The author worked hard with Polish dev Techland to ensure the game would get this representation right.
who cares? just make it good game. many games have strong female characters, making a promise for this only points out that "awkward" moment that you may be a female in the gaming world and keeps all this nonsense relevant. all it seems like is that this whole gamergate and feminism thing increases segregation and does everyone a disservice. i hate society. everyone is hated unequally. wheres No Mans Sky an VR when you need it?
I care, I hate that females are portrayed as useless, over sexualised, or power hungry bithces, let's see some real women in video games and people will take them more seriously.
if they are portrayed as useless (please explain what you mean by that actually), its because the developers vision was the "damsel in distress" role take. they arent meant to play a strong role obviously. there are plenty of games with strong women, lots of them, with either a main role or as a side kick, or just as side characters. over sexualized... both men and women are over sexualized in games... super masculine, super feminine. just how it always has been. i guess when one only points out one side of things thats all that one sees. there are plenty of "real" women characters, there always has been... as long as i can remember. off the top of my head going way back: Jill RE1, i didnt play all the FF games but 9 and 12 had strong female characters, heavenl sword, mirrors edge, gravity rush. you have to look out for them, but not every devleoper is going to make a game to cater to everyones taste. i just see them pointing this out as part of the problem, as well as complaints from people who have not heard of such games with strong, useful female characters. <--thats the best one.
I'd say there's a spectrum of personalities across both genders. From weak to strong, generous to devious, or reserved to sexual. None of them are more real than any other, and I've seen plenty of representation for all of them.
well said rooted, i share the same opinion.
Yea I know what you mean postedup its funny that this crap comes out right after that bs collaboration video ign did. Where they read a bunch of crap off of a teleprompter telling other men how they don't know shit. My girlfriend has been dying with laughter at most of this bs. Like you said, how about they focus on making a good game.
yeah its all bullshit that strikes controversey and gets hits. where would most websites be without this kind of nonsense?
Allso you guys should be happy beacuse they have revealed the real specs for the PC version of the game. who cares? I'm pretty sure the people that care, cares. "it seems like is that this whole gamergate and feminism thing increases segregation" No the feminism thing increases segregation, some people who are pro gamergate ( and even some who aren't) didn't want this, thats the main relation between gamergate and feminism. Just wanted to clear that up. For the record I see nothing wrong with making strong representation of females in a game, but I do get what you are saying. We don't need to know about it just do it and don't make it a big deal.
"the people that care, cares" lol touche. thanks for clearing that up, i really dont know what gamergate is, i just jumpped back into gaming news, saw it, and assumed it was stupid, hah.
Yes, folks. Bullying can, in fact, get you whatever you want. I'm all for equality, but developers shouldn't feel pressured to portray anyone a certain way. They should just create.
It damn well better, and African American, Asian, Native American and Indian, Russian, South African, Malaysian, hetero and homosexuals, transgenders, old people, babies, and all sorts of different animals and plants...or I'm not buying it!! Shoehorn all of it in. I don't care about story or locale or anything. Get your PC straight, cuz I don't actually care if it's any good or not. WtF. Just make a good game.
You left out German and Scottish...I am of both heritages...and you left both out? Racist piece of trash, you are :P
The fact that they even need to address something like this is ridiculous. Isn't the whole point of quality not to draw attention to something?
Not since Affirmative Action.
Great. Just make a half black, half hispanic lesbian cripple who doesn't afraid of anything and kills men for fun so we can get a few groups off our back for a minute. Really, I never cared what type of attributes a character had. All that mattered was likability. These social justice warriors don't get it. They just force themselves into our faces and pressure developers. Can't stand another whiny group, I swear. Let's just give NAMBLA a game, make it XB1 exclusive and call it a day.
A North American Marlon Brando Look Alike game would be amazing!!
And so they give in to the feminist zealots, like so many other devs. Looks like I'll be avoiding another game on principle. What's the obsession with "strong women"? What's wrong with women as they *are*; a variety of normal people who are both strong and weak, emotional and logical, independent and dependent? Why must devs portray the feminist ideal of the world and not the world just, as it is? By all means make female characters more engaging, but let's not resort to the overused "strong, independent wimin" trope every time feminists start whinging. Devs need to take a principled approach and stand up to feminist bullying.
Damn well put, spartan! "a variety of normal people who are both strong and weak, emotional and logical, independent and dependent" is something that should be said every time this topic gets brought up again.
Whats funny is a "strong woman" doesnt mean a meaningful character, it means a 90 pound short haired beauty queen who can drop 300 pound male warrior hand to hand without breaking a sweat. A proper backstory of meaningful plot is optional. Look at the Witcher. Triss Merigold is the definition of a strong female character but she will not get recognition because it does not fot this new liberal assasult on freedom of creativity.
I totally agree. Triss is a great, engaging female character who is powerful while retaining her femininity. These days, it seems that all many feminists are asking for are those like Cassandra in DA:I.
yup, well said. plus bubs.
why am i even still surprised by this. you bleat bleat about it being the writers choice when there's no female characters, but when the writer wants to add more female characters it's all some enforced feminist agenda. seems the writer is only allowed to write the characters they want if they're the characters you want. so you manchildren are in fact doing exactly what you accuse the "liberals", "feminists", "SJWs", and "white knights" of doing. hypocrisy proving the misogyny of certain gamers? who'd thunk it?
It is the writer's choice, and he is the one blogging about it without some interviewer prodding it out of him. Plus it's a story about a zombie apocalypse and weak/useless people tend to die anyway. I just don't like the idea that other writers/developers may be hesitant to craft the stories they want to because of how it'll be perceived by people obsessed with gender portrayals.
"Strong female representation" should not be considered unanimously good PR. It should just be a design choice which some people will like more than others. A lot of devs right now will make these decisions in fear of having Twitter mobs harass them, journalists berate their game unfairly or have petitions demand their product be removed from shelves (see GTAV removed from Target Australia). Even still, you'll not that nobody is going to bully the dev over this decision; we're not going to run off to change.org and start a nasty petition to ban this person's game. We're just going to voice our disappointment indirectly (not to the devs themselves) and hold off on buying the game. The mature way to change things is to respect that you are only one opinion among many, which may not have the bravery to give voice to these, and vote with your wallet. Feminists and "SJWs" have a right to hold the views they do, but they should of course be condemned for playing dirty (which often takes the form of cyber-bullying devs and publishers, or insulting opponents). The difference between you and I is that while I respect your views on what content games should have, you probably do not respect mine. Strange thing about liberalism is that in today's society, the greatest enemies to the views of Mill, Locke and Adam Smith are "feminists", "SJWs" and "white knights". I am a liberal; feminists are generally not.
You are not doing a good job of arguing points. These developers are being forced by liberals to be inclusive otherwise they wouldnt he announcing it. But you are clearly one of those PC warriors by your incessant name calling and stereotyping.
@hazelamy: lol an hero
"Dying Light Will Have Strong Female Representation", sure, I saw plenty of zombified female character models.
After reading these comments I'm convinced a good deal of privileged people think they are the only ones that matter in this world. Bunch of entitled brats who have been enabled for far too long.
