isn't even releasing on PS3. 2) Because there are way more PS TR fans, alone, than Xbox TR fans, before even factoring in PC fans, and Square decided to cut off the overwhelming majority of TR fans, from the two platforms with the longest history of hosting the franchise, after failing to turn a profit with the first release of the reboot. Let the search for false equivalency continue.
"Actually 8 million is more people than Xbox ones sold. So the number must be quite substantial." And if even 1/16 of them buy a PS4 to get their SF fix, that's a problem for a system desperately trying to play catch-up.
Its a big deal all right. The biggest, hugest deal I've ever seen... EVER!! Seriously though, I'm curious to see how this turns out. It's going to be nice to see a game made specifically for the PS4 without other consoles in mind. I'm not a big SF fan but I'll surely check it out :)
Not much of a big deal to be honest, it's just people complaining. They act like capcom owes them to release SFV on every platform when in reality capcom owes them nothing. It's called false-entitlement.....
It is a big deal for Sony. Console gamers that used to play on Xbox will all have to go Sony to get the next Street Fighter entry. Considering how big the franchise is, that holds a lot of weight.
If you care about street fighter that much nothing is going to stop you from getting a PS4 to play it (if you don't already have one), but complaining over some false sense of entitlement as if Capcom isn't allowed to do what they will with their own property (in this case making it a console exclusive) is not only stupid, but ridiculous.
Capcom made the hige mistake of wearing people out by re-releasing SFIV so many times. They did the same with SFII so when Third Strike came it wasn't that big of a deal. The reason SFIV was such a big hit was because they waited long enough and didn't make a billion versions of Third Strike.
@Sinatra "If you care about street fighter that much nothing is going to stop you from getting a PS4 to play it" People who were defending TombRaider saying the same thing. But "nobody wants to by a console just for one game" is what the counter argument was. Is that still the case here? Or no?
@Concertoine That's kind of what Capcom does. You do realize they didn't just jump from SFII to Thrid Strike, right? Your argument seems to be relying on that falsehood. Third Strike suffered from gutting most of the roster, though the quality of the game was still up to standards. @AngelicIceDiamond No. SF is THE game to have in the fighting genre. There are fighters I personally like better (probably because I'm not as good at SF), but there's no denying SF has the crown. TR has been stumbling for years and finally got something right on the latest reboot by going more in the Uncharted direction. TR fans will be upset about exclusivity, but it's not a system seller. Uncharted is the king in its genre. I'm getting a kick out of this stealth trolling via passive aggressive implications of PS fans being hypocrites. Keep it up.
Its not a big deal because its Sony. But it was a HUGE deal however when MS did it. People were saying "MS needs to invest in there own stuff and stop money hatting third party" You know, ok, that's fine because despite the fact MS does have there own stuff goin on they need extra help in the exclusives department. Which is why its exclusive. But what's everyone's excuse for Sony then if that's the case? Do they not have enough "exclusives" no that can't be the case. @Sinatra thank you for supporting and providing proof of my false assumption of your comment. Agreed and here's a bubble.
http://n4g.com/news/1567639... I was one of the few people telling people to get over the fact of Tomb Raider was a Xbox exclusive, so trying to say that I'm giving special treatment to Sony is untrue. EDIT: "People who were defending TombRaider saying the same thing. But "nobody wants to by a console just for one game" is what the counter argument was. Is that still the case here? Or no? Dude you're asking the wrong question to the wrong person, if you want an answer to that then actually ask someone who stood by that statement. Me personally if there is a game that I want and it's on a console that I don't own then I will buy it, one game or not.
@AngelicIceDiamond If you hadn't come with an agenda, you wouldn't have embarrassed yourself, there. Stop trying to find any little opportunity to make blanket statements implying PS fans are hypocrites and you won't have to wipe egg off your face. "But what's everyone's excuse for Sony then if that's the case? Do they not have enough 'exclusives' no that can't be the case." Let's look at the big retail exclusives released so far. Xbox: 3rd party: Ryse, Dead Rising, Titanfall, Sunset Overdrive. 1st party: Froza, The Fighter Within (I'll allow it), Forza H, Halo MCC. PS4: 3rd party: ??? 1st party: Kill Zone, Knack, Infamous, MLB The Show, TLOU, Drive Club, LBP. Yeah. But why does everyone keep picking on MS, right? I mean, Sony did it, too™.
It's only the biggest fighting franchise in the world.
It's a pretty damn big deal, especially if you Street Fighter, and fighting games. It's a big exclusive to have. *edit: if you like Street Fighter
pretty big, i'd say atleast 1.5million. numbers may not look gigantic but its a big brand attached to their console. sf fans who hasnt bought new console het and not willing to play on pc may decide to buy ps4 because of this.
Not as big a deal as Tomb Raider was. They got death threats because "TR's true and original home is Playstation, and that was ripped away by greedy moneyhatting MS!". SF leaves Xbox? Eh, no big loss. lel
The strawman is defeated! Good job with that attack! You must feel good about yourself, winning an argument based on nothing. People were upset because Tomb Raider has more than a decade long history with Playstation and PC, because these two platforms make up the majority of the franchise's fans, and because those fans are shut out of the next game. Does Street Fighter have a longer history with Xbox? Are most of its fans there? Is that majority getting shut out? Was Tomb Raider in danger of not getting made, despite us already knowing about the game being in development prior to the exclusivity announcement? Is Tomb Raider number one in the genre? If none of these things happen in both cases, I don't see why you'd think they were similar, and should therefore have similar responses.
They are both getting paid to not make a game for another system, regardless of specifics that still leaves people out. Both of these deals have similar effect, yet get completely different responses. It likely comes down to the sony fanbase crying louder when losing something a lot of them like. Not surprising being Sony is the company who has done deals like that the most of any other over the last 20 years. They're more used to getting than losing since they are deathly loyal. The difference in responses shows only hypocricy from the sony loyal. Xbox gets, they cry and xbox laughs. Ps gets, they laugh and xbox shrugs. Barely anyone is even talking about this anymore. It died fast, not even a top news story. TR was weeks and weeks of massive salty tears and journalist sensationalism. You can bury your head in the sand and try to make excuses, but that's how it is. A widespread Sony bias.
I wasn't upset when SF2 turbo went to SNES when I had a Genesis. I just went to my cousins or friends house and played there. We didn't worry about exclusives and stuff. We all knew Gen had certain games like Sonic, Ristar, Dynamite Heady, Streets of Rage while SNES was home to games like Donkey Kong, Megaman X, Battletoads, and Mario. It wasn't a big deal. Also if you liked a particular game you just got the console it was on. None of this fanboy crap that goes on now. I mean sure we had debates on which console was better but at the end of the day we just played games.
Not nearly as big as some would claim. I'm personally not convinced it's even relevant but I'm likely wrong in that assumption .
Silly question! It's as big a deal as the Tomb Raider exclusive deal was before it was found out to be a timed exclusive! The only difference now , it's on a different platform. @ A LIVING LEGEND Your wrong in your assumption about it not being relevant. Try telling that to the E-Sport professional players! Not to mention the countless who've played it on Xbox consoles.
if you are asking if its a huge deal...then it probably is a huge deal lol. if it wasnt nobody would speak of it.
I'm seeing people make a bigger deal out of it then tnr TombRaider acquisition. This is evident with the huge amount of people claiming that Street Fighter V doesnt matter anymore. Funny thing is that most of them are one bubble trolls who always bash Sony. Gives you a really clue what system they have preference for.
I wont buy it, but I'm sure it will move consoles and sell well at retail for those who are fans.
PS4 don't really need SFV exclusive. It would have still out sell XB1 because fighters are played the most on PS. Capcom didn't want to publish it so they have Sony do it. If Sony was to buy Capcom, then you can say it's a huge deal.
Why are people trying to compare this sf5 issue with tomb raider? I mean, we all know that tomb raider is a 'timed' exclusive. Wouldn't it be better to compare it to bayonetta 2? Which was multi platform before Nintendo paid for the sequel to be console exclusive.
This is about how much you love the game. For example, I like Tomb Raider but I will not be buying an x1 just for it. Tomb Raider is just out of my list unless it comes to PS4. The difference is that Street Fighter will be released in the console with the biggest market and fanbase plus on PC and plus with cross play which is awesome. Meanwhile Tomb Raider will be released on the less popular console with a smaller market and fanbase than the PS4 which will make the game difficult to stand out on his own. Hopefully Square Enix secured the money they needed for all the sales they will lost for not releasing on PS4.
