The ultimate console war is on. Which system was better?
We have a heated debate over the PS1 and N64. Which one is better?
I say ps1. Metal gear solid was the 1st game to make me say wow
PS1 is by far the best console from the 2 ....overhyped Supermario,ZeldaOCT and TUrok 2 (the only games that worth smthing on N64) are not enoughto buy a console ...N64 some success was only because SNES procreated hype ...PS1 crushed N64 with ease that time
@gamepard Dude... you are crazy if you think those were the only games worth playing on n64. Basically it comes down to this: What sort of games did you prefer? The n64 and ps1 did different things better, not like the xbox and ps comparisons that are made today. N64 had better local multiplayer games, First Person Shooters, action adventure games, and platformers (in my opinion, Crash and Spyro don't come close to Mario and Banjo). Ps1 had amazing rpgs (n64 only had paper mario tbh), stealth games, and more survival horror games. For me, the n64 wins, but I can understand if someone feels differently. I think the systems are hard to compare though.
Tenchu Guilty Gear Bushido Blade Castlevania Symphony of the Night Resident Evil Gran Turismo Battle Arena Toshinden Armored Core Super Robot Wars Alpha Mobile Suit Gundam Char's Counterattack Final Fantasy VII Xenogears Dino Crisis Chrono Cross Crash Bandicoot Crash Team Racing Tomb Raider Megaman Legends Soul Reaver Omega Boost Bloody Roar 2 Grandia Klonoa Final Fantasy Tactics Spiderman II Megaman X4 Ridge Racer 4 Dance Dance Revolution Metal Gear Solid Twisted Metal Suikoden Monster Rancher Tekken 3 Parappa The Rapper Macross VFX Mission FRont Mission III Dragon Ball GT Final Bout Silent Hill Syphon Filter Dragon Quest VII Driver Medal of Honor Quake Tomba Star Ocean Valkyrie Profile Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit Soul Blade Wild Arms Ape Escape Lunar These games will never gain mainstream success and joy to millions of gamers around the world with out the PlayStation brand. Even a billion dollar money monster giant like M$ can not eradicate erase 20 years of PlayStation gaming culture and tradition! Never! Guys be grateful and thankful there is the Sony PlayStation brand. It has done us more gaming goodness than any other because of their dedication to gaming. Who would disagree with this. The crazy thing is you named so many games, and I can think of so many more. Really just shows how many games PlayStation really has MediEvil Oddworld Spyro the Dragon Brave Fencer Musashi Legend of Dragoon Tactics Ogre Breath of Fire 3, 4 Final Fantasy 8, 9 PlayStation is the undisputed King of Popularizing Phenomenal New Game Titles Every Generation! Most of those game titles became legitimately popular on PlayStation first before Microsoft and Nintendo cut deals with 3rd party developers and publishers cut deals to steal exclusivity and put them already popular franchises to their own platform!!! PlayStation is the real innovator. Ridge Racer Oddworld WipEout Alundra Grandia PlayStation library has no equal in history with countless hits. N64 Ocarina of Time... That multi stage final boss battle with Ganondorf!!! Pure gaming genius by Shigeru-san. Also the wow factor it had for a Zelda game transitioning from 2-D to 3-D was Nintendo's answer to Square and Sony's Final Fantasy VIII. Fantastic eras of gaming and RPGs. I miss those days when Sony, Sega and Nintendo were firing shots with one masterpiece game after another. Sega fires up Sonic for Nintendo's Mario, Sony fires up Crash Bandicoot for Sonic and Mario 64. Sony fires up Tenchu for Sega's Shinobi. Sony fires up Crash Team Racing for Mario Kart. Nowadays companies fire shots by money hatting, stealing exclusives by bribing, paying for parity, paying for what is the "in" thing of the moment, instead of making their own "better game" that maximizes the potential and power of their own hardware system. I hope those days comeback! Ocarina of Time will always be remembered as the game who stood up to Final Fantasy VII. PSX win in quality and quantity by a huge landslide victory.
Miya, that is the most retarded pile I have ever read..... You are saying, many awesome games only made it because it was on PS? Guys, be grateful says you.... Sure... Sega and Nin could have done all these games..... I am not saying PS was not incredible... It was it shook the industry, but your lust for the PS brand is a little too much....it was because of the awesomeness that was Nin and Sega that got Sony into it. Also, do not forget that many of the greatest games were born on Amiga and ST, a time when real innovation happened....
Sir would u please cite me in your works cited page ;-) I agree though there are so many good games on PS1 its ridiclous and sorta unfair lol
Coool! We are back in 90s
Not a clue why I laughed at that but I did so bubble for being funny haha. I was in both camps n64 : pokemon snap, goldeneye, banjo, conkers, super smash, Mario kart, mystical ninja, mischief makers and Mario 64 Ps1: metal gear, all the ff's, hogs of war, guilty gear, ddragonball fighting game, tomb a, Croc legend of the gobo.
Mgs 1 , Syphon Filter 1 and 2 , Crash series , Parasite Eve 1 and 2 , Vagrant Story , Chrono Cross , etc etc. Ps1 was a beast.
I really had a fantastic time with both but I liked the PS1 more due to having a much better controller and a more extensive library of games. I dont mean to offend anyone with this but its just my opinion.
N64: Mario 64, Zelda: Ocarina Of Time & Majora's Mask, Mario kart 64,Smash bros, GoldenEye 007, Banjoe Kazooie, Perfect Dark, Starfox 64, Wave Race64. Ps1: Final Fantasy 7-9, Mgs 1, Crash Team Racing, Castlevania, Resident evil series. for me it comes down to Mario 64/zelda oot vs FF7.
Plus Conkers Bad Fur Day, Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, Turok, Paper Mario, Blast Corps, F Zero PilotWings, etc. God it had a load of great games.
PS1 wins imo, FF7,FF8,MGS.
both were awesome!!
N64 obviously. It revolutionized the gaming industry. You cannot debate that without the n64 the game industry would be the same. The ps1 did not actually get analog or rumble until the N64 was released. N64 made gaming what it is today. N64 invented full 3d gaming and rumble control. Ocarina of time Mario 64 (revolutionized 3d gaming) Banjo Kazooi 007 which (revolutionized shooter multiplayer) Perfect Dark Star fox 64 Conkers bad fur day Majoras mask Mario kart 64 (revolutionized multiplayer kart racing) Jet force gemini Star wars shadow of the empire Paper Mario Mario tennis Mario golf Donkey kong 64 Mario party 1-3 etc
Full 3D gaming was on PC. And rumble. And joysticks. It was all on PC first. That's a great lineup you listed, but compare it to the PS1 lineup.
Maybe in 3d mouse control, but pc did not have full 3d analog control until the N64. Joysticks only had an 8 direction input. The n64 allowed for full 360 movement as well as tilt accutase (example being if I tilt a little Mario walks, tilt all the way he runs). Pc only allowed 3d camera movement via mouse without any sort of tilt accutase. And no, rumble was indeed done on the n64 first. Even so, disagree as you will, but people of today can remember and state the memorable games on the n64 compared to the ps. Any greatest gaming list of all time and I bet you will find many, MANY more n64 games then ps games. The most memorable game on ps was final fantasy and even that has not scored in comparison to the highest of n64 games.
NINTENDO SIXTY FOUUURRRRR!!! Such a good games line up for the time. Just wish the picture on a HDTV would still work. Mine looks awful even using the Gamecube Scart instead of the weird aerial cable the N64 has. (anyone know how to fix this actually? It's been driving me nuts ever since I tried it)
I guess I've always been a rebel. I had Dreamcast, Jaguar and 3DO. 1st Sony I bought was PS3.
it wasnt even a contest, psx
The N64 had a lot of great games, but the PS1 had significantly more. I still play both libraries a lot, but be realistic. The variety and quality of PS1's library was only rivaled by the SNES at the time.
PS1 FTW!!!!! N64FTW!!!!! Spyro VS Zelda
Wow really?! We all now what system N4G is going to pick like seriously
This is probably my favorite console generation I personally prefer PS1, its my favorite system but N64 also had some great games. Both systems were fantastic
In this case, I wouldn't put one ahead of the other. I enjoyed MGS1, FF7, Tekken 3, and GT on PS1 and on N64 I had a lot of fun with MK64, Super Mario 64, Smash, and Banjo-Kazooie. And during that era, all that mattered was games and both platforms delivered.
N64 had the better wrestling games though
Yeah I remember when WCW/NWO vs. the world first came out. Damn that game was so good at the time.
For me PS1:For variety of games N64: Mostly used for MP games Goldeneye,Winback,Perfect Dark,No Mercy etc and an occasional SP here and there Jet force Gemini,DK64 Etc.
As per usual, PS1 had the larger library, and more good games, BUT, while N64 had less total games and less total "good" games, the best games on N64 were vastly superior to anything the PS1 had to offer. Basically, just like it is today. More games and more good games on PlayStation, but the best of the best is found on Nintendo. Playstation, to me, is the console known for having 100 good games. Nintendo, to me, is the console known for having 20 excellent games. Together, all your gaming needs will be met.
Sega Saturn... So good and soooo underrated Anyway I loved all 3 systems but N64 vs PS1 I have to go with PS1, way more memories and games
PS1 ruled its gen for me. But I can't deny the fun times I had with Super Mario 64 and Mario Kart 64.
I originally wanted to say PS1 was the best due to the fact that I owned about twice as many games for it over the years. I spent hundreds of hours on each Final Fantasy game alone. Gran Turismo also consumed my life for a bit. Resident Evil got me hooked on horror games. The list of great games on PS1 is insane!! It was mostly a single player system for me though. Nintendo 64 also had its share of great games though. Sure the list is smaller but who cares. Mario 64 was an amazing entry into the series. It was different than almost anything to that point. Ocarina of Time is an instant classic and is my third favorite Zelda game of all time. Star Fox 64 was fantastic. GoldenEye and Mario Kart 64 are the titles that set it apart for me though. 007 is one of my favorite movie franchies. The game was the first shooter that I actually couldn't put down. The campaign was great. The multiplayer was amazing for its time. I remember spending hours on end playing four player split screen with my friends every weekend. The game just never got old. Mario Kart 64 was the same way. We played it for hours at a time. Some of my best gaming memories were spent between those two games. So in the end I would have to say that the Nintendo 64 is the better console by a slight margin for me. This is based on the fact that my friends and I had so many good memories with it while I mostly played PS1 by myself. Oddly enough this is probably the same reason the Xbox would beat out the PS2 for me. Halo LAN parties just couldn't be beat at the time.
N64 without a doubt.
I owned both, both great, both had their pros and cons, but for me... The N64 nailed it! From the first time seeing (and controlling, perhaps more importantly) Mario in Mario 64 - it was like the stuff of dreams. I could list perhaps more games for the PS1 which were good/great, but I could list a dozen or so games for the N64 which were bona fide masterpieces. The PS1 was great, seriously great, thing is, the N64 was a gamers system and the pinnacle.
I loved both consoles but I think it's very strange that the Sega Saturn is so forgotten. I'm a huge RPG fan and for my money, the Saturn had much better RPGs than the N64 did. Games like: Dragon Force Panzer Dragoon Saga The Legend of Oasis Shining Force III (even though we only got part 1) Shining the Holy Ark Dark Savior Albert Odyssey Magic Knight Rayearth Blazing Heroes (AKA Mystaria) Virtual Hydlide Guardian Heroes (has RPG elements) N64 had Paper Mario, Ogre Battle 64 and... I guess that's it. Even if I add the Zelda games, that's still just 4 RPGs. Saturn is way underrated, IMO.
Those WCW wrestling games in n64 tho ... And didy Kong racing.
PS1 wins hands down just with the RPG library alone
That Zelda tho...
This is no contest. Ps1 all day every day.
Makes me sick no one mentions Pokemon Stadium and Pokemon Snap.
shadowman64 i don't know if it was on pc.but it needs to be on the list imo
wow that was quite biased. Yeah Nintendo invented great things over the years and they have really good 1st party. Still they never have embraced newest technology or the 3rd party developers like Sony and MS do. Eventough Sony really hasn't ever made something that hasnt "ever been seen", but in the end it doesnt matter if the console is good and the games are good. As for Ps1 vs N64 its a tough call. Ps1 maybe didnt had so much killer 1st party games, but in 3rd party department they were best at the time. In N64 side was brilliant 1st party and the controller that everybody loved. Not even going to pronounce which was better, cause it would be too hard...i loved them both.
