Competition is healthy, and to see Xbox One catching up to the PS4 proves that the battle is far from over. Hopefully, this shift in tactic will encourage Sony to dish out better exclusives.
Surely it is impossible to catch up when the Xbox has not out sold PS4 yet!? There is a reduced gap in sales between the two in the US but not WW and even then the PS4 is still outselling it.
I think North America will be tight between the PS4 and Xbox.
If Microsoft bring the price back up to $399 at the end of the holidays no way they're catching up. Who in their right mind would buy a $399 Xbox with no games? Not with all the sales they had.
I'm download Dragon Age Demo right now on Xbox One, thanks EA Access! I really love my Xbox. Plus this controller is just butter!
@DarkZoolu... It's actually the full game. You have 6hrs to do what you want when you want. You can even save your progress. And when the game comes out and you chose to buy it, you can load your progress.
I get to keep my save data!? Hell yeah!
The same was said of the PS3 for a long time with regards to the 360 lead. Ultimately they sold about the same...
Playstation brand is much more knowen than xbox around the world than xbox that's why ps3 catch up to xbox360 this is different story
The PS3 outsold the 360 its first year and all but one year despite bad press and being much more expensive. The One has yet to outsell the PS4 anywhere this year. No one said the PS3 couldn't catch up except fanboys.
Put down your shields, I didn't say it would but it could catch the PS4, not likely but crazier things have happened. As for the PS3 and X1 comparison both got bad press and higher price points.
@ Dlacy I don't think they're being particularly defensive, they're just stating facts. And I have to completely agree with SoapShoes, it really was just the xbox fanboys that thought the PS3 would not catch up.
"I have to completely agree with SoapShoes, it really was just the xbox fanboys that thought the PS3 would not catch up." And how is so impossible for the X1? The X1 could potentially reach 10mill sold eventually (shipped so far) I don't go by popular opinion of what everyone else thinks here. I know half you guys think its utterly impossible to catch up to PS4 (for whatever reason) considering last gen 360 fanboys were spitting the same nonsense and look what happened. The PS continued its push with its AAA's its advertisement (Kevin Butler) Its bundles and better price and its a house hold name. Blood sweat and tears and Sony pulled it off. MS is doing the exact same thing here. Have an open mind anything can happen. But I don't expect anybody to listen or have a no open mind. Oh well I don't care to play sales numbers at the end of the day I play games. MS FINALLY realizes this gen that and making steps to deliver consumers compelling games. Not compelling Xbox/Kinect sales figures.
@angel I agree with the commenters above that the two situations are not comparable. The PS3 caught the 360 by almost continuously outselling the 360 worldwide throughout the whole of last gen. The One has not come close to equalling the worldwide sales of the PS4 at any point throughout the whole of their first year on the market. For those reasons the two situations are not comparable. The US and possibly UK should be close but the One will probably not come close to the PS4 in sales anywhere else. Is it impossible? No, nothings impossible, however, I would go as far as to say it is extraordinarily unlikely. It really was just the xbox fanboys that thought the ps3 would not overtake the 360. I don't think many people though it would take as long as it did but pretty much every level headed, knowledgable person knew it would at some point.
Just curious, but how many times will you guys try bringing up the PS3 last gen before you get it through your heads that it's not the same situation? Literally the only thing that's the same is the being behind. Oh, and costing more, though not at the same ratio, and even that doesn't really exist anymore. The XB1 isn't outselling the PS4 as the PS3 was doing to the 360; it's not winning in ANY region, let alone overall. The XB1 didn't launch a year later than the PS4, and it has weaker brand strength. They're just not the same, so please stop trying to make people think they are.
@Dlacy What? No.. The PS3 was released a YEAR later and outsold the 360 from there on out globally every single year, and over took in sales years ago. I think it would be tragic if MS hadn't outsold PS4 somewhat this month, with multiple price drops, giving away of games, and the remaster collection of their highest selling franchise. People will gloat when MS have almost been giving their product away (some good games for the holiday season granted). Also, the kid yanks will only care about US sales for some reason, when the global situation is a different story. Sony haven't had to lift a finger.
Actually the 360 had dominated the industry (excluding the Wii) until neat the end of the 7th gen when PS3 finally caught up. I don't know where you're getting your info from, but it's greatly incorrect.
@return The 360 was outsoldoing globally by the ps3 all but one year. Do you think the 10m console gap was erased in a year? That would mean in one or two years, the ps3 outsold the 360 by 5 million instead of steadily beating them by a million or two each year to catch up 3 years ago.
Typical Sony fan comment without proof
I think MS still have a lot of catching fire to do but they have Def righted the ship. @Mechanism "the kid yanks", wow did you step out of a time machine from the 1700's I guess your a "limey Brit".
In order for the Xbox One to 'catch up' to the PS4, there have to be proof of it selling more than the PS4 for a whole month. So far, that is not shown at all. Having said that, here are my two items of note. 1. XBO will likely perform better in many areas this month due to the fact that they are selling a console for about 2/3 the usual cost due to the price cut and free game(s). 2. While this is a good thing for consumers who wanted an XBO, this is far from a good thing from MS. This is desperation. This is them losing money. In order to make anything out of this, MS needs to continue to sell consoles and they need gamers to start buying all of their multiplatform titles on their console rather than any other. Side note: The fact that a lot of journalists are making this out to be a glorious thing is horrible journalism. You're ignoring how far the company has to go to get people to have any interest in their product, let alone pick it up. Somehow, it's selling better and no matter why, it's a good thing! That's just silly. The lengths MS has to go to sell their latest console to match their competition is a sad state of affairs for MS and not something their shareholders are liking at this moment.
And the 360 had a year head start. So I don't see your logic
Even with all the bundles, games, and price cuts, they are still not selling as they would expect so now they are coming up with this nonsense to try to build hype. It's Microsoft's words against weekly/monthly reported numbers. I think I know which I will believe. I wouldn't fall into this crap knowing the plans they got on hold for the gaming community. I'm pretty sure many won't forget that and it is the reason the Xbox One isn't selling no matter what they do. Their "look at the games" marketing bs won't work for me and neither will their fake "we love gamers" temporary stunt. F U MS! I'm looking at the kind of greedy company you are, what you wanted to do and what you STILL plan to do.
It won't even be a contest in Europe or Japan. Us? Who knows.
so i am supposed to believe all of a sudden the xbox sold like 2million in 3 weeks? Not buying it
Yeah, this is weird. It's even more weird that people are so willing to swallow it so easily. Then again, with MS practically giving X1's and games away, it could be true.
Even with that i am still not buying it. The logistics of moving 2 million in 3 weeks is very very impossible to happen by chance or without at least some supply constraints along the way. For this to happen microsoft would have had to overstock retailers heavily without anybody knowing. My guess is that microsoft is just doing typical pr dance. They could be around the 7 million mark maybe 8 million. Both of these numbers could arguably be considered as "Closing in on 10 million"
Catching fire as in malfunction? Because Xbox One is way behind in sells, no denying or out spinning that. Maybe good sells due to MCC but thats about it. This must be the marketing machine at work trying to boost holiday sells.
It's "sales", not "sells".
The Hindenburg caught on fire as well...
How is the Xbox One catching up when it's always being outsold? I don't understand this.
Yea that cracks me up that make no sense at all! Lol the only way to catch up is to outsell the competition and that hasn't happend yet! So if the XBOX1 is at 10 mill the PS4 should be around 16 or 17 million right??
They will sober up when this holiday ends and sony starts releasing exclusives starting with Order, they have nothing on exclusive end till late summer.
Damn the media just absolutely wants Microsoft ahead no matter how bad they lose or are losing (mind u its mainly the us)
Catching up how?!!?? -_-
1 month out of 12 Xbo is bound to sell more for that one month. That is how i guess ..
Catching up? Where? In the US? Because WW it doesn't seem so. And meanwhile the PS4 is outselling it everywhere. It has no games!! --> outsells the Xbone It has only indies!! --> outsells the Xbone I'm wondering to myself: when the bombs are out on the PS4, what is going to happen then?
Well at least youre honest that PS4 has nothing entertaining right now but mindless drones are buying it.
I'm having fun, it's entertaining... and outsells the xbone!
You should wait till playstation experience, Sony has been keeping quiet for quite a while now and we can probably expect a few new IPs and announcements.
Competition is good for us consumers. I love my PS4 that I am playing battlefield and the last of us on right now. I also love my Xbox One that I am playing Halo and Duty on right now. Both are great systems. In-fact I they are the most advanced systems ever made. Competition has made them a reality and Competition will bring us gamer's some amazing games this gen.
Seven comment above at the time of posting this, and not a single positive one. Well... I'll get the ball rolling. If there is any truth to these sales figures then congratulations are in order. Team Xbox have worked VERY hard to improve the console on all fronts and it shows. The newest releases of games have been well received and the whole platform has been focused on being better than it was yesterday. If that sort of tenacity should not be rewarded in sales then I don't know what should. Congratulations Xbox, you have really done wonders this last year and if those numbers are correct then I very happy that your efforts are being rewarded via sales.
Lol. Ignore those guys. They aint happy one bit about the increase in sales yet we are all supposed to be gamers? Its just so pathethic. I'm happy Xbox one is selling great. This will spur Phil to get the momentum going by announcing even more top AA exxclusives. Open that cheque book Nadella. Its time to open even more studios, sign exclusive deals with more devs and get more AA titles out there.
But what would that accomplish? Titan fall, sunset overdrive, fifa bundle, Madden bundle, price cut and free games. So far that hasn't translated to mind blowing sales. I don't know what else Microsoft can do at this point. $349 with 2 games, that's a hell of a deal. It just seems not to many people are interested in it.
Please note my enjoyment in you accidentally typing 'AA' instead of 'AAAA'. As far as positive? Yeah, it's a positive that more are selling. But, it's also a negative on how much they've had to cut in order to get to where they are. Competition is very much needed in this arena of ours. But, bleeding money isn't what we need in the competition. We need both of them to keep focusing on delivering the best games they can and the best features. MS is definitely taking some steps in the right direction, but they need to keep taking them and don't rely on money to get them to where they want. IMHO, of course.
You're all forgetting the people that planned on getting both but went for ps4 first they are now buying the cheap and great x1 bundles i think MS will win in the long run in the places that matter
What are the "places that matter", and why do they matter more than other places?
I'm going to go ahead and called Bollocks on Xbone with 10 million sales. Yes, technically it's "closing in"since every sale means it's inching closer, just like ps4 is closing in on 20 million, but I don't believe it's over 8 or even that far over 7 so far too soon to be talking about 10. Xbone would have to have out sold ps4 by a significant margin to have closed that gap. It hasn't. Not even once except the week it launch I believe. Someone needs to explain to these people that catching up us not the same thing as slowing the rate at which you're falling behind.
People need to give it up. No Xbox console will ever outsell a playstation console. Ever. No matter what they do. That's just the way it is and we need to move on from sales.
Well, if you were to read the most recent sales data released by both companies, you would see that in June the Xbox 360 had sold 84million consoles http://www.gamereactor.eu/n... While the ps family of PS3 ps4 and vita had sold 100 million combined in July which puts the PS3 between 81-84 million units. And the way Sony worded it makes you think the 360 is still ahead of the PS3, or they would have come strait out and stated otherwise http://www.playstationlifes... So the 360 could still be ahead
Considering Microsoft is going hard this holiday season with a price drop, bundles, MCC etc it might give a slight boost in the gap between PS4 and XB1 sales in the US market. But since playstation experience is just a few weeks away with a lot new announcements (New IPs?) I'm pretty sure they'll be a spike in PS4 sales too. TBH does anyone even know the sales between PS4 and XB1 in the US since the bundles and stuff came out?
So I'm supposed to believe they sold somewhere in the range of 2.5 to 3 million consoles in the span of two weeks, before official holiday season has even begun? Yeaaa....noooooo http://youtu.be/MtaUHMWQpiI...
I mean, is it really that hard to believe? Look at what Xbox is doing great library of games, price cut, bundles, Halo, Multi territories it's released in, great review of games. better online. To top it all off there were a lot of people waiting for a reason to get one, and if this isn't the time then when? Some people aren't satisfied with the ps4. my friend just traded his ps4 in and switched to an xboxone because he had more of a connection to the xboxone after he spent some time playing it at my house. I couldn't get this fool off my Titanfall, he also had a blast with Forza horizon, Sunset over drive, what set him over the top was Halo MCC, and the bundle. He was like a kid in a damn candy store, and he is not the only one. there were people in Sams club buying them in droves
Its not that hard to believe....if you are and xbot that is.
I'm not doubting that they are selling;clearly they're enjoying a time of great prosperity and can finally rejoice at out-selling their competition, something they haven't been able to do all year. I get that;I congratulate them, really. However, if you expect me to believe that all of sudden they have now sold-thru to consumers 10 million Xbox One consoles then just stop. Weren't the last sales ANYTHING they released was "approaching" 5 million sold-to retailers? That was what? 3-5 months back? Now obviously they've been selling consoles since that point even though they've been outsold consistently by the PS4. For the sake of argument, let's say they've sold those 5 million to retail and let's also take on another 1.5 million consoles since that point which with a little 1st grade math brings their total to a respectable 6.5 million consoles. Very good, no PlayStation 4 good, but good nonetheless. Again..I'm supposed to believe that they sold somewhere in-between 2.5 million and 3 million consoles in a 2 weeks span, despite the fact that they are still being outsold by a considerable margin worldwide and their sales and bundles haven't even reached the greatest sales day of year, Black Friday, where electronics LITERALLY fly off shelves from people buying them. Seriously...people kill each other for electronics on Black Friday.
He means 2-3 millions for US Overall it's a 2:1 ratio and a gap of about 6.5 million. Let me repeat that, in order to 'catch up', it would of had to double it's lifetime sales + whatever Sony sold this month added to that. Great library of games? Yeah, that play better on PS4, or even better on PC... which also seems to get about half of Microsoft's exclusives. So yes, whether you mean 2-3 million or the actual worldwide 6.5 million gap, yes, it's impossible to believe. It would be like waking up tomorrow and Obama actually being a democrat, like FDR or JFK, and going after Wall Street, and pushing for Glass-Steagall, and promising not to drone bomb 15 year old Colorado children, and the list goes on and on. So I'll believe Xbox One sold 2-3-6 million units in a few weeks the day Obama actually becomes a democrat for one day in his 8 years.
Unarmed is that your only logical defense, the old xbot title? So with everything MS is doing, the obvious better gaming line up for xmas, bundles, released the system in more countries, and better updates, and a much better online play system. it can't appeal to 3 million more and at a cheaper price range? So, those who were waiting to get a Xboxone can now get it cheaper, with an awesome game line up, to include halo MCC? And all you can come up with is only Xbots believe this? Look, whether you believe it/like it or not Xboxone is going into xmas with more momentum than Sony, and what you Sony Loyalist don't understand is, MS doesn't have to over take Sony to be successful, all they have to do is continue to bring the games and make the system more appealing and turn a profit.
I think.. IMO.. Xbox has the better exclusives. Halo 5 and Gears 4 will sell tons of consoles. And with MS focusing on new IPs this gen (so far) and dropping Kinnect, I think they are on the right track. With that said... I've accepted that PS4 is definitely more powerful. Maybe not by a lot... But the difference shows with some multiplats being 1080p on PS4 and not the same on XB1. So.... MS needs to maintain a price advantage alwasy for the rest of this gen. $50 difference is a good start, as long as they keep bundling a game with it.
No proof the PS4 is nearing 20 million. What we do know though is that at the end of October, which wasn't long ago, Sony announced 3.3 million units were added to bring its total shipments worldwide to 13.5 million. The idea that the PS4 will reach a quarter or more of the life times sales of the PS2 in a little over a year, by the end of this year is ridiculous. Additionally, even if Microsoft isn't number 1 at the end of this generation, if they can be a close #2 they will have won in their opinion. They can take everything they worked hard on especially on the software end, and launch a vastly more powerful Xbox Two with full BC and even deeper integration into their goal of One OS, One Microsoft, One Box. I think 2015 overall is going to be a huge year for MS. Xbox One will more than likely stay at $349, a price Sony will be unable to match due to financial constraints. There are a number of great exclusives for the Xbox One in 2015 through out the year and it is going to have another stacked Holiday season. If rumors are true, and there is no reason to believe they aren't, Gears of War Collection could be huge and then you still have Halo 5, Forza 6, Fable Legends, Scalebound, Quantum Break, and Tomb Raider. Also, we know MS is working on getting a BC solution for the Xbox One ready. If that launched that could be a very big hit with Xbox 360 users, many of which have yet to switch over. Like I said Microsoft is going to have a great run if it continues. All of its product lines are doing well or getting better. Surface Pro 3 is saling well, Band is selling well, Office sales well, Enterprize/Azure are doing well and Windows 10 is going to be a hit. Xbox is also going to continue to do well. $349 price point is a very big deal. Anyway, all this spells to gamers is that there is going to be fierce competition between Sony and Microsoft which bodes well for all of us. Game On!
The question is, is Xbox wire talking about 10 million units sold through to consumers or to retailers.
While i have no doubt over Yusuf Mehdi statements that Xbox One sales have surged over the last fortnight, this only seems natural given the price drops, bundled free games, extensive marketing and advertising campaigns and inevitable Christmas season sales surge, i do however call into question the PR sales figure of shortly 10 million units sold through to retail. If i was a betting man, i would reckon that they are currently sitting at approx 6.5 to 7 million units sold through to retail channels worldwide and they are adding on an extra approx 3 million units sales which they expect to sell through to the end of Dec 31 2014 and beyond. Let me put it more simply, for the purposes of PR spin and marketing they are adding on their expected Christmas season sales to pad out their numbers to make it seem like they are catching up. Sony announced a figure of 13.5 million units sold through to retail channels worldwide at the end of September, so if they did what i suspect Microsoft has done, they too, could add on their expected sell through Christmas season sales and add approx 3-4 million sales as well, meaning they could easily counter and announce that they are closing in on 18 million sales right now.
Xbox sold in not through. Big difference.
Catching up? WTF you see Microsoft catching up lol FOH boy these drones are everywhere lol
If M$ don't win nov then.....''The Xbox One: Catching Fire'' indeed...lol
10 millions of the 13.5m of ps4 are the install base, not the case in Xbox One there are more Xbox install base still playing in the Xbox 360
Too much logic in your comment also they didn't even ship 10 million which also far from sold to gamers they said ''shortly'' which is not saying any thing i think this early DC from MS because they know they lost Oct NPD
first good news for awhile , tripling what were good sales from the week before is something the ms team is getting excited about . shortly means he's not sure when the 10 millionth will get shipped to retailers but it could happen any time . the thing that was missed from septembers NPD's because of sony's almost record breaking sales , ms actual had a great september as well . we'll see who wins october i'm betting a virtual tie .
Xbox One catching fire? No, no; you're thinking of the red ring.
wha? catching up? bawhaa ha ha ha ha ha! man is this supposed to be like some "Jedi Mind Trick" where you make statements, positive reaffirmations that fly in the face of .....REALITY? another lol just "insane" lol ha ha piece by a so called journalist must be smoking some "wacky tabacky, am I in the in the Twilight Zone?..... smh lol please stop it..... anyone remember the "Humpty Dumpty" Song? Humpty Dumpty "Humpty Dumpty(Xb1) sat on a wall, Humpty Dumpty(Xb1) had a great fall. And all the king's horses(the integrity compromising journalist) and all the King's men(blind ___boys),couldn't put Humpty Dumpty(Xb1) back together again".... The End. That ship has sailed, the chickens have flown the coup, embrace reality it doesn't hurt that bad, do you smell what the Rock is cookin? scrambled eggs from where im sitting at lol......and XB1 IS NOT......catching the PS4, period.
