Soren Johnson is one of the best game developers you've never heard of. As the lead designer of Sid Meier's Civilization IV, Johnson successfully reprogrammed, redesigned, and re-imagined key elements of the classic PC strategy franchise, making a good case for getting his own name affixed to the title as well. After finishing Civ 4, Johnson, anxious for a new challenge, contacted Will Wright, expressing interest in working on Spore, and Wright welcomed him aboard.
The addition of Johnson to the Spore team was greeted positively in PC gaming circles, reassuring gamers that the long-delayed project would now get a significant boost in talent. We recently sat down with Johnson to pick his brain about Spore, Civ, PC gaming, and everything in between.
