Opinion: Why the Wii U is the Console to Beat (Somehow)

It’s been a hard few years as a Nintendo fan. A weak launch line-up, lack of third party support and it’s initial identity crisis, lead to poor sales and a shed load of criticism from the critics and public alike.
That’s starting to change this year though, with several games being critically praised, including; Super Smash Bros for Wii U, Mario Kart 8 and Bayonetta 2. These titles have slowly started to build momentum in the system and with Amiibo and titles like; The Legend of Zelda, Splatoon and Star Fox on the horizon, the future is finally starting to look bright for Nintendo’s slow burning console.

Happy to see the Wii U get positivity now. 2014 was awesome and so will 2015.

Why is it xbox is dead just becuz itz behind sony and not ninty?
I never get that.

But anyway nintendo seem to have top notch exclusives!

They are the only company who puts proformance over visuals.
1080p 60fps.

Sony and Ms are pushing for graphics so hard it's biting them in the ass.

Why not xbox lowered to $300 and guarantee all next gen games 720 60fps?
And let everyone eles pay $400 for 1080p 30fps?

Makes just want a wiiu next to my future pc.

Anyway sorry for the rant.

Nintendo is starting to do better and better!

That's just fan boy talk. Nintendo are not doing as well as they were last gen with the wiiu in terms of sales but there is no lack of quality Exclusives on the console any more. The biggest issue Nintendo now have is getting 3rd party games on their consoles and unfortunately I think any console that dose not have COD, BF and FIFA on them will always sell less than the ones that do because of how gaming has become.

For me I've not really been excited for any 3rd party game this year and I've got exclusives on my xbox one and wiiu. At this moment in time the ps4 is the one missing the games I really want but ill look to pick one up next year when the IP's I want are on it.

I hope all 3 have a great gen no matter what the fan boys say as for me Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo are great for the console business and don't want to see any of them pull out.

Console to GET? Sure.

Console to BEAT? Not so much..

In terms of first party content? Yes. Sony is playing the safe game with the PS4 (unlike the PS3) and relying mostly on 1080p and cross-gen, cross platform titles to define their console. Even MS is stepping up their game with their exclusive content.

And that shows your disregard of gaming history. Microsoft also came in strong in "exclusive" content for the Xbox 360 on its first couple years, but in the last 2 years they practically abandoned it to third party developers.

Meanwhile, Sony had an extremely slow start with the PS3, and they didn't really have much for it (exclusive content, I mean) on its first two years of life, so it became a running gag that the PS3 had no games. Look how it ended.

So, you're making judgments way too soon. The fact is, both the original Xbox and Xbox 360 were mostly third party game machines when all was said and done. The PS1, the PS2 and the PS3, on the other hand, ALL ended up having awesome game libraries from both third party developers AND exclusive games.

So... this is why I went with a PS4. I did not buy it for what it has right now, I bought it for the long run. I'm not saying Sony will definitely step up to the plate this time again for sure, but I'm saying they've been, historically speaking, much more consistent with their games than Microsoft, so I trust Sony more.

Nintendo, on the other hand, has ALWAYS had superb exclusive games for their consoles, with no exceptions, on their 30 years of being in the game industry. So, that's why I bought a Wii U since launch. Now it's paying off big time. :)

Those first two years were rough. The investment has definitely paid off though. Them sweet sweet exclusives.

wonderfulmonkeyman1073d ago

Really looking forward to all the good known games and unknown surprises that are in store on the system for 2015 and beyond.
With fewer multiplats, you know Nintendo is going to be focusing on attention-grabbing exclusives that few will be expecting, both from their own catalog of IP's and from third parties.
They've done it three times so far with Bay 2, Hyrule Warriors, and Devil's Third, and they recently did it again by announcing that Star Fox U will be arriving BEFORE Zelda this coming year.

I'm really excited to see what's next.
