One of the greatest RPGs of all time will be heading to the PlayStation 4. At PlayStation Experience, Square Enix announced that they will be bringing the 17-year old game to the current generation, somewhat.
Just a Port dont bother reading
Come on Square Enix.... that is all I have to say
FK square and sony for doing this to us.
Square Enix absolutely ruined this event.
Seriously square...you know what the fans want and it isnt a pc port with "upscaled original graphics" We want a full remaster. Is that really to much to ask?
Half expected to be alone in my disappointment with this but glad the majority here share my thoughts. It's like a huge troll.. Square Enix have some sort of obsession in re-releasing all their best games on every platform going.. they must have broken a world record by now.
I wonder how many people in the audience at the event just gasped in amazement when they saw the first few seconds of the trailer...and then just went "Ahhhh B.S." after realizing what it really was. If this new PS4/PC version is $15 or less, I might buy it just to play FFVII again...then again I still have my original PSONE version stashed away in a closet somewhere.
Be realistic about it. To give a modern game the full AAA treatment, it would need to have a AAA budget. Remaking an old classic RPG isn't going to sell as well as the original did, we're not all FF7 enthusiasts that are willing to drop more money into a game we've already played. I'm happy to get a remaster, and honestly in order to make this game full on next gen, it would need to simply be a new game, as they would not be able to do much with the old game without changing the game too much. For instance, using full 3D worlds instead of 3D characters on static 2D backgrounds. Sounds great, but many of the gameplay elements relied on items being in certain locations in those static backgrounds that wouldn't work as well in 3D without making them too easy to find, etc... Just one example of the many changes you'd need to make, and honestly I don't want that masterpiece being messed with too much. I'd rather just see another game set in the FF7 universe.
I was so excited when I saw this in the stream, and then almost immediately disappointed. I mean WTF??
I will buy it if it has some decent trophies.
Get the most hyped fan request and crush it in front of everyone's eyes, use stupid language like "exclusive port", say it will take 6 months for a game that had been ported to toasters and to top it all out the announcer looks super excited about this crap as if I didn't want to punch him in the face already. SE trolling hard, were they trying to wreck PSX or what? @fr0sty Yeah, like if changing an iten's location would ruin a remake... I get what you are trying to say, but that's reaching and obviously isn't what most fans had been requesting for the last 7 years or so... They could remake the game with new tech, change things and still have a great FFVII, maybe not the nostalgia experience you're looking for, but probably an even better game if they make it right.
@fr0sty: "To give a modern game the full AAA treatment, it would need to have a AAA budget." Which is why they could do the same thing they did with the original FF7 and partner with Sony to get that AAA budget. "Remaking an old classic RPG isn't going to sell as well as the original did, we're not all FF7 enthusiasts that are willing to drop more money into a game we've already played." You're right, it'll probably sell better. Did you see the reaction people had with just the frickin' logo on the screen? The disappointment on social media that it's just a port? People WANT this remake. And if you don't think there's a market for it, talk to Naughty Dog about their year old remaster of The Last of Us then say "who wants to play a game we've already played?" "I'm happy to get a remaster, and honestly in order to make this game full on next gen, it would need to simply be a new game, as they would not be able to do much with the old game without changing the game too much. I'd rather just see another game set in the FF7 universe." Have you seen any of the mods the PC version of this game has had? People made the character models look like Advent Children models. Items? You think the placement of the items is anyone's concern? You act as though there are no games that have a similar method of hiding items these days, but there have been. SE hate money. This remake would make them more money than anything else they could ever come out with, especially since they are intent on bastardizing Final Fantasy with each new release that comes out.
SE really know how to take the piss
talk to Naughty Dog about their year old remaster of The Last of Us then say "who wants to play a game we've already played?" - There is a BIG difference between remaking a game that is a year old, and still fresh on most people's minds, and remaking a game that is 20 years old. This isn't like remaking Grim Fandango, either. A game of this scale would require an epic budget to properly remake for next gen... and just because a few fans cry over the internet about it does not translate into it instantly being a multi-million seller. Remember, most gamers don't even visit sites like this. They just buy whatever they see on TV or hear about from their friends. Final Fantasy as a brand has not been selling all that hot lately, and that's with new games that nobody has played before, not remakes that some will skip because they already know what is going to happen. From a business perspective, it's too risky of an investment to tie up teams that should be making the next FF game on remaking an old one... and FF7 would require a very large team to do properly. Squeenix was complaining about how long it would take to remake for the ps3 generation, and now we've moved on to another gen where people expect even higher production value in their games. That, coupled with the design changes needed to accommodate a full on remake, leaves me wishing they'd just make a new game set in the same universe. They would have more creative license to explore new things without having to worry about breaking what the game used to be.
Lol, at this point the port was more probable than a remake, and here we are watching this indirect insult to gaming. But worry naught, teh remake will cometh after FF15 quadritrilogyepisodicseries. They aren't remaking FF7 mostly due to the fact, that we're still buying a rehash, and partly due to Advent Children(PS3 tech demo) quality they want to achieve which FF15 is a prelude to. It will be milked along with the movie. It could've come earlier instead of FF15 but they messed up with crystal tools and had to recuperate losses with sub-par sequels and cut the original game(FF13). Versus would've been a part of Fabula Nova, and after it, remake was in plans. But they had to fill the timetable release slot(shareholders), so they used the very same title and shove it as a port. Dem shareholders have no freakin' idea of the difference except lower revenue but with lower production cost. No worries, just patience. Like they say: "preashe be exshitted".
@fr0sty: "- There is a BIG difference..." Yeah A) It's more deserving of a remake, and B) It carries with it the nostalgic dreams of, in this case, over 9 million fans who've been wanting it since the PS3 teaser video when PS3 was announced. The fact that you're trying convey the idea that people wanted a year old game like TLOU remastered more than FFVII shows a massive amount of ignorance and lack of basic awareness about the FFVII remake. "and just because a few fans...." A few fans? Wow, you continue showing complete lack of awareness. Here's a small example of the desire for this game. http://www.destructoid.com/... 10,000 gamers in Japan, and that's just those polled and just Japan. This game is desired by WAY more than "just a few fans." It sounds like you're trying to downplay a lot. "Remember, most gamers..." -Citation needed. Core gamers represent the most money and time spent on the industry, and core gamers DO visit sites like these. Core gamers also are where casual gamers get most of their information from as tv ads for games are at all time lows. "Final Fantasy as a brand..." Final Fantasy XIII sold 6 million copies. So did FFX and a few other FF games. The following 2 sold poorly because the FFXIII trilogy sucks and people weren't going to be suckered in again, but FFXIII shows that the demand for a good FF game is strong. And I don't know where you're getting this idea that no one wants remakes when A) You obviously didn't pay attention to the entire life of the PS3, B) You don't pay attention to how many complain about the lack of B.C. and C) You obviously ignored the hype surrounding the release of Suikoden 1&2 for the PS3. You aren't being successful in your attempts at downplaying remakes. "From a business perspective..." Again, TLOU Remastered, Tomb Raider Definitive Edition, etc.. etc... etc.... prove you wrong. This remake would be a license to print money. I have to ask if you've been blind for the years people have been tuning into anything SE related looking for an announcement of an FFVII remake. "Squeenix was complaining..." Please, SE were lying through their teeth. There are people making large scale games with dev teams of 4 people with incredible polish and scale. And point out where anyone said they expect the remake to scale with the generations? You're making stuff up with that one. "That, coupled with the design changes..." And have it turn out like FF13 or worse? No thanks. You need to spend some time on Google because you're showing some huge ignorance about this.
I almost wet my pants when I saw the title. Don't worry they are still dry. Not saying what kind of wet they was going to be if it was a proper FFVII. Square has a goal to not be the king of TURN based SUMMON SPELLING JRPG's. So there need's to be a real mob crowd financing of square's replacement.
One should not be surprised about since we all know how the way Squenix is now run. Want better company decisions, they need to clean house from top (especially the top) to bottom and get new people to run it...
What if they are testing the waters, if this gets a decent amount of sales it could be re made for consoles and pc.
Haha, think you're clutching at strings bro.
Yeah, we should all buy this in the vain hope that they are testing the waters for a remake! It's all a ruse. I urge every PS4 owner to buy this, instead of a cash in it could be the gateway to a TRUE REMAKE! Any pc gamer that hasn't bought it, buy that too, it could be the straw that broke the camels back! Dance to their tune you monkeys!
I'm actually happy about this in reality as I love the game and it also means they have a working PS1 emulator on PS4. Meaning no doubt Sony can now port PS1 games in the future to ps4. What worried me is like previous games they may yet re-charge us..
clutching at more straws than a masturbating scarecrow!!!
@Gamer1982: This is a port of the PC version recently released on Steam. There isn't a working PS1 emulator on the PS4.
Wasn't they testing the water when PS3 received FFVII through the PS1 classics? What about PSP offer? I think they tested the water enough for something the feedback is so overwhelming the need for any market testing is very arguable in the first place.
What if they're just mugging us off for even more money!
I saw some guy literally go Mental and jumping up and down before the screen showed some sh1t a$$ graphics looolll
When I heard him say 17 years ago I got so excited thinking it was a remake lol and thought holy crap if this is real then this is the biggest announcement ever made, then they showed the trailer and disappointment followed. Sony should just pay 100 mil to SE and co produce a remake with them. The amount of consoles alone that would sell for Sony would be very worth it. Or heck MS get a FF7 remake going and I'll finally buy one of your consoles lol.
"Just a Port" It's worse than it would appear at first, its actually a port of a port. PS1 ported to PC ported to PS4, its like portception.
Just a port? Aw man. I got hyped for sec. Typical SE not giving people what they want.
I couldn't help but laugh watching the "announcement" trailer... I absolutely adore the game but they are milking it far too much now..
Square Enix has really gone down the toilet. I grew up with them since the first final fantasy. I owned every single final fantasy game but have now lost all interest in them since I bought the garbage that is FFXIII. Now they are just living off their glory days.
This was a disappointment, I played the crap out of this on my PS1. Why can't they just give us what we want (Advent Children Version of this game) don't they know if they make it we will give them our money???
Definitely the only bleak moment of the event. For a second people almost believe it was a remake that would use the capacity of this generation. But no, Square-Enix was just announcing a port of FFVII PC version on to the PS4... I'm sure this is what we can call an hard-troll!!!
Even Kojima doesn't troll this good.
I was so mad yet laughed so hard at this. I was like OMG, they did it. Then they kept showing the PC version, and I was like maybe PC version for Vita. Then I saw Spring 2015 and was like no they wouldn't. Sure enough they did. Shame on your Square -_-
He was so excited I couldn't even be annoyed, it was just funny.
And why if it's just the PC port of the PS1 version do we have to wait until Spring 2015, with the PS4 shouldn't a port of a 17 year old game take like 10 minutes to port over at this point? I mean it would be like porting Mario 3 at this point, Nintendo knows that every console requires a Mario 3 port of some kind. FF VII is the same, people will continue buying it. It should come free in the mail with samples of Tide at this point.
Man he said exclusive port and I dropped a perfectly good chicken wing out of my mouth, than come to find it its just a port straight from the PS1 version smdh. GTFOH Square!!
When i watched that i just excited and saying "oh man, at last they did it!!!". But got worried when they only show classic footage and bam! it's just a PC port -_- I already learnt that i can't have my hopes high when it comes to SE :(
This was such a troll move on their part... After all the fans asking for some kind of remake, they come up on stage with the FFVII logo behind them... Just to port the dang PC version over? That's really lame...
How to troll a fanbase.
I kept expecting them to transition from the PC before graphics to the after, stunning new PS4 remake graphics but then it just ended...
How is something that's been released on everything else - except Xbox consoles - exclusive to the PS4?
From my understanding, Sony has rights to publish this game on home consoles. Even if it got remade, Sony would still have those rights, which means it would always be a PS exclusive in the home console world. Square is free to publish it on non-consoles though. ON Topic I would love a complete remake, but it is what it is. It's a great game, and while it won't be the most visually spectacular game, the PC version still looked good for it's time, and if they update the graphics so much better for playing it than firing up my old copy(or digital version on the Vita). Still Square...that's a pretty crappy troll since they know people want a remake.
By everything else I assume you mean PlayStation 1 (original), 2 (Backwards compatible), 3 (Backwards compatible) and the PC. I don't think this classifies as everything else. The problem you have with the original PS1 game playing on a PS2 or PS3 for that matter to a large screen HDTV is that the picture is fairly "grainy" and a remake would at least (or hopefully) result in a much better picture. To remake FF7 would IMHO make that game a different game. Re-mastering like they did with FFX and FFX-2 would at least give better graphics to display on a HDTV. That said you would think that Square would bring out a remaster of FF4, 5 and 6 since IMHO they have a better story line although don't get me wrong FF7 is still a very good game, it's just annoying that someone stole my copy. although I still have my PS1 FF8 version. Note: When I say "backwards compatible" I mean all PS2's and PS3's will play PS1 games, only the FAT PS3 will play PS2 games.
This is such a horrible troll. Saw the logo, and was like "It's the remake, it's the remake". Then they announced the PC version… Who gives a crap!?
Hopefully a remake in the future, but port for now
I'm afraid they might screw up the remake and ruin everything.:(
PC version of FF7 is coming exclusively to ps4, what's what he actually said
it will probably have trophies now, as a port of the pc version, that was a port of another pc version. that was a port of the playstation version.
That was like watching a presentation in a classroom and the kid presenting just half-assed the project and didn't want to be there.
heh, just keep becoming irrelevant Square-Enix. Eidos will take you over...
Such a letdown. Saw the logo on the screen and thought at long last the remake is happening but unfortunately not. :(
That was the biggest troll announcement ever. That was just cruel. Absolutely cruel.
That was painful to watch.
This was the worse announcement period
You had ONE job Square Enix. ONE JOB! XD
Kind of a bummer we all wanted a remake :/ I'll still get this tho
Lol Sony truly would have ended Microsoft
What a fucking dick move. That was the absolute worst thing they could have done regarding final fantasy 7. My opinion of square enix has never been lower.
I'm looking forward to playing it again, been a few years for me. The PS1 graphics really didn't hold up well though, but the PC version was alright. Think the way it was announced was just too trollish.
Best and worst troll job lol
i'm very disappointed
Screw you, Square Enix. You knew what we wanted.
This was soo bad I almost feel like they did this on purpose...Maybe an E3 2015 FF7 remake announcement???
Fuck off Square, seriously >:/
