Is 2014 The Year of Disappointing Games?

JoshOnTech: It’s a sad truth: some games simply aren’t very good. They’re always present no matter what year it is, but some years are much much worse than others. This year, so far, seems to be one of the worst years for video games in recent memory. Nearly every major release this year has failed to live up to its hype, starting with Thief (PS4, XBO, PC), then with Watch_Dogs (PS4, PS3, 360, XBO, PC), and now finally we come to Destiny (PS3, PS4, 360, XBO). Every one of these games failed to meet expectations, and are often considered mediocre.

"seems to be one of the worst years for video games in recent memory".

Well, that's you. I certainly haven't found any game of my dislike this year.

Agreed. I've been enjoying nothing but good games this year.

The Last of Us: Remastered
InFamous: Second Son
Velocity 2X
Transistor
Metro: Redux
Wolfenstein
Destiny

Still to come:

LittleBigPlanet 3
Guilty Gear Xrd
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor
Driveclub
The Evil Within
Shadow Warrior
Alien: Isolation
Far Cry 4
AC: Unity
Project Cars
The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth

Destiny is great too and will evolve with the community.

If you buy a bad game you should expect a bad experience. This generation's 1st generation titles are far more impressive than last gen's.

I played a ton of great games this year.

Destiny + Titanfall + Watchdogs =\= Every game released this year.

AC2020x1361d ago

Agreed! Sounds like someone hasn't played Ground Zeroes!

* Depends on how you look at it. People discovered older games this year, and so they have a different outlook because to them, this year might of had a ton of good games.

* I personally think it's been a solid year.

I've played a ton of good games this year, but not all of them were released this year.

* Currently playing the heck out of Disgaea 4 Vita and loving it, but maybe this author doesn't like games like that.

* Does he also not know that Smash Brothers releases this year ?

if you don't think its the worst year in gaming then your easily pleased. i went with low expectations and i was still disappointed in the rubbish Watchdogs and Destiny then the rest of the games are just remastered PS3 games not saying remasters are bad but there have been sparse releases like one big game release on every two months. it seems this gaming drought was planned to starve gamers into buying mediocre games as its either that or they gather dust. gaming has hit an all time low. hopefully 2015 is a better year.

Metallox1360d ago

"easily pleased." No, sorry.

Destiny and Watch_Dogs turned out to be good games. They just didn't meet everyone's expectations, my own included. I'm curious, do you guys think these games were over hyped by the developers or by the gamers? Who is to blame for the crazy hype? I think it's a bit of both.

imXify1361d ago

People put their expectations waaay too high.

I agree. Naturally a company is going to promote their product to no end. As the consumers, us gamers need to be aware of that and not set ourselves up for disappointment. All the blame certainly can't be put on the developer alone.

Ares84HU1361d ago

Games are ALWAYS overhyped by the gaming media. They are the ones who keep talking about certain games and raise our hype level as well.

Having said that, I think both Destiny and Watch Dogs are good games and I personally really enjoy them. Especially Destiny. I just can't put that game down. There is a ton of room for improvement there and every time I play I keep saying, "well this should have been done this way or that way so it would be better" but at the same time I can't stop playing. Like a love hate relationship. The game has HUGE potential. I hope they fix everything they messed up or missed in the first one.

My 2 cents.

Kevlar0091361d ago

People expected high scoring games, games that pushed the boundaries of the medium. Not a whole lot of generation defining games atm, games we all hold up to a high regard.

jts18911361d ago

Which is sad. Frankly, I really don't care if a game redefines a genre or pushes the medium forward. It's nice when it actually happens, but a good game is still a good even if it's not revolutionary. Lately, it seems like that has changed. Nowadays, if a game doesn't reinvent the wheel, it's called mediocre. Meanwhile, an average hack n' slash game like Shadow of Mordor gets +9 scores because it brings something new and shiny.

TheWackyMan1361d ago

2012 in my opinion is still one of the worst years for gaming in recent memory.

76erz241361d ago

Agreed. The two best games of 2012 were the two space epics. Halo 4 and Mass Effect 3 were easily my favorites that year.

TheWackyMan1361d ago

Halo 4 and Mass Effect 3 are both considered the worst out of their respective series.

jts18911361d ago

Depends. If you mean the multiplayer, sure. But if you played Halo for the campaign, Halo 4 was one of the best.

ME3 was terrible though.

Deep-throat1361d ago

Agreed.

That year was full of mediocre sequels.

ginsunuva1361d ago

Gaming's last local-maximum point was probably 2009-2011 (before that was 2007 & 1998). I can say with confidence that it's all downhill from there

francisjairam161361d ago

In my opinion yes, because this year has been really mediocre. We've been having a lot of delays and remakes. Plus some of the games like Titanfall, Watch Dogs, and Destiny were disappointing to most people because it didn't deliver what they were promised and this so called "Next Gen" feel. I have no idea what is going on.

Battlefieldlover1361d ago (Edited 1361d ago )

I think you're reaching with "most". Maybe "most critics" but then a quicj search shows that isn't correct either. I agree with "most" here that people expectations were high and the games were pretty good.

edit.

Ya i totally get that. I wish people would have just enjoyed the games instead of looking for game of the new gen. Every game that you mentioned have thier issues beleive me... have um. But, man, they have filled so much of my time i really cant justify to myself being dissapointed. I have never bought so many games in such a short period of time it is freaking crazy.

francisjairam161361d ago

I do get what you're saying, people were hyping up games like crazy and all of them just said it was not too great. Yeah you're right they expected too much I agree. What I was trying to say is that most people felt like the games that came on the PS4 and Xbox One didn't have the new experience that they were hoping for.

jts18911361d ago

Thing is, Destiny was never 'next gen'. It was always cross gen. It's been swirling around in Bungie's head since at least 2009. When the game was originally revealed, the next gen consoles hadn't even been announced yet.

Battlefieldlover1360d ago (Edited 1360d ago )

Exactly my point, why did so many people have to look for star citizen on console instead of boarderlands in space (so true lol)?.

Games were pretty ok or even above average sincle launch.

Xof1360d ago

Yeah, it's a pretty bad year for the shiny new consoles. Nintendo's platforms are doing fairly well, though, and PC and PS3 have had absolutely stellar years--and it ain't over yet. Some of the biggest PC games of the year have yet to even land--Pillars of Eternity and Civilization: Beyond Earth.
