The release of The Evil Within has us thinking about the power of horror games, and how they're now even scarier than horror movies.
I've never been scared by a movie but I got scared by Fatal Frame 2 and Umineko No Naku Koro Ni
I never got scared by American horror movies, they really do suck and are piss poor compared to Asian horror movies. Back on topic, games are more immersive therefore they are scarier. The choice is yours,u have control over the character. The decisions u make aren't of someone else. Also, atmosphere and sound are key for good horror games.
I love horror movies from all over the world. There are great ones from everywhere.
Wow, you're really generalizing with that statement... Sure, a lot of American horror sucks. It's mostly just about blood and gore now, but there are some good ones.
Horror movies from the 70's-90's where the best times for horror, nowadays they all suck. But if you go back into the 70's and 80's that was the Golden Era for good horror movies, now its nothing but re-makes and lousy ones released today. There are a few good ones here and there, but nothing like back in the day.
both sucks , only a few horror games actually scares people and most of horror movies have stupid story with stupid bad guy and the only thing that make people scared is the sound effects ...
I don't know about anyone else, but Grudge, both Japanese and American version scared the sh*t out of me. In video games, Re3, silent hill 1 and Dino crisis 1. Recently, PT. Here's hoping I can add Evil Within to the list in the future.
What about silent hill 2...probs one of the most disturbing games ever?
RE1 when the dogs jumped through the windows. RE3 when you go through a door without incapacitating Nemesis during an encounter...and he follows you! P.T. when the ghost comes out of nowhere and kills me. 3 scariest moments in gaming for me. Evil Within looks awesome, but I'm not sure how I feel about unkillable enemies as a device to bring fear/tension to the gameplay. Nemesis was scary as hell, but you could fight him off.
I love the horror genre overall. I love the books, film, and video games. I disagree because both can be equally scary. There is immersion on both, but sometimes there could be a bit more immersion in video games because you are playing it. I say the more of both the better, but of course must have quality :D
I agree that both movies and games can be just as scary but in the past 5-10 years I've not really seen many trues horror films that have kept me up at night, id love to be scared pant less like the grudge and ring but jus seems like films don't cut it anymore...
Yeah I agree with you 100 % and I have felt that videos games have been the better platform or form for the horror genre since there is a [email protected] load more immersion when it comes to games compared to movies.. Plus I find that horror movies these days are either cliché , over the top, cheesy or just massive rip offs from cult classics that were released 20 years ago.
But I do love it when great horror movies come out though since im a massive fan of the genre.
Because you forgot that you are playing a game when you are tensioned :) and then baam the scare.. aaaahhhhh lol
Over the years I have become desensitised to horror in all it's forms.
The thing that gets me is when you are low on health or have no ammo and don't want something to pop out because you will lose. That scares me, but in a different way. Movies simply haven't been scary for a while now. I don't find chopping people up scary at all, who cares really. "Gore" is what Hollywood thinks of when we say horror, and it's completely wrong.
Look for more asian horror.
No, not all horror games can be scarrier than horror movies. Example like The Eye, Spiral / Uzumaki, The Exorcist, Insidious, and Ju-on can made me change my pants. But Silent Hill: Homecoming never scared me one bit.
Not one horror game has scared me yet and I played quite a lot of them.
That's because the movie industry has castrated them all by making them PG. It makes me sick, especially even when you even have PG13 zombie movies aka WWZ. Shit the Deadpool movie is even going to be PG
I don't get scared by horror movies. They can be tense and thrilling but scary, almost never. Asian horror has some exceptions though I can still watch them. I have a confession to make though. Horror games however I litterly cannot play. I need to make the steps and continue and I just can't . I just freeze, why the hell would I continue? I want to go back home! Haven't played a single horror game for more then an hour, I just can't do it.
