VGChartz Writes: "Looking at the total sales of the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Wii U in November shows how the PlayStation 4 has continued to grow its lead over the Xbox One and Wii U. Also the Xbox One passed the Wii U to become the second bestselling home console in the 8th generation.

The PlayStation 4 passed the 16 million mark this month and the Xbox One passed the nine million mark. The PS4 has sold 16.15 million units lifetime, the Xbox One 9.13 million units, and the Wii U 7.95 million units.

Xbox One Total Sales: 9,133,686

Wii U Total Sales: 7,949,941"

Between the $50 markdown and free games, MS was giving away well over $200 off in sales. That they had to dip to that to sell the console is pretty abysmal news.

Sony may have sold PS3s at a loss, but it sure wasn't having to hand out $200+ to get people to buy it.

they didnt have the games to give away at the time so they had to use what they did have which was movies. if you want to promote the format...what better way than by just giving away 5 titles.

It didnt matter that they were competing with the hddvd at the time...this was about selling PS4's and that is just one of a few tactics they used to move systems. the other tactics was dropping the price (twice) within the first year and releasing revised systems with missing features at a reduced production cost.

You do realise that if any of these numbers are to be believed then about 70% of these sales are in just 2 countries.

That means they have sold less than 3 million in the other 40... "awesome"!

You do realise Xbox is for sale in China where they have a 1/4 of the worlds population right? No other console is.. So it has the biggest market by far.. Yet still gets outsold worldwide every week by ps4. At least it outsold the ps4 in the UK and USA for 1 week though right? Also they are selling more xbox ones than xbox 360 did since its launch so although they are behind PS4 they are still making a shed load of cash and sales.. They have however gotta get off there high horses and stop gunning for Sony and be happy with what they got..

Reminds me of WCW this does they were beating the WWF for many years by attacking them direct until the WWF came back super strong with the attitude era and just finished them enough for the then WWE to buy them up. Ending them once and for all and that's what hatred gets you in the end.

Theres enough room for 2 consoles out there as WiiU doesn't even count its in a world of its own.

That is a very good point though. You could argue that the xbox one is available to possibly twice as many people worldwide than the PS4, in which case the number of countries they are both available in really is absolutely meaningless.

Odd, 2-3 days ago ps4 was at 15mill, one week before that 13.5.
Xbox was 8.1 now 9.1

Gonna have to agree with most people saying MS is gonna win last month. There's no way they don't win when they're selling Xbones officially for $330. If Playstation wins November, then that would just be insane, and that kind of spells trouble for the Xbox brand when it doesn't even sell more at a much lower price.

Difference being the casual thing was pretty much all the Wii did. Nintendo caught casual lightning in a bottle with the Wii, but that casual crowd is now gaming on their phones if they're gaming at all. Sony and MS saw the casual dollar and went for it, but as you said it was add on stuff for the core gaming machine.

As for the rest of your point, if you choose your system by how much profit the company makes from the thing, that's your business. I'd rather support a company that's willing to take a loss sometimes than one who consistently puts profits ahead of better tech.

I can't believe that some people thought and, possibly even now think, that the WiiU will sell more than the Xbox One.

If the PS2 compared to PS3's anything to go by (the best example of an exodus of perhaps many casual-ish gamers to the Wii and Xbox360, although not on the scale of the Wii's casual base) sales of the WiiU wouldn't go higher than 50% of original Wii sales.

But, more relevantly, if Gamecube sales are an indication of the number of core Nintendo main console gamers (just over 20 million) then up to 80% of original Wii sales were casual gamers. So the core is 20%

In an unscientific taking of an average:

50% + 20% / 2= 35%

So the WiiU won't sell more than 35 million which is no surprise at all. It would be a great result if it managed to sell that, which would be more than the N64.
If it fails to sell close to what the Gamecube sold (approx 21 million) then 'normal service has resumed' which was that sales decreased by
20-35% each generation between NES - SNES - N64 - GC.

If the WiiU doesn't end up selling more than 13.65 million (35% x 21 million) it is a castastrophe considering the bump in sales that the original Wii had. Even the Dreamcast managed 10 million after their previous console only sold 9.5 million - but the DC had the advantage of best tech until the PS2 came out.

In fact, original Wii sales in mind, the WiiU would have to sell what the Gamecube did to look like it had restored some pride in Nintendo sales.

Can Nintendo get the price of the WiiU down by offering a version with no screenpad and a WiiU Pro controller bundled in instead?

Ps3 and 360 lost billions as "successful" as they were.

Gamecube made so much more money for Nintendo, and that's by a long shot. The XBox brand has yet to be a "success" regardless of sales.

You can sell 300 million consoles and be the greatest console ever, but if you're not making any money then it's a bit redundant.

So why should I have to have talked about profitability?

If Xbox360 lost money despite all those Xbox Live fees that surely must partly be because of the red ring of death. Anything else would be mismanagement or spending too much on advertising considering that there was no special Cell or Bluray in the machine bumping up costs- so Sony's losses are far more understandable as they also gave free online on PS3.
