A console launch in three acts: The birth, death and rebirth of Xbox One

The video game industry's most exciting story this generation can't be found in the likes of The Last of Us, Halo 5 or the latest Call of Duty.

The most compelling narrative to arise out of this new crop of consoles isn't coming from any video game, it's the Xbox One's Miltonian fall from grace and its attempt at redemption.

The story is too old to be commented.

The Xbox One has certainly seen a massive comeback. From a device I said I would refuse to buy, even being the Xbox fan I am. From the reversals, to the brilliant 2014 lineup, and the recent price drops, it certainly is the console that it should have been

mikeslemonade1380d ago

That's just premature to call it a rebirth. Come back in month and see if the sales did meet expectations.

Gaming247allday1380d ago

i like the Xbox One, sales don't change that for me, i guess sales are nice when it justify's your console of choice to yourself, but that's not for me because i am content with the Xbox One and i feel it is the better system for me

@ mikeslemonade

You're being too rational around here...and Skeeter...they don't take kindly to your types around here...

Pogmathoin1380d ago

Common sense need not apply here.... Just post your usual doom yadda yadda yadda bs and lap up the fanboy agrees.....

user55757081380d ago

everyone's so forgive and forget here. forgive sure but don't forget

the second microsoft got some decent market share they tried to monopolize and control the gaming industry...DRM always online, no used game market

they changed their methods for survival.

right now they're doing the right thing but i fear if they control too much of the market again it would do more harm than good for gamers

I assume we are still waiting for the rebirth. I expect it could happen sometime around holiday 2015 if they have some big hitters lined up

lifeisgamesok1380d ago (Edited 1380d ago )

To me the rebirth happened the moment DRM was removed because the games are definitely already there

I wouldn't trade Sunset Overdrive, Forza Horizon 2, Killer Instinct, D4, the upcoming Halo MCC for any other lineup that is out there

The fact that you void your warranty when upgrading the HDD on the XBOXONE makes no sense. I hope this system fails.

Kiwi661380d ago

Why would anyone do that when you can just use an external hdd instead

Trekster_Gamer1380d ago

You are cluess to think you have to upgrade the HDD in the same lame way PS4 owners have to!

Drive gets full easily add a faster USB 3.0 Hard drive as it was designed for!

I am sorry but how the hell is two games a "brilliant" line up? Seriously do you guys get checks with your imaginary fanyboy glasses? Seriously its been a meager year for anything that isn't the wii u with the xbox one having the fewest releases and the lowest rated ones at that out of the three.

Your entitled to your opinion but I am not going for that fantasy land BS.

The Xbox One has been through a lot in just one year!

SuperLupe1380d ago (Edited 1380d ago )

One year later I am still amazed at how MS got absolutely everything wrong with the initial plans for the XOne

- Wrong positioning : all in one media box whatever ....
- Wrong pricing : extra hardware ok, but serioulsy you cant sell a weaker console 100$ more expensive.
- Wrong audience : TV TV TV TV, media media media reveal to a core gaming audience
- DRM, always connected etc

It astounds me how they didnt foresee the disaster that was the Xone before the 180. How can top execs be paid so much, and how can so much money be poured into focus groups, market analysis etc and they still thought they had a winning strategy in their hands ??

The XOne should have launched straight out the gate at 350$ without all the crap I mentioned above and the market share would have been 55/45 or 60/40 maximum in favor of Sony but they would have had the USA and UK on lockdown already.

All that said I'm glad they turned the ship around and I can confidently say I am 110% satisfied with my Xbox and dont see myself getting a PS4 until somewhere in 2016 and a price cut.
And that's only because they are doing a great job with Xbox right now, it's to the point I dont feel the need for any complementary console.

P.S: Cant not mention Don Mattrick who is probably the biggest responsible of the XOne reveal fiasco. Phil Spencer should have been at the head from the start.

BitbyDeath1380d ago

Not to mention they spent over 100 million on a controller that barely changed.

Funny things rich people do.

donthate1379d ago (Edited 1379d ago )

Maybe it went into making sure the product you get don't run out of battery after a few hours, and have massive defects like the analog sticks on the PS4 controller.

BitbyDeath1379d ago

FYI, it lasts for 8 hours and nothing wrong with the analog sticks unless you are referring to the pads which was only a problem with the US launch batch.

masterfox1380d ago

I think the xbone is on the dying process sadly, it has a long way to be on the rebirth part.
