We've actually been talking about this over on Smash Boards, and this is the conclusion that the hard workers there have come up with:

The effect only affects knock-back, not actual damage dealt.

So if you're thinking that this is a lesser form of Lucario's Aura ability, it's not quite to that level.

Basically, don't depend on it, people. It's a nice effect to keep in mind, but in the end it's likely not going to be a game-changer or something that outrageously tips the scales in someone's favor, because it's always riskier to get high enough in damage for this effect to make any noticeable difference in the first place.

No lie I was sharpening my pitchfork until I read your sound comment so helpful bubbles those forum posts helped even more. But funny thing I wouldve still bought the game I love me some smash bros but that tripping mechanic from back then has me a little shellshocked.

XD Yeah, that's why Sakurai removed tripping from Smash 3DS and Smash U.
It's gone and it's never coming back, don't worry.^_-
