During its earnings call for overseas investors and analysts Sony Announced that PlayStation Plus has reached 7.9 million subscribers, and that it's planning to launch in China early next year.
i have been disappointed with the free games lately, seems to have had a definite down turn across all platforms, if i hadn't paid up a year in front i would have cancelled by now as i dont play online on my ps4 at all anyway.
same here.. its hard to explain, with (£12) £4 a month and all of the games from all of the platforms and everything, its 100% worth it, but i do wish we got something a lot.. better..
This is a very good number here. And so much for PS fans saying they'll never pay for a service.
@AngelicIceDiamond You understand that the people who comment on this website represent an infinitesimal percentage of PS owners right? Also, those people who commented that they wouldn't pay for a service may not in fact be part of that 7.9 million figure. I shouldn't have to say this, but if ten people who own a PlayStation express one opinion, and ten other people who own a PlayStation express a different opinion, that is not an example of hypocrisy.
You shouldnt expect big titles during the holidays or around big releases because they dont want to keep people from purchasing new games. Its still a business after all. Personally i liked last months offerings.
It's a network service that has a bonus of free games not the other way around. Know what your paying for
it was about the games and not a network service when i signed up. i knew exactly what i was paying for, which is not the trash they keep given us, and i dont play online on my ps4 anyway. we were getting the likes of uncharted 3, ratchet and clank, sly cooper etc, now we have pix the cat.
@Mad You're comparing the games at the end of a console lifecycle with 100's of games to a system not yet a year old with less then 100 games? Think about it.
@mad Sony never promised AAA games. When we get them that is awesome. They are a business and need to make money. Frankly what they have done with ps+ has been great I have saved a fortune and more than for my money back in discounts and free games. You sound like a spoiled kid who expects the world for free.
8 million subscribers and Sony will only give us 2D side scrollers and they aren't willing to invest any money into improving PSN. anyone want to calculate how much money Sony is making from PlayStation plus ? 8 million times the cost of a years worth of subscription. @Highlife if its a network service we are paying for we are getting screwed big time. the PSN seems like its run by monkeys.
You should go read the ps plus wiki. Some developers choose to have a cut of the profits for their game being available on plus. You add up the number of games over 12 months and it's not certain just how much profit Sony actually makes. Not just about free games either, plus members get discounts on a lot of games.
when i signed up, it wasnt a network service and it was all about the games. i dont play much online so i was hoping for better games, i am not expecting top class games every month, but most of the stuff we have had across all 3 platforms recently has been trash. we had regular great games, and a decent instant game collection, which was the selling point.
I get six free games a month. Sometimes its good sometimes its not. People are little cry babies.
the PS4 has been lack luster for games that are free or sales through PS plus but the PS3 is pretty awesome, I stay on mainly for the PS3 and the hopes that once the PS4 is more established they will start offering more cool deals on it.
sorry post 2 time be accident
They'll be even nicer once they launch in China.
maybe ps4 will have a better launch line-up then what xb1 did speaking of which, havent heard much about how the xbox is doing over there. have they brought any new games? or is it just the same 10 that launched? interested to see how china is welcoming the console.
So out of this 7.9 million subscriptions when are they going to start using the profits on improving PSN - which was the given reason for charging for the service in the first place. I've had more issues with PSN since paying for it than I ever did when it was a free service! I would love to hear an official Sony rep give their justification for this.
You can't make an omelette without breaking some eggs. ;^)
When are you gonna stop being a moronic troll
So by being honest I'm now being a moronic troll. Good work, you're obviously a very smart guy ;-)
Well said, mystery, this guy's insufferable and gets away with indisputable trolling somehow. He knows, just as we all do, that Sony have made big changes to their server-side hardware and are currently working on integrating it. We don't see changes at the front end until this happens, but the financial investments have been made - now they're investing time and effort before we see the fruits of their labour.
More PSN Suscribers? more problems :( last nitgh the sheduled maintenance ended 30min later than Scheduled.
Wao! a lot of people angry! ;)
For some reason, I thought there were a LOT more PS+ subscribers then that since the PS4 has over 10 million gamers now. That's kind of low. There are more then 80 million PS3 gamers and there is only 7.9 million PS+ subscribers? Compared to the XBL, which has over 46 million XBL subscribers, that's very low. I currently subscribe to both services. At about $100 a year for both, it ain't a bad deal. http://www.forbes.com/sites... Sony needs to do more to promote PS+. They can start by fixing their network and releasing at least 1-2 FREE retail games. We got nothing, but Indies for November, which is ridiculous. They can do better then that. Especially after the DriveClub fiasco.
If you want to compare them that's fine. But don't forget to add a VERY important fact into that. the Xbox 360 made having Gold mandatory after the first year of the 360's release. So for all that time you HAD to purchase gold if you wanted to play your system online, which would be 8 years of having to pay before the ps4 and xb1 releases. They only started making that mandatory on the PS4's side where Sony's concerned. Then when you factor in both the PS4 and XB1 are being potentially bought by people that already have the ps3 and/or 360, neither brands numbers for subscriptions are going to just explode overnight for the new systems. And for the record, XBL does have 46 million users, but ONLY around 17 million of them are GOLD members. http://www.neogaf.com/forum...
I'm sure it's more then 17 million subscribers. Looks like someone made a wild guess on a public forum. Microsoft was smart for charging up front. All that extra money allowed them to create a stable network system and then purchase over 300K dedicated servers. Including HighTech Cloud servers. See for yourself. http://www.datacenterknowle... Sony decided to give online gaming for FREE to everyone and not charge them. This was great for the gamers, but bad for Sony as they were continuously losing money every year because of it. Now in their most reset financial quarter, they are posting another $1.2 billion in net loses. Their PSN network has been a complete disaster the past 3 weeks. http://www.dualshockers.com... So which company made the smart choice in the end? Not only does M$ have a more stable network, but they also have more dedicated subscribers. I think the numbers are closer to 23-24 million as I remember Microsoft saying that more then 1/2 the XBL users were subscribers.
You've had to pay for XBL since the start, as in Original Xbox back in 2002. They hit a million subscribers before Halo 2 even came out. I was one one of them, paid for over a decade. It wasn't anywhere near as stable, they openly told us the fee was to improve the network... which they did. PSN released 4 years later. So XBL did actually explode very quickly, it was always mandatory for online gaming. Sony should have charged sooner (to improve the network). I would bet by now, all this PSN is inferior to XBL talk would be non-existant. Time and time again the 'fee' has been shown to be absolutely worthwhile, man was I happy to have a closed system with no lag or modders.
Wild guess on a forum? That "Wild guess" was from the CEO of Wargaming, aka the guys that put World of Tanks out on the Xbox platform. I think it's safe say it's more than a "wild guess". And again, you're confusing subscribers with Gold members. It's not the same thing. Anyone can make a silver account and be counted as a subscriber. According to the World of Tanks boss, they only actually have 17 million GOLD members, aka paid members. There's a big difference there. In fact, that SAME Forbes link you so kindly posted even says of their 46 million that it adds in the free silver members for the total. And as for Sony's losses, stop acting like it's the gaming division that's posting those losses. Because it's not. the GAMING DIVISION is profiting. The same place you got the information about their losses has that every same info about the gaming division's profits. Last I thought, were were talking about gaming here. If you want to talk about companies AS A WHOLE you're more than welcome to do that.
@lodossrage Yes, it's a wild guess when Microsoft has already said that more then 1/2 the XBL users were Gold members back in 2013 when there were over 46 million XBL users. lol!! Like I said there are over 23 million Gold Members on XBL. You obviously didn't read all of my previous post. I'm not getting anything mixed up. I know there are millions of Silver members within the 46 million XBL userd mentioned in that Forbes article. I'm not acting like it's the gaming division losing money. The problem is the gaming division is paying the debt for all of Sony's other divisions that are losing money, hence, there won't be as much money to support the PS4. That's my point. Why do you think Sony decided to cut back on AAAE titles for the PSVita? Why do you think there were layoff at several of Sony's 1st party studios. That's not because the Gaming Division is profitting, it's because the laptop and HDTV division were failing. Why do you think Sony sold 2 HQ buildings for $1.5 billion and over $350 million is stocks as well as their SquareEnix stock? These loses will affect the PS4 whether you want to believe it or not. That is why I mentioned it. Even though Sony is working on a number of exclusives for the PS4, don't expect to see as many as what was on the PS3. This is why Sony is promoting Indie games so much to compensate for the lack of 1st party exclusives. Indie exclusive are a whole lot cheaper to come by, they full blown retail exclusives.
80 million+ PS3's SOLD. Nowhere near that number are actually still functioning. Every single person I know who bought a PS3 fat back in the day (including myself) has had to replace it after it died out of warranty.
So? That's the same with every computer electronics device known to man.
This is ps+ subs not psn. Psn is free on PS3 so everyone can use the network. On xbox it's a paid service for both so it only has 46 million so technically less people.
Ps3 doesn't require Plus for online gaming.
"PlayStation Plus Reaches 7.9 Milllion Subscribers" ... and how many have regretted that decision? I have.
Bet you came here just to write this so it makes you feel better. I've never regretted having PS+. Having PS+ whilst owning a PS3 and PS4 is beast, the back log on my PS3 is just incredible, currently tearing up with Dust on PS4. The AAA PS4 games will come, just be patient, they are a business after all.
I have Plus to playing online nothing more, and that's why I don't regret it.
trolls be like. and all the amazing games Ps+ gave us you think im gonna regret it because they haven't been on their game lately you can GTFO
Not me - PS4/PS3 - Resogun , Velocity 2X , Pix the Cat , Outlast , Dust , Trine 2 Complete , PixelJunk Shooter Ultimate , etc. - LBP Karting , Binary Domain , Remember Me , Thomas Was Alone , Brothers A Tale of Two Sons , Hotline Miami , etc. I only pay because I HAVE TO for online play , but at the same time those games are good value for my $50. I'm also building up quite the library for Vita if I should ever get one.
Y being a plus member is awesome don’t have to spend much on games when there’s discount on games.
I regret it no more than the 8 years I paid for xbox live as I pay for the same reason. Also saved £15 on driveclub when I bought it today which is basically 3 months sub anyway.
glad to hear this, sony is already doing surveys to improve PSN, all sony needs to do is improve the server stress resistance. Thats it everything else is great
Chinese new year is like our xmas. It hits on Jan 31. So it sounds like Sony will miss it. X box is going to have a strong lead by then. Combined with China's hatred of all things Japanese this will be intersting.
''So it sounds like Sony will miss it. X box is going to have a strong lead by then. Combined with China's hatred of all things Japanese this will be intersting.'' o_O....smh....I think Chinese should hate us Americans more since we owe them TRILLIONS...;)
Invest some money in the online infrastructure Sony...I wouldn't want anymore downtimes on PSN if I'm paying for a service.
not bad. almost 8 million when there are 13.5 million PS4 consoles. Xbox 360 has around 17M Gold subscribers. http://m.neogaf.com/showthr...
Plus is good for discounts on games which i like.
That's cool and all but to be honest, if i was given the option to play online for free, or pay ps plus and get monthly games and discounts i'd choose free online, especially with all the maintenance, downtime and bullshit PSN's been going through lately, but hey.
That's 400 Million. You could get decent servers for that money. Or you can pay Bills with it. I think Sony does the latter
while it might sound like a lot 400 million isn't enougth for a global network, they will be having to invest heavily into their asian servers before the china launch also.
400 million probably wouldn't even buy the buildings required to house servers of that magnitude. Sony already has the infrastructure, they just need to work on it's reliability.
Nice, the more the merrier :)
I will get it at some point, but atm it's a completely unnecessary service for me. I don't play on ps3 anymore and my ps4 is purely for single player experience. I'm also not happy about it being forced on consumers, comparing to ps3
Maybe they should have spent some of that money on servers for Driveclub.
Servers aren't the problem, it is a code issue.
Wow sony needs to get its act together it only has 8 million users and is still having problems with the online is kinda sad. Xbox has over 30 million and nowhere near the amount of problems
Damn, so much for ever seeing free to play then....I will try to not get ps plus for as long as I can...
Not surprised seeing that you have to pay for it so you can access the other half of the game u already paid for
