Destiny - Where it all went wrong

MWEB GameZone writes: "Destiny is a game that was burdened and then broken by its own hype. Many declared it to be a game changer. Game of the century. Possible contender for the title of Greatest of All Time.

It’s been roughly two weeks since the most pre-ordered video game IP in history was launched and the feelings around the game are vastly different. Where did it all go wrong?"

Expectations. That's all.

Yep - PlayStation guys saying "Bungie on PS4, 10/10, suck it Xbox users!" was this games downfall. Anyone with extensive Halo experience could tell this game was not Halo or a Halo clone with the first gameplay video. Halo gamers could tell early on this wasn't anywhere near a Halo caliber game. Xbox gamers could tell this game at best was around an 8/10 experience. Being current in Bungie news also let us know that a ton of Bungie's team helped form 343i. It wasn't a single person changing studios, it was a big split between talent, and the best of the best kept with making Halo games.

Destiny is by no means a bad game, it is better than a lot of the stuff out there.

It isn't Halo, and won't ever be. If you could measure hype between user bases, you would see it all came from the PlayStation crowd. Xbox gamers came into it with an open mind and excited for Bungie's next game - when we saw footage it was like "ughhh really?" while PS users saw it as "OMG GotY! Did you see that?!?!!? Bungie on PS4!!!!" As an avid Halo/Bungie fan, if Destiny decided to become a PS exclusive, that would be fine with me. 343i is the new Bungie, that is where all the talent lies - and they were able to make the best looking game of the 360/PS3 generation on their second game, impressive.

Absolute garbage, the lot of it.

DragoonsScaleLegends1547d ago

I'm a PlayStation fan and I was never excited about it, only interested after I played the beta. But I'm not going to get it since everyone is saying it's not that great and overrated. Same as Halo overrated.

Halo 4 the best looking game of last gen? This is the first time I've heard such absolute crap. You seem to be missing your brain, you know that thing that's suppose to be inside your skull "@XBLSkull".

plut0nash1547d ago

IMO they were too ambitious. Bungie achieved much but it felt like the same thing over and over. The Second Coming didn't pitch - that's what happened.

Eddie201011547d ago

I like destiny but most of your statement is retarded garbage.

Everyone says it's just expectations. It's just not a very good game. Simple as that. Any game where you're expected to replay the same missions over and over and over and over in order to level up in order to play the REAL game as Bungie likes to call it is just badly designed. That's why people have opted to sit for hours firing at a spawn cave instead. Genius....

Eddie201011547d ago

There is 16 to 20 hours of game play without grinding to level up. It's an FPS MMO hibrid.

Many RPG's and MMO's you have to repeat(grind) parts of the game to level up to get past the next section of the game, always has bean a part of those type of games. That said many of those games are considered great games.

IMO Dark Souls had the best single-multi player campaign around. You could play by yourself or go online and have random encounters that could easily sway against you if you were not cautious. That's what should've been done.

Sillicur1547d ago

Agreed, Dark Souls for the win!

GabeSA1547d ago

I will give it an opportunity to be fixed and wont just write it off. I think this has huge potential and yes there are definitely areas I would like fixed but I have also found areas where I want fixes, others found to be perfect and vice versa. Will wait and see if it has true longevity as one would expect from a legitimate MMO.

MrPink20131547d ago (Edited 1547d ago )

Yes it does have huge potential. Problem is reaching that potential will take time and money. Both of which many consumers don't have ample supply of.

I think the biggest issue to me is the game is centered around the idea of this big expansive universe with lots of people to play with. Trouble is Bungie is holding that back with upcoming DLC, expansion packs and limiting the social aspect of the game with its limited voice communication and low player count.

lord zaid1547d ago

Despite its flaws, I still like this game.
I have fun with it and I don't think I'm the only one.

You completely missed the point here...
