The following nine games somehow managed to get away with ripping off an existing idea, while their creators presumably twirled their evil moustaches and cackled maniacally all the way to the bank.
Seriously!? Gears of War ripped off Killswitch just because it had a cover system?
This is a trolling article looking for even more clicks because of the 10000000000000000+ pages.
It's "whataculture.com". I wouldn't take the article seriously... at all. They've been top tenning their way to clicks with no substance for years now.
Yes, it's as absurd as everything ripping off Gears because of a cover system since gears.
Gears is unique, Uncharted is unique. Killswitch may of done cover system first but that means nothing. Quantum Theory was indeed a blatant Gears clone.
hmmm...rip off or imitation? it has long been said that imitation is the highest form of flattery. So, to the originators goes the notion that their game was inspiration for others to imitate.
Imitation is always the highest form of flattery...Until money is involved.
Not just the cover system. Many games had a cover system. Winback was one of the first. But Killswitch did Gears before Gears and as the rest of the article illustrates, it's not who does it first, but who does it best. So yeah. The gameplay of Gears comes from Killswitch. The game is built around cover and Killswitch really got that ball rolling.
No. Not because it had a cover system. Because both games play exactly the same. Me and my buddy had Killswitch and loved it. It was new, original, and nothing had really been done like it before. Not to that extent. When Gears of War came out, we were both like, "Wow, this is a lot like Killswitch." Say what you want, but Killswitch was the pioneer, while Gears gets all the credit.
The person who developed the cover system for Killswitch assisted in the development of Gears of war.
Look at it like this: If you had played Killswitch, then played Gears of War, there is no way in hell that you, or anyone else, would ever be convinced that Cliffy B and company came up with the idea of Gears of War all by their lonesome. The art design, story, universe, graphics, superb gameplay? Sure. That was all them. But the game genre, gameplay, and mechanics all came from Killswitch. Everything from jumping/dashing/sliding between cover, popping up and firing then ducking down to reload, blind firing, blind grenade tosses, and needing to be aware of what cover you shoose because some will chip away under enemy fire. All of that was Killswitch. There's no way around that.
"(consoles that die young are to gamers what trouble artists that kill themselves are to regular folk)" ...so the DC was our James Dean?
Would I call these games rip off? No, the mechanics are heavily inspired but you can't say rip off. Especially the Kart racing games, the mechanics just work, how else could you do it and make it easy for anyone to pick up and play? I mean if we are going to get that technical than every genre game thus far has ripped off a game from it's past genre of the same.
Thats the thing. Remember when Halo 4 came out and everyone started calling it Call of Halo, because it took on the whole Weapon Kit structure in its online mode? People were very upset, yet they act like Call of Duty pioneered all that. The funny thing is Battlefield had been doing the Kits for years before CoD, and Counterstrike was doing it before even Battlefield. Whats even funnier is that Call of Duty was actually inspired a lot by Halo. The single button grenade throw, squad play, etc. All games take inspiration from other games. Unless something is truly the original, then no one can really claim that ANY game is totally new and original.
I was coming in here to say pretty much the same thing. If one karting game comes out how is another one supposed to? Same with football, baseball, arcade racer... Basic mechanics to play such a game are always going to be the same. We can't have rapidly changing formulas for every game coming out. Even if we did, we would have been around the world and back by now with all the possibilities. Anyway +1
rip off or imitation as a form of flattery or the desire to improve on already seen idea...whatever the case may be, it is important for developers to further a genre if they see more potential.
this website sucks dont click on it. do yourself a favor and pick up a game and play it instead than reading this "article" crap.
Crash Team Racing still holds up all these years, and is still better than any Mario Kart or Kart Racing game to date.
Lol, no. Mario Kart craps all over Crash, especially the new one. Haha, you're quite the joker :p
Only someone who sucks at games would say that. Its okay, Mario Kart caters to the lowest common denominator so I wouldnt expect you to understand.
Only just saw this. Lol, you really think Crash Racing was some hardcore racing game that didn't cater to casuals? You really are quite delusional. No one cares about Crash Racing, barely anyone cares about Crash. And you couldn't beat me on either, so whatever. Crash, well, he crashed and burned, it wasn't that great, otherwise we'd have had more. Instead the superior game carried on taking center stage because it was a better game, for novices and pros alike. Keep on trucking, and carry on believing you're some kind of expert on the matter. It's hilarious to have people like you around ;)
