Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal finds itself in an odd place. Despite being a Sonic game, it isn’t meant for fans of the series. Fast-paced platforming takes a step back in favor of exploration, familiar characters sport unfamiliar designs, and new developer Sanzaru Games is left in charge.
It’s worth noting that both this version of Boom and its Wii U counterpart are meant to help market a new TV show on Cartoon Network. Obviously, the target audience is small children. Still, I can’t imagine many kids appreciating Shattered Crystal‘s repetitive gameplay, constant backtracking, or overall blandness.
