The Evil Within Review I Hey Poor Player

Hey Poor Player's Roundabout writes- We start off with our protagonist Sebastian Castellanos responding to a call for assistance dealing with a violent situation at a nearby mental hospital, with some other people I guess. The game sure as hell doesn’t seem to care about the other people in the car so why should I. Bad shit happens and we wake up hanging upside-down in the torture fun-house of a spooky scary leather-face wannabe. After a short scripted sequence you have a stealth sequence around this enemy with a ton of places to hide and the ability to throw bottles really far away making it a total breeze. A super scripted hallway ensues for about 10 minutes leading into a cut-scene about nothing. Let’s just stop there. The story obviously didn’t seem to matter to anyone making this at all. There was no character development; you barely learn anyone’s name. It’s just edgy visuals for the sake of being edgy.

Would you call the character development in RE4 good? Its non existent. And that was the best game ever according to a lot of publications when it came out.

As for the voice acting, i think sebastion's understated reaction to everything adds to the cheese factor. It clashes with the uber serious tone of the game but it reminds me of the old survival horror games.

The gameplay, challenge, and atmosphere are all excellent and it succeeds in making very tense scenarios. This game is the RE5 we've been waiting for but instead we're going to bash the story? The technical performance is definitely flawed, but criticizing the story is missing the point.

He never said anything about it being too hard, and remember, he,s reviewing the PC version. Almost all of his complaints are about how bad and unfinished the PC version is and how it kept crashing and giving him problems.

He never said the game was too hard. If anything he said it was too easy. Yeah, the review itself isn't that good, but it seems to me like you didn't even bother reading it, and just assumed the score given was because he found the game too difficult, which isnt even remotely true.

Our reviewer claims the game crashed on him nearly 30 times in one chapter. That's certainly unplayable in my opinion. Console gamers may not have to worry about this, but there's no excuse for the PC release to be so plagued with bugs and crashes.

Mine crashed repeatedly on pc as well, until I quit using the borders/aspect ratio fix. After that it totally stopped crashing. Really liking the game btw. Not sure what people were expecting.

Sometimes the bug/problem is not the hardware or software. The problem sits in front of the PC.

After playing for 3 hours and getting to chapter 4 I honestly have no desire to play the game at all. It isn't unplayable by any means but the story and character development is virtually non existent. I have no idea who the main character really is nor do I have any idea as to why the stuff in the game is happening. And I understand that the more you play the more gets revealed but by chapter four I should know more then nothing.

Also the game is pretty predictable. I don't think it deserves a 1/5 but it doesn't deserve 8/10 more like a 6 or solid 7.

The only thing I can't stand about this game are the black bars and how zoomed in the camera gets when you use weapons.....it gets especially annoying when the enemy is like right up in your face. The story isn't great, but it's entertaining enough for me.

Yes. The same rig that he used to review Alien: Isolation on ultra settings at 155fps. It's certainly the quality of his rig and not the game's godawful PC optimization.

I play shadows of mordor on ultra but when I play TEW It stutters and lags, and the character movement is unresponsive and the gunplay is pretty bad. Enjoy it if its working for you though...

Hmmm people these days doesn't seem to understand the purpose of this kind of games. I think TEW is a great game that brings back the joy and feel of gaming as a kid back in the 90's and early 00's :)

I agree :), it is different from the usual and brings back the old times in my mind too. Sure it's not perfect, but still very enjoyable game to me. Little a mix of RE and SH :D.

Imo people criticize games these days too easily, instead of just enjoying the game like we did back in the 90's and early 00's. Okey well I didn't read much reviews back then lol, but I feel like players have become like that. So demanding about everything.

Its a really good game. Perfect for anyone wanting a scary creepy game for Halloween. I recommend it. Don't pay attention to these shitty little sites. It's not that hard.

I really don't think it's that scary. Creep factor yes, and high marks for being disgusting. I rented it, got a few chapters in and am done with it. Gore was the big emphasis with this game. Gets old.

it sounds like this guy is mad for the game crashing so many times that he's taking it out on the game thus making all of his complaints really exaggerated. For example, "In fact your character models look inferior to games from the PS2 era as well (i.e. Silent hill 3 and Final Fantasy X) Yeaaaaaa.....no. He also says "I noticed that the game just looks bad"......seriously? I think the game looks amazing and I'm playing it on the PS4 while he's playing on the PC. The guy needs to eat a cookie and calm down. The ONLY thing I had a problem with this game was the framerate but even then that was only at the beginning, it dipped down pretty bad but since then it's been smooth.

Word! The visuals are extrordinary. That maybe one of the reasons I keep playing because the visual design is amazing. stage design with the invisible walls could be clearer by today's standards but that's forgiven, it just reeks of great ol school horror gaming. I'm also loving it though I'm still on chapter 3. Its not a triple A title so far but its great fun if you're into the genre.

On a note, my game was also super slow with frame rate dipping badly but I updated the file and it ran smoothly (PS4). Im thinking of replaying the beginning because the frame rate was so off putting. Wonder if its resolved because of the update.

Am also playing on ps4 and haven't had any issues with frame rate. Rarely the game dips below 30 fps.

I'm currently at the end of chapter 10 and all I can say is wow. This game gets better and better as you go along. The places this game takes you is just completely twisted and a compete mind fuck and I've loved every second of it.

I dont think its scary at all but its tense. It has a nice old skool feel to it too.
The cutscene graphics are really bad though - but it doesnt matter. Too many games focus too hard on story/characters etc rather than just making the game fun to play. Theyre games, not movies.

I'm playing the game on the PS4.

I find the game to be a 4 out of 5 at this time. I nearly upto chapter 6. Very first impression I was not feeling the game, but once I truly understood the game, and how the upgrades work. I than became more in touch with the game, and started to enjoy it alot more.

Its a good game and really reminds me alot of Resident Evil 4.

On the graphics side I like it. It feels like im controlling a old school horror movie. I think they did a really good job with that,

I picked it up yesterday at local Gamestop. Went in there to get Madden 15. Then i asked whats the go to game right now..they all said The Evil Within especially if i was a Resident Evil fan (which I am) and Alien Isolation. I just think a 1/5 comes across as childishness....smh

im stuck chapter 10 against that dark long haired boss with only 6 pistol bullets and i have to break all the pipes...kinda impossible

Make sure to wait until she's under the pipe when u shoot the valve because it will stun her and give u time to find the next pipe. Easier said than done though ;)

Oh and there should be some bullets laying around but u can also use other guns to break the valves too.

I am on chapter 7. Great game 9.5 to me. Very tense, great feel. This reviewer like most probably only played it for 5 min and noticed it was not cod.

LOL @ 1/5 troll score. What do you rate resident evil 6? Cause it doesn't even belong in the same genre this game does. The Evil Within is downright awesome. I absolutely love the psychological horror this game delivers. Yeah the voice acting may be cheesy and the story a little shallow but this games atmosphere And creepiness factor is just off the charts. People have Been begging for a true return to survival horror and this is it. And honestly I can get over the dialog and story because really did resident evil have an amazing story and voice acting? And in resident evil 4 Leon didn't really have much reaction to what was going on around him either but probably because it was far less terrifying. Honostly, try playing this game with headphones on and the lights off and not get scared or at least uneasy once. As for the difficulty compaints....lol. It's funny cause people praise dark souls all the time for its difficulty and is significantly harder than this game. The Evil Within is harder than ur average game but it's nowhere near unreasonably hard. My god whatever happened to games that actually tested a players skill level and not just by how long they play. Can we even call them games anymore if they pretty much hand hold the player the whole way? I love that this game doesn't give a shit and actually requires the player to make careful decisions when youre spending precious gel and how your going to approach certain enemies. The game is easily 8.5/10 to 9/10.

I bought this game and hated it. It felt too old school for me which I was surprised by. It made me realize that I'm more geared towards thrillers with action. I prefer games like Dead Space and Last of Us over this. I can't stand a game that presents the player with horrific monsters to kill but gives them hardly any ammo to accomplish that. I know it's supposed to increase the tension but for me it's just annoying. I want to kill them, not run because I have no ammo. That being said, a 1/5 is too low. Probably deserves more like a 2.5/5 - 3/5 from what I played. Also, the graphics on PS4 were bad, it looked like a PS3 game in my opinion.
