Oculus Aiming For Over 1 Billion VR Users 'over the next 10 years'

VRFocus - With a $2 billion USD buyout following its immensely successful Kickstarter campaign, Oculus VR is perhaps the best equipped company to deliver virtual reality (VR) technology to the mainstream with its Oculus Rift head-mounted display (HMD). Just how quickly the company becomes successful and to what extent has been a hot topic over the past year with various figures having been thrown around. According to head of developer relations Aaron Davis, the company is aiming for over 1 billion VR users in 10 years' time.

"Oculus Aiming For Over 1 Billion VR Users 'over the next 10 years'"

That's an average of 100 million every year. LOL. Good luck with that...

Im wondering if they have something really special on their hands to make this kind of comment.

Yes lelo, it's even worse than that...that would mean 1 out of every 7 people alive buying in, and when you factor in things like age (some too young, some too old for the experience) and economic factors (such as the fact that 80 percent of the world's population survives on the equivalent of approximately 10 US dollars a day or less, with a quarter of those people surviving on around a dollar a day), a billion unique individual users is no where near realistic. When 80 percent of the globe has to attempt to provide themselves shelter, food, clothing, etc. etc. on $3,650 per year (or less)...8 out of 10 people have much more grave considerations than wondering if that new Oculus Rift is worth purchasing. Hell, about 1.5 billion people on the planet don't even have access to electricity. I don't think they could even produce one billion units of the rift, and even if they gave it away free of charge that billion figure would still be difficult to reach.

Some strange way I can almost see this happening.

Some master plan of the New World Order to put a Rift on everyone's face so they can start cataloging the population by retinal scanner.

Thus setting up all computer finance historical and billing access being done through the Rift and a retina scan.

No more passwords no more account numbers no physical money but just a Rift at the checkout line.

Evil I say eeeeeevil.

This just in.....Oculus is delusional.

AgentSmithPS41229d ago

To sell that many they'd have to team up with a shape shifting sex robot company and let you use the VR to change their appearance to whoever you want.

Them there are some lofty expectations boy! (spits in bucket through side of mouth)

In general, Im an optimistic guy. But this is a bit unrealistic... 100 million VR headsets a year... I dont see this happening. Not even a 100 million consoles are sold a year. Maybe PC's. Thing is, if this happens, what are people going to use it for? There are going to be more VR headsets than VR capable systems I presume.

nikrel1229d ago

I will not be buying or using one if possible.
I know once I use one I will disconnect from the world even more, I already disconnect when I put my headset on; I can't imagine what it would be like to put something over my eyes.

I'm not saying the tech is bad or will not be up to par i'm just simply stating; I can not use it.

Spotie1229d ago

I just get the feeling being bought out by facebook has set Oculus up to fail.

Pandamobile1229d ago

Yeah, getting seemingly unlimited financial backing is definitely a bad thing for Oculus /s
