The Xbox One's killer feature

While the Microsoft tile interface isn’t universally loved, it’s still far better than what you have on the PlayStation 4, but that’s not the killer feature I’m talking about. What I love, and I truly mean love, about the Xbox One, is that I can be playing a game literally seconds after grabbing the controller.

I saw this article and it made me laugh. The author claims that there is a significant difference between cold boot times and loading times for games which is absolute nonsense.
I found a video (at the bottom) that shows that PS4 takes nearly the same time to start up from a cold boot and resuming from standby mode. The difference between the boot times from standby mode is about 10 seconds in favor of the XB1. However, from cold boot, the PS4 is about 40 seconds faster than the XB1.

I also found this article:
http://www.geek.com/games/p...

Install to Play NBA2K14

"Both games install automatically once you put either disc in its respective console. After you skip through the splash screens on the PS4 version, you can instantly begin a Quick Game. That’s the only option, but that will differ from game to game. Killzone Shadow Fall, for instance, doesn’t have a sports-style quick game option, but the game sequentially loads levels. During install, the Xbox One took about six to seven minutes before you could load the game and access the same Quick Game option. As for the total installs, both are 43GB on your console’s HDD, about one-tenth the size of the stock 500GB hard drive. The PS4 full install took 36 minutes, while the Xbox One install took ten minutes more. Whatever the Xbox One was or wasn’t doing behind the scenes, the PS4 version not only installs 10 minutes ahead of the Xbox One version, but gives you control of the game instantly, whereas the Xbox One takes about six minutes."

Game loading (XB1 is 6 seconds faster)

"even though the Xbox One takes longer to install and allows you to play during, once the game is fully installed, that version loads about six seconds faster than the PS4 version."

Console boot times

"When both consoles cold boot, the PS4 turns on in just 20 seconds while the Xbox One turns on in about one minute and ten seconds. When both consoles boot from standby, the PS4 turns on in about three seconds, while the Xbox One takes about 12."

There's also PlayStation 4 PlayGo

http://static.gamespot.com/...

http://www.psdevwiki.com/ps...

PS4 PlayGo allows players to start playing certain games in less than one minute and while the game continues to install itself on your HDD.

The article did make me chuckle though. The area in which the Xbox One is actually faster, booting from standby/rest mode, the difference between the two systems is about 10 seconds. Killer feature? This article made me chuckle.

i really like the fact you can shut off the x1 and resume your game where you left off. i am really jealous PS4 doesn't have that when PSP already could do it..

mmcglasson1108d ago

That feature for PS4 was announced a long time ago (before PS4 launched). PS4 will have that feature, it just hasn't been put into place yet.

dirkdady1108d ago (Edited 1108d ago )

Also that feature doesn't work for all games on Xbox one just some. I believe msft said its still a beta version of it.

I think challenge both Sony and msft is finding is retaining certain types of large games all in memory. I'm assuming Sony is choosing not to release the feature half baked and msft taking an iterative rollout approach.

URNightmare1108d ago

When I read the article I thought there was actually a feature. Something in the likes of Share Play.

What a waste of time this article.

tmh35931108d ago

Actually the one has a better feature, setting a friends or siblings Xbox name under your home Xbox and vice versa you can play all of the digitally purchased games from both ends at the same time so if my bro buys battlefield 4 and I didn't I could d play it with him or by myself at anytime.. So yea alot better than share

His main claim was "I can be playing a game literally seconds after grabbing the controller."

A point in which he is right.

Because when you have booted the system back up 10 seconds faster, you then can jump straight into the game where you left it off instantly, with no startup screen/loading etc. Now this doesnt work with every game (online games doesn't work since you will be dc'd)

He is not saying that he means seconds after buying the game.
And he clearly means after you have installed the game like in everyday use.

Dont know if you missed that on purpose or not.
Anyways your efforts in downplaying his point made me chuckle :)

freshslicepizza1108d ago

god forbid anyone making remarks about how the xbox one may be better in some areas on n4g. suspend and resume is something sony has promised yet still hasn't implemented on the ps4. once they do you will read comments about how great this feature is. until then its not really anything anyone cares about which is why posters continue to downplay it.

Ballsack1108d ago

@moldybread

What RUBBISH...playstation fans have berated sony for still not giving us this feature me included...unlike certain ms fanatics we will tell sony what we think good or bad.

As for this article god knows how this tripe got submitted...

And as ui go i prefer the ps4s less confusing snappier ui to my xbox ones cluttered confusing ui..the lag i get is not atrocious but its noticeable...

Bigpappy1108d ago

I expected people to rebuke the feature by bringing features on PS4 which they see as better. Instead, a lot of very bitter responses over a guy saying this is an Xbox feature he prefers over the ps4.

I have a longer list, but don't care to join the pissing contest. People will figure out what they like on their own. I am not here to sell Xbox One.

Dread1108d ago

@Ballsack

That was the funniest thing I have ever read in the comment section of N4G.

Sony fans are known for their fairness and understanding and respect for other systems. And they always critizise Sony, when it is merited../s

But did the article make you chuckle?

Palitera1108d ago

I agree with you. I have both and XB1's boot is much slower than PS4's.

Also the article mentions UI. It is incredible how bad the UI is on XB1. Not only nearly every section has a different layout, it also keeps changing all the time, and not necessarily for better or worse, it just can't keep the same.

To me, that turns on the XB1 only once or twice per month, it means I don't even see the same layout about 5 times in a row.

Finally, the UI tries to be smart and auto customize for you, based on what you most use. Once again, chaos.

Oh, one more: advertisement EVERYWHERE!

XB1's OS can "work" better, but PS4's UI is much quicker and clearer.

SniperControl1108d ago

Yeah, thats the one thing i hate about the X1 is the crappy metro UI, it's just to cumbersome for my liking, thank god for pinning.

BlissSeeker1108d ago

@abzdiine
PSP can do that? Had no idea haha.

GUTZnPAPERCUTZ1108d ago

I can turn my X1 on and go to GTA V and it instantly is where I left off in the middle of the dessert or wherever... I don't have to wait for the game to load. My PS4 Can't do that, so I think that was the killer feature, stop being so defensive.

Used the wrong embed code for the video. Here's the correct one.

Am I misreading something. Because it sounds like the PS4 boots faster from a cold boot and a standby boot. It installs a game faster, you are able to play some games while installing. Because from a cold boot it say PS4 takes 20 seconds and X1 takes over a minute. From standby it says PS4 took about 3 seconds X1 took 12... I don't see how that's in favor of XB1... That's sounds like in favor of PS4.

The only advantage I saw in this was a few games loaded faster on X1...

IrishSt0ner1107d ago

Yea your missing what the feature does. Example, I turn xbox on an it takes these 10seconds, I press GTAV and get instantly put in-game where I left off. On PS you have to load the game, which will take substantially longer.

mmcglasson1107d ago

Ah yes a feature that was announced for PS4 before release but isn't implemented yet. That makes sense. Thank you.

IrishSt0ner1107d ago

I say it'll still come with one of the next big updates, although to be honest I find the most benefit from just normal usage, as in switching between apps and being able to go straight back into the game... which the PS4 can already do... so it's kinda dumb to call it a XB1 killer feature IMO.

DigitalRaptor1108d ago (Edited 1108d ago )

As a sum of its parts, this is a horrible, misinforming article.
---------

"The first round of the next generation console battle was won a long time ago. Not because Sony brought a significantly superior product to market, but because Microsoft did pretty much everything possible to sabotage the launch of the Xbox One."

Microsoft dun goofed, but PS4 was going to outsell and outperform the Xbone regardless. PS3 did the same with all its negative against it and released a year later than the 360. How does someone expect a console that gets everything right the next time around to do worse than that? What is happening now is what happens when the PlayStation is a stronger global brand than Xbox.
---------

"Yes, the PS4 is marginally more powerful, thanks for the most part to its more advanced memory architecture, but anyone honest comparing an Xbox One version of a game with the PS4 version will tell you that it’s almost impossible to discern a difference."

Marginally? Stop feeding the delusions. The technical differentiation is significant, than "marginal". The technical specs are out there and PS4 outclasses the Xbone in almost every area by a significant degree.

Expecting to see vast differences in multiplatform games only a year into the consoles' lifecycle is not only dumb, it's borderline retardation. Especially when most games that people are trying to use as examples are cross-gen, or indie.

And of course you can discern a difference. If you're a seasoned gamer and not a casual player, then of course you will know what a crisp 1080p+ image looks like compared to a lower resolution version that has more compressed textures, less dense environmental detail, inferior shadow maps and more artifacts by comparison.
---------

"No, the reason that Sony won hearts and minds this time last year wasn’t because it had a more powerful console, it was because it had a far more affordable console."

Or both, maybe? Why all the attempts to make this all about ONE thing? PS4 is better than PS3 in the sense that most gamers care for. It has more games, it's gamer focused, better prospects for the future, AND it's cheaper, AND it has better marketing. AND PlayStation continues to be the superior global gaming brand.

You can't even disprove my logic here, because PS3 was FAR more expensive than the cheapest Xbox 360 SKU, for almost an entire generation, and it sold faster pretty much every year, and broke down a 10 million unit lead.
---------

"and the groundbreaking decision to offer the Xbox One without Kinect, thus bringing its price in line with the PlayStation 4."

"Groundbreaking"?? This is crazy. MS HAD to cut the Kinect loose. Why is is groundbreaking when everyone was screaming at them to drop the requirement that should never have been, from the beginning?

DigitalRaptor1108d ago (Edited 1108d ago )

"While the Microsoft tile interface isn’t universally loved, it’s still far better than what you have on the PlayStation 4"

No, the Xbone interface is a Windows inspired bloat that only works well enough when you've got Kinect hooked up as was intended and use your voice. You want to dig into the options, it's a joke. PS4's interface is faster, incredibly sleek and gaming focused. To get between you UI and your game, all you do is press the PS button. Pressing the same button on Xbone doesn't even do that. On PS4, the options are all there, in easy organised reach - no BS padding everywhere else. Tiles on PS4 aren't unnecessarily large just to be able to fill the grid that the interface's design is based on.
---------

"What I love, and I truly mean love, about the Xbox One, is that I can be playing a game literally seconds after grabbing the controller."

Again….. WTF is this s***? You can be playing a game literally seconds after grabbing the controller on PS4 too. I mean why don't we bring up the install times for both consoles and see just how quick (or slow) the Xbone is at installing games compared to PS4. It's a day and night difference. It's worse than the difference between PS3/360 install times last gen.

This article screams damage control. For someone who supposedly owns both, this article is one of the most uninformed I've ever seen. And now… just read the in the comments from one of the staff has admitted that this article is an advert that was pitched to them. I'll say no more.

B1uBurneR1108d ago

Not going anywhere for a while? Have a snicker. As much as You poodles would like, the PS4 is not that much more powerful than the X1. When you guys compare the two if didn't know better I would of think you guys were referring to the Wii U. But yet can't face the fact that X1 has the better overall OS and features. Get over yourself.

CernaML1108d ago

"Fact"? "Get over yourself"?
You're one to talk.

zeuanimals1108d ago

The only feature that the XBO has over the PS4 is resume-play, which Sony's working on implementing. There's no word on XBO getting something like Shareplay or Remoteplay.

And better overall OS is subjective. I really don't care about either one since one's annoying to navigate and one's not customizable enough.

Mehmeh1108d ago

"To get between you UI and your game, all you do is press the PS button. Pressing the same button on Xbone doesn't even do that."

Im curious then, what does pushing the xbox home button do for you?
Because whenever i push it i get back to xbox home/ui.

" I mean why don't we bring up the install times for both consoles and see just how quick (or slow) the Xbone is at installing games compared to PS4. It's a day and night difference."

I would dare to say that time saved on everyday use (loading screens/booting up etc) is more important than a one time install. But thats just me.

marlinfan101108d ago

you and igivehugs comments scream damage control just as much as the article does lol. look at the responses this articles getting all because its about a "killer feature" on xbox. relax, its not that serious.

Spotie1108d ago

Yes, let's relax and let the Microsoft faithful spread a bunch of BS and hype like they did last gen.

It's not a feature, first and foremost. Second, it's only referring to a very specific set of events. Third, it's hardly killer when it's mere seconds.

Why is this worthy of an article? Why are you and the rest of the Xbox fans defending it?

These are the exact type of articles that took something small and blew them up last gen in order to make the 360 look good and the PS3 look bad. I guess we're just fortunate it's not one of the larger publications, like Kotaku using doctored video to say GT5's load times were insanely long.

gangsta_red1108d ago

@ Spotie

"Why are you and the rest of the Xbox fans defending it?"

The better question is:

Why are you and the sony fans trying so desperately hard to attack this?

It's a Xbox related feature that the author is talking about and you, Digital and Igivehugs are coming in here raging out of control trying so hard to put a negative on this while parading Sony's PS4.

It just reeks of desperation and fear as if any story that paints X1 in a positive light will somehow destroy your precious all powerful console.

It's insecurity at it's finest.

Mister_G1108d ago (Edited 1108d ago )

Have the install times been fixed yet? XB1 takes minutes, PS4 seconds.

Bennibop1108d ago

That is the bit I hate about my x1, I get a brand new game and launch day and it takes 40 mins to download 3.5hrs in Halo MCC case.

roland821108d ago

Halo also had a 20gb patch to download which is probably why it took so long.

Bennibop1108d ago

Have 100mb broadband so not sure its should!
