As the new head of Xbox, Phil Spencer went a long way to correct the public persona of the Xbox One, and he made a lot of right decisions to benefit gamers. That's why he earns this writer's game industry figure of the year award.
Phil is the man. He's a gamer like us I'm very confident that he and MS will continue to deliver amazing games with the combination of sequels and new IP's Looking forward to 2015 and beyond for Xbox One
While I love virtually everything Phil has done to the Xbox brand as a whole, and I'm extremely optimistic for its future with him at the helm, I'm going to retain some measure of caution in my approach. At the end of the day, he's a public figure, and I'm pretty sure we have all been burned by public figures in whom we have placed too much trust from one time to another. I like what I've seen of Phil Spencer a lot. But my trust only carries so far, and the best I'll ever muster is a healthy amount of cautious optimism. I'd recommend the same for others, irrespective of your platform of choice.
Phil Spencer should be credited for getting XBO back in the game. But he should also be criticised for his anti-gamer policies which include paying to restrict content on other platforms, paying to restrict features resolution parity, and demanding parity from indie developers.
Demanding parity against indie devs?? Who the hell cares about the resolution of a side scrolling arcade shooter!?? Also how do you think platforms get exclusives? Yeah, big fat checks in their name. That is the business.
Classy Phil.....very well deserved. all i want now is a fuzion frenzy remake/sequel. great article though.
People think Phil's the savior of the X1. True, but hes also the savior of the Xbox in general. He'll make sure there won't be a big drought of exclusives like it was on 360. And continue the game focused road. With that said I can't wait until next years exclusives.
Phil's one of the reasons I bought an Xbox One a couple of weeks ago. This guy is going to fight to make sure that he does everything he can to make Xbox One the best place to play. Tomb Raider timed exclusivity and all of these awesome console bundles are just the start. I'm also looking forward to what his plans are regarding PC gaming.
"you can't win, it's pointless to keep fighting! Why, Mr Spencer? Why do you persist?" "BECAUSE I CHOOSE TO." -the Chosen One
http://i.imgur.com/GfewC69.... Yup, I need to do some work now. Phil Spencer is a G. He doesn't have an easy task that's for sure.
Congratulations Phil, well deserved.
Congrats Phil, you are one of the main reasons I fully confide in the brand even more now than ever.
Without a doubt.
Even ps4 guys cant argue with this. Being a ps4 guy myself.... he just is the #1 guy lol
As someone who tries to be neutral, Phil Spencer has definitely turned around the Xbox brand. After E3 2013 i hated the new Xbox, my friends would laugh at how bad it seemed. Now, its turning out to be a great console with great support, so yes, thanks Phil. However, for a "game industry figure" award, i would think that an actual developer or creator (e.g. Miyamoto) would deserve the award over the xbox boss, but this is just my opinion
As a PS guy I have to agree with him being the industry figure of the year. He's certainly the only exec that's been talked about at length. He's brought about a positive image to the XBox brand, and has become a good public face that was much needed for Xbox. Before this year, I never thought much of him. Never disliked him, just thought he lacked personality despite seeming passionate about gaming in general. He's certainly stepped up his game since taking the helm.
The best thing to happen to the Xbox brand in years.
He's definitely working hard at the new position, that's for sure. Good for the guy, he deserves it.
What makes him so good at what he does is he is a gamer, not a suit but a gamer. He was also an ex-developer so he knows the creative process and he knows the business side of things as well. Microsoft is blessed to have that brother in charge.
He is getting a free pass as far as I am concerned. He was as much to blame as Matrick and all the other execs at MS for their piss poor performance over the last 4 years or so. He was right there in the thick of it like the rest of them. While things have improved recently that is out of necessity more than anything else. He has a long way to go before he should be declared the saviour of XB1, that title goes as much to Sony, they are just as responsible for MS changing their approach........or you could believe spencer when he states "they were listening to feedback from their loyal fans".
You sound like a hater. Just because he was there doesn't mean he was any real position to change anything. Xbox was going to improve regardless. The same games were coming out and the same or similar updates were going to come. What Phil did was add another layer of transparency and closeness with the fans. He emphasized more than anything that while the Xbox One does all the great things, at its core it would be about the games. I think Phil is the Xbox Savior. He truly gets it.
I am not "a hater", I am a consumer with a memory. Not too long ago he tried to convince me that Tomb Raider was an exclusive, a move that cheesed me right off incidently. Only after concerted pressure did he tell the truth and admit they had paid for a timed exclusive. MS are trying to win over the consumer but I am not blind nor stupid. Perhaps naively, how people and companies behave matters to me, its why I wont use Amazon, Starbucks and several others as they wont pay their fair share of tax here in the uk. Spencer is trying but every now and then the mask slips like the tomb raider example above, and I am reminded why I went off XBox in the first place.
Why is it anyone that has fair criticism is a hater, it's not like he's being immature, stomping his feet and yelling "XBOX SUCKS' at the top of his voice You're saying that Phil is the Xboxs saviour but ANY PERSON and I mean ANYONE who took over Don after the shit storm the were pulled into would be the "saviour", you want to know why? Because they would be following the SAME PLAN higher ups at Microsofts would give them. These changes and 180s are because their real plan, the thing's they wanted to do were faced with backlash. So really Phil isn't a saviour, he's just a guy who can put on a nice smile and go ahead with Microsfts new plan. He's just a front man and was picked because another suit like Don would of been a silly choice. Even if Don managed to hang on to his job he would of done the same things as Phil Spencer...to turn things around and make people buy an Xbox One. If the Xbox One did very well in terms of sales, of this "for the gamers" attitude" wouldn't be happening.
He did not make the final decision. Don Mattrick did. The boss always has final decision with the direction they'll take. Piss poor performance they sold more 360s than Sony did PS3s. 86 million x box 360's to 83 PS3s of course you guys will disagree with that but that not surprising your dealing with people on N4G who don't know any better. Microsoft sold more consoles in November too. I can't wait for the reaction and read the excuses given. Phil Spencer is masterminding a good comeback. [email protected] Wrong the last press for Sony was November 2013 about PS3 sales it was 80 million shipped Worldwide. Microsoft last press release June 2014 it was 85 million. X BOX 360 has been outpacing the ps3 sales all year since November 2013 Its fantasy to say the PS3 is leading by a million sales, its the opposite 360 is leading. The official figures tell the real story you'll find them online.
Wrong. PS3 already surpassed 360 by a million (more taking all those RROD dead consoles into account". "Phil Spencer is masterminding a good comeback." Wrong again. He is doing his best to sell as much consoles as possible before Sony brings the big guns and showcases what the PS4 is capable of. Then we have Morpheus on top of all that. Phil knows what's coming his way and he also knows XBone will stay in second place. And.... What's coming out on XBone in the next six months?
I am refering to performance by way of exclusive games over the last 3 or 4 years chief, not to mention the year or so of spin and lies around the XB1 announcement and release.
Are you really going to start an argument about who outsold it's competitor by about 3.5 percent last gen? You have some weird hobbies pal.
The final decisions were likely made by a board of executives based on what they wanted to achieve with the brand, or internally at MS. Phil may or may not have had some hand in the initial bad decisions, but I don't blame him for towing the company line once the decision had been made, as it's his job. Anyhow, Don Matrick probably had the most influence over this board of executives, and it's very possible that the board dictated what they wanted without anyone in XBox being able to do anything about it...although unlikely. To say that Don Matrick had the final say in what the X1 originally was is just the wrong assumption. He's a scapegoat, but likely a valid one since he probably had a lot of influence in the final decision, and likely came up with some of the ideas that went into it. That's like saying Andrew House or Jack Tretton had the final decision on what the PS4 would be, since they basically have the same job. Phil probably has more influence since taking over since the board realized the X1 was destined to fail should it not right the boat, and it's very likely that he, along with others in the company, are giving their opinions on what needs to be done to be successful. Ultimately though, Phil, or no one person, has ultimate control over the Xbox brand. In any big corporation these things are always decided by a board of executives, even at Sony. I think one issue with MS though is that they definitely have a overall company mentality that they try to keep all their products under, which can cause the DRM issues we saw at the beginning, because X1 is the now the least restrictive DRM product that MS sells.
Common sense and logic at its best! Bubble for you LoveSpuds. We need more like you.
I kind of agree. Not necessarily that he should be blamed, but I don't see why he deserves such praise. As FoxTrot said, anyone with a brain would look like a genius after Microsoft's disastrous start. He didn't really do anything amazing.
Got to understand the concept of corporate structure and chain of command. If the boss is telling everyone his vision, you have to go along with it until it falls flat and that boss is removed. Phil had to follow orders to keep his job. He probably wanted a whole new direction while xbox was touting kinect. But he had to celebrate it as well to keep his job.
After that lying sack of garbage Don Mattrickt I'm glad that Philo is the head of Xbox. Its just a shame that he has to clean up Dons mess because he doesn't deserve the negativity that the Xbox brand had. I own a PS4 and I don't plan on buying an Xbox 1 but I still value this guy as much as I value Cerny and Shuehei Yoshida I still have Greenburg though.
He's got my vote And money for whatever game he brings to Xbox one now & in the future.
lol.. same here. the guy and his entire team have done an amazing job so far.
Flipping all those switches!
Why didn't Microsoft hire Phil in the first place instead of that other guy
I totally see him as a SONY guy. Hes nice, respectful, seem like a gamer, all around great guy. And hes not bad looking. I hope he switches to SONY in the near future.
Good for him, he's the only respectable guy at MS IMO. He turned the Xbox One into a know killer console.
I wish he was my dad.
