“Don’t play for more than an hour a day”: Japanese video game master gives great advice

Takahashi Toshiyuki, better known as Takahashi Meijin, is a renowned gaming personality in Japan. One of his famous quotes, however, says, “Don’t play more than an hour of games each day.” This sounds like a mother nagging her game-addicted child and perhaps not too convincing coming from someone who plays games for a living. You might wonder, “Why is this guy telling me that I should only play for an hour each day when he probably plays all day long? How am I going to be a world Pokémon champion if I don’t play enough?” However, it appears that there is more to Takahashi’s quote.

The full quote from Takahashi reads, “Don’t play more than an hour of games each day. Go out and play. Work and study hard. When you do better, you’ll enjoy the games more, too. You are the future of our country.”

It seems like Takahashi was not simply nagging at young people to stay away from their consoles.

I'm sure that I can't follow that advice. Not that is isn't good advice. I just don't want to.

Same here, I don't let people tell me how to live.

It is very sound advice and nothing uncommon coming from a Japanese gentleman such as himself. The Japanese (much like the Koreans) have a very fierce work ethic. They believe strongly in the idealism of working hard and working hard some more. There's this phrase in Japanese that people say when they make a toast (alcohol drinking mostly, but can apply to other beverages) that translates roughly to "You're tired!" as in "You're tired [from working hard], you deserve this drink!" This lifestyle also produces high stress levels, which in turn did lead to a higher suicide rate from disillusioned exhausted salarymen and the such.

But now I'm just rambling, lol. Sound advice, but not advice I'll be taking myself any time soon (in regards to gaming hours.)
