IGN - Halo: The Master Chief Collection Review

The Halo series has the historic distinction of inspiring millions of gamers to spend hundreds of dollars on new consoles just to play it. The Master Chief Collection – which includes all four numbered entries in the series – is a great reminder that Halo succeeded not because of hype or flavor-of-the-month popularity, but because of timeless first-person shooter design. With excellent stories, sandbox battlefields, and great AI, everything holds up against modern shooters, many of which owe a huge debt to Halo’s inspiration. It’s all presented beautifully, with remade graphics and sound that allow old hands like me to relive the glory days through rose-tinted glasses, and new fans to appreciate the classics without having to look past decade-plus-old graphics. However, Halo’s memorable multiplayer modes are undermined by unacceptably unreliable and bug-ridden performance in the days after launch, to the point where I can’t recommend that you buy Master Chief Collection right now for that functionality. That’s heartbreaking, but on the bright side there’s still more than enough single-player and co-op content here to strongly recommend it for those alone.

Servers are shit . 9 is too high

darthv721411d ago

"Servers are shit." for now maybe but that does not mean they will be that way for the duration of the generation.

Service outages happen but they dont last forever.

Read drivclub reviews

Drivclub was torched for this very reason....halo ....a game where its MAIN DRAW is online play should be scored for it.
Psvita games like killzone and cod got drilled for its laggy online play...why not a next gen remake of halo?

JonnyBigBoss1411d ago

Hey Kingthras360, you need to educate yourself. MOST Driveclub reviews came out the day before release. Prior to release, the servers were relatively stable.

Actually you are incorrect. Most of the reviews scores for DC were based of the review copies and the online works fine during those play test and the mediocre scores were based off of lack of content, mediocre gameplay and others aspect of the game and net code and server issue wasn't part of it. Polygon, for example, assigned new scores to both DC and MCC after re-reviewing them after launch playtest for the online part.

So online function has very little to do with why most games score the way they are scores because review copies don't have the benefit of knowing how the server will hold up or what issues might occur at launch and the days that follow. What they can go by is what the game offers in content, gameplay, and fun and Halo MCC did that..thus, the 90 metacritics score is highly justify.

If everygame should be deducted based on a few days of high volume to crash servers, then we should just go back and deduct points for every game including GTAV and NBA 2k15, which have their own online issue at launch and might as well assigned embargo to after launch to every game that has online.

Kingtheash360 yea it got drilled but it did NOT effect it's score. It still got a 9 on IGN and other reviewes

Kingthrash3601411d ago

I really could post reviews and even updated reviews of them drilling DC for its online disaster. But why? y'all just deny um anyway. DC had more problems than its
L online play but their are reviews...plenty reviews that criticized DC for its online play. Smh

Bigpappy1411d ago (Edited 1411d ago )

There is clearly a mod on this site who views me very negatively. I got a trolling assessment for making the same comparison to what happened with DC.

I still have 2 bubbles, but I need to be silenced for whatever reason. Oh well, it is what it is.

bleedsoe9mm1411d ago

@Kingthrash360 most bad driveclub reviews had nothing to do with online not working , polygon was the only site i saw that went back and dropped their score from a 7.5 to a 5 over a week later .

Even though you are trolling

IGN didn't want to give the game the final score because they know it have problems and waited till it fixed which till now it didn't and that's complete BS because they never waited for any game to be fixed before
and now there is 15GB patch (WTF?!) too as i heard

this is a new low from IGN and i'm sure GS will follow

Install 15GB is far from being the same as downloading 15GB update
also why the updates this gen are soo damn big ?!

darthv721411d ago

Isnt the 15gb patch the same patch that you need to install from the get go?

You have the game data which is about 40gb and then there is a 15-20gb download that needs to install after.

Which equates to the 55-60gb overall game size they said it would be.

Ashunderfire861411d ago

I been saying this for a while now, they only give review after the patch is out lol! Been hating them since they unfairly gave Alien Isolation a bad score, when everybody else gave out 8,9 and 10s.

JonnyBigBoss1411d ago

So it should have a 6.0 Metascore because it had launch issues? How retarded.

jackwei221411d ago

Wait for Halo 5 until you can that if it lives up to expectations which it should do I hope.

No_Limit1411d ago

Another great score as expected. Finishing up playing Halo 2 Campaign again and the online matchmaking is getting better by the hours. Should be up to stuff on the network side by the end of the week.

aksmashh1411d ago

if this was a launch game, I probably would of bought a X1 instead of a ps4

josephayal1411d ago

easily one of the best first person shooters ever made
