Sunset Overdrive is reason enough to invest in Xbox One

MMGN writes: I may not have been as glowing of Sunset Overdrive as many other reviewers have been, but don’t get me wrong: Insomniac’s Xbox One exclusive is an absolute blast! At its best, it’s probably the most fun you’re going to have on a console this year. It’s a special sort of game in that it tries harder than most to impress you, without realising that it’s impressive most when it stops mocking its own cliche-riddled plot and mission structure. I wasn’t a massive fan of the game’s in-your-face self-mockery or its sense of humour, but I can forgive that because the game is highly entertaining and a treat to play when it forgets about trying to impress you.

lol no it isnt.

no game by itself will ever be reason enough to invest in a system.
people do , on occasion buy it for just one game but that just means they have more money than sense

KiwiViper851357d ago

I know plenty of people that buy consoles for Call of Duty.

Bathyj1357d ago (Edited 1357d ago )

I dont know if you meant it, but you kind of proved the last bit of his point. ;)

MRMagoo1231357d ago

and no other game ever? So they have a console just sitting there and they only ever use it to play one COD game, not even the newer ones but just one COD? Sounds like those people you know need to see a DR.

Lol, why is there this idea that every game is suppose to save the X1, yet it doesn't need saving lesser sales than a best selling product just means exactly that, only a fool would suggest X1 won't be around for along time so there's no real cause for concern. SSO is just a great game that makes the X1 lineup even better and no game is going to make X1 sell more than ps4 if that's all you care about. No, but what matters is I see it sort of like Samsung vs Apple. I prefer Android and what it offers, many love Apple with all the iTunes stuff= which is better is a matter of preference regardless of sales.

At the same time its foolish to discount sales as 1 indicator of how good a product is or in some cases a brand has a history of strong appeal that helps but if you like something else it doesn't matter just enjoy your games= why do you need it to win any other contest besides your approval.

lol Insomniac on a pedestal, When did this happen?

I tough all the resistance where overrated and Rachet was for kids.

It's foolish to ignore sales. Maybe the X1 just fits your mold the best.

Sales is the #1 indicator. The only way X1 will have the better games now is if they keep buying the rights for exclusive content. If they shell out 30 billion for games then yea Sony will likely lose, but I don't see that happening.

The most likely scenario is X1 has a few solid exclusives every year and PS4 will have more exclusives from the great sales disparity.

I remember buying my first playstation just to play Final Fantasy VII but I knew that I would eventually buy other games for it, and I did. So I can definitely see a single game being a 'system seller'. But I couldn't buy a system just to play that one game and no others. I would definitely have plans to buy other games for it eventually.

Sadly I think it will not be the sort of game to push the Xbox One, despite the advertisement. We have plenty of open-world games (I'm not saying they're equivalent to Sunset Overdrive) and most people would rather buy the new GTAV remake or Destiny (kinda open-world) or Far Cry 4 or Assassin's Creed for their open-world fix this holiday.

ScottyHoss1357d ago

Yeah, you're right, while it is a great game it on its own is not a system seller, especially as a new IP put up against multi platform games of the same open world traits.

However, it's one of those games that makes you want it a little bit more, when I saw the advertisement for it I was stoked. Insomniac is one of my favourite developers, but I had a PS4,so all I could say day "d*** it I want this game!" just like halo MCC, and forza horizon.

Now I've got it, and it is awesome, and if it had been the other way around (XB1 first) I would still have gotten a PS4. It's not on its own a system seller but it really adds to the consoles lineup that's for sure :)

If any one game were to move consoles, I think it would definitely need to be an exclusive in the strictest sense. That means not available on any other platform at all. SSOD definitely fits that definition but, as fun as it looks to me, I don't see the majority of gamers buying the system for just this ONE game.

Many will already own the system and many new buyers will also buy other games for the system. It would definitely be a great addition to all of the other great titles available for the system but I don't see it moving many consoles all by itself.

gangsta_red1356d ago

That's how I felt with Infamous SS, with Watch_Dogs already out and the other AC game out at that time it's no wonder Infamous didn't get the attention it deserved.

But Sunset is far different as the wacky action and colorful graphics sets it apart from the other grim and dull open world games.

Christopher1357d ago

No one game is enough to buy a console.

MRMagoo1231357d ago

I can imagine a game giving you motivation to buy a console, such as gta for me but I cant imagine anyone is stupid enough to buy a console to specifically play only one game ever. I dont know If my point is super clear but I agree with you.

IQUITN4G1357d ago

That's just how you see things though. I bought original xbox on the strength of just one game Halo1 for £300, N64 primarily for SM64 and WiiU for Bayonetta 2. Purely for these games alone. While not everyone obviously would, I felt perfectly justified each time

A lot of people play a game just once be it for story say and be done with it so I can see why it would be absurd to do this, but others enjoy endlessly playing through a game built for just this. It just depends how much fun one game can provide and in the case of all the games I mention, these do fully justify the investment to me

Obviously not you

Yetter1357d ago

bought my 360 for Oblivion

mhunterjr1357d ago (Edited 1357d ago )

People keep saying this as if the console has zero other games worth playing...

Nobody every buys a console with the intentions of only ever owning one game for it... But many wait for a game to PUSH them over the edge. For me, it was TitanFall. But also own KI, Ryse, DR3, FH2, D4, several multiplats, several digital only/ indies and will soon have Sunset Overdrive and Halo MCC.

Dewitt1356d ago

There is a game that gets people to jump in, that doesn't mean they are buying it for only that game. Also, yes this game is enough to go buy another console, it seriously is that good.

whoyouwit041356d ago (Edited 1356d ago )

That's your opinion but one game is enough for most people to jump in, hell MGS4 was the only reason I got a PS3, but of course I got other games later on as well. And all the disagrees you have says you are wrong.

s8anicslayer1357d ago

I agree with that, great game!

yankolo1357d ago

Well I got mine cuze of the controller...KI...titanfall... fifa...forza horizon....

Scottyxboxoneandps41357d ago

So The last of us is not reason enough to buy a ps? I think any game can be reason enough to buy a console like zelda ocarina of time was reason enough to buy a Nintendo 64 back in the day. It's these games that can be a entry into these great consoles and once ur in enjoy everything now and in the future...

Christopher1357d ago

I disagree. A $60 game is not reason enough to pay $460 for said game.

MRMagoo1231357d ago

You dont ever buy a console with the knowledge you will only ever play one game, I think you are confusing buying a console for one game over a game making you want to buy a console.
