Fumito Confirms The Last Guardian? "We're Making Progress Under Completely New Conditions"

Fumito Ueda seems to have confirmed the long pending rumor related to The Last Guardian which is "the game is now being develop for PlayStation 4 and not for PlayStation 3 as originally announced". Our friend at Dengeki PlayStation (in the latest issue) asked numerous developer including Fumito Ueda

Glad to hear that the game is still alive.

Magicite1016d ago

Ive a feeling they have completely abandoned PS3, hopefully it lives to its 10th birthday.

mt1016d ago (Edited 1016d ago )

this game and the game your are using as an avatar hopefully they will deliver after the long time of waiting.

I think that they had higher expectations for the PS3 than possible at the time! This is not saying the PS3 is a slouch by any mean, it's just that their vision may have been bigger than they originally envisioned. Which now would mmake the PS4 a more likely candidate simply by it being more powerful and having more to work with on a technical level. Im sure any developer would prefer 5 GB of memory as to 256 MB for starters.

I hope I'm still alive when they finally release it.

Exari1015d ago

but you can prolly play it in heaven if you go there.. unless sony didnt release the ps4 in that region

Yoshida had said previously that the game was re-engineered, this kind of hinted that it had been moved over to the PS4.

It's all guesses from anyone outside of Sony, but IMO PS3 just wasn't up to the task of Team Ico. The reasons we have yet seen it unveiled for PS4 is because optimizing a new platform's development software takes time, it's only recently that the likes of Uncharted 4 were properly shown off, TLG will probably be a stage ahead of that and will require even more development.

IMO give the ICE team more time to deliver on the development tools, optimizing PS4's APIs and Team Ico a little more time with the new physics tools and we'll probably see the game either late next year or in 2016 some time, with a solid release date.

The same is probably true of Agent, I don't think PS3 could deliver the open world environments or technical feats needed to live up to what developers want to accomplish with such concepts, so it's required a completely new platform and enough time with the development environment to do those games the kind of justice they deserve.

For Rockstar it may have even been the case that they thought PS3 would have reached PS2 levels of success, which is why they agreed to the deal in the beginning, PS4 will be a much bigger success than PS3, at least matching PS2 for sales, so there's every reason to think that Agent will make it to PS4 as well as TLG.

You got it wrong man. it's not the PS3 that's at fault, it had more than enough power to run it. It's rather that the Japanese have pretty much all completely lost it this gen. All the excuses in the world will not manage to hide this simple, cold, bitter truth.

Maybe Polyphony Digital, Capcom & Square-Enix manage to maintain themselves at the surface, more or less, but really, when you look at it? the general trend is definitely that japanese video game development houses have never managed to make the transition to this generation of consoles.

Had The Last Guardian been taken from the arms of the Ueda Team and moved over into the arms of the folks at, say, Sony Santa Monica Studio or, y'know, Naughty Dog, this game would be sitting on the shelves at this very moment, and it would've been here for quite a while, I may add.

Gemmol1015d ago

Thank you @master of Unlocking, the guy posting above is doing the same exact stuff that I hate to see on this website, every Sony fan keep doing this, where they make all types of excuses for Sony, I had to up vote you, you seem like a no excuse guy

MrSec841015d ago

@ MoU: You'll notice I said "it's all guesses from anyone outside of Sony", what I will say is that not all visions are executable within a certain set of hardware.
How many developers have said "I couldn't make this game game until this platform came along"?

If TLG was moved to PS4 it would be one of those games. Hell Until Dawn was one of those games, that required a level of realism that clearly isn't possible on PS3.
Driveclub, Killzone Shadowfall, they're all games not possible on PS3.

Also the other developers you mention have finite resources, Ico managed to put out SoTC and Ico, so it's not like they can't be productive developers.
At one point Yoshida even said that other teams were called in to help Team Ico, but the game never materialized, but it hasn't been canceled either (not openly anyway).

@ Gemmol: I'm not making excuses at all, if you're going to complain about a Japanese developer under Sony's ownership for taking ages or not being able to make their concept for a game into a project that can work or actually become a game on a certain platform then TBH you need to look at SSM or Naughty Dog, along with countless other developers, they've all had ideas that are too ambitious.

I'm making educated guesses about a game we know very little about, which make logical sense, not only for why a game has taken ages to become a reality and why it's perhaps been moved to another platform.

Over ambitious vision within a more limited development environment is often the reason why projects get canceled.

Cannot wait to see it again!

hkgamer1016d ago

new conditions? maybe they got more people in the team and less hours? didnt ueda leave because it was too stressful?

brew1016d ago

They were supposed to get more people from the Puppeteer team and more from Knack team when those games finished.

TWB1015d ago

Puppeteer team ? Im glad the people who developed Puppeteer got into a project like this instead of going bankrupt or getting disbanded (since the game didnt sell that well), they did a great job with the Puppeteer.

meganick1015d ago

4k as in 4,000 years? Just kidding, I'm glad to hear this game is still coming.

VitaOwner1016d ago

Save it for 2016. I'm already gonna be buying too many games for PS4 next year.

traumadisaster1016d ago (Edited 1016d ago )

Don't worry...you'll be lucky to get it then. don't think you need to be concerned based on its history.

nX1016d ago

No, 2016 actually makes sense if you've followed the development of this game.

Gamble201016d ago

I expect an E3 2015 teaser trailer. Than a fuller reveal at PSX 2015 In December stating a holiday 2016 release. Then in E3 2016 there will be gameplay and a delay to Spring 2017, where it MIGHT stay unless they delay it to the summer. So... By summer 2017 we should be playing it.

Gamble201016d ago

Although, it will then probably release in a rush despite years of development and won't be fully patched until 2018. So 2018 we are good to go.
