Sessler's Soapbox: Once Upon A Solid Snake...

"In this week's Sessler's Soapbox, Adam talks about the only game really worth talking about this week, Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. The Sess discusses his long held belief that videogames couldn't be as effective at storytelling as the movies, and how MGS 4 has proven him wrong."

The story is too old to be commented.

It's not just about long cutscenes... it's the fact that they're awesome... and they blend perfectly with the game...

Some people fail to see that if it wasn't for the story this game wouldn't had been as great.

If you know what you're fighting for it makes it so much better and worth it.

Some reviewers imo were just so eager to just finish the game and put up a review that they didn't sit down and flavor the game.. instead they were just waiting for it to finish it..

Bottom line.. 98% of gamers absolutely loved the game, including the amazing cutscenes, and THAT my friends is what REALLY matters..

Those who complaint about the cutscenes are either never played the games or just plain shallow.

@beoulve

haven't played for a few days. Just started Act 3.

But come on shallow? I have a hobby of film script writing plus I'm a reasonably experienced GAMER - can clearly identify the good and bad of both.

But the cut scenes are too long. The game should have been structured to ONLY include short cut scenes and those scenes obviously written to take account of this - to get the story through to the player. Allow the game to flow from cut scenes to gameplay throughout. It can be done if you are a good enough writer/director.

The long preloads before each chapter, I'm guessing, was likely due to the lengthy Cut Scenes.

nicely done Adam

best part is when adam admitted that kojima owned him actually Kojima owned millions of people including me no one was expecting this game to be this good I mean no one. There was no way anyone can predict this amount of enjoyment with mgs4 you can go into it hating everything about metal gear then come out of it loving the series and asking for more. Hideo Kojima has really accomplished something here...

No really. It did. And everyone knows it. HAHHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHA

who went on a criticizing rampage over watching MGS2 more than actually playing it. My how his views have changed.

well the cutscenes are a little better these days. There arent 20 minute codec sessions (they were stale and boring to me). Now everything is visual and the visuals are beautiful.

Sorry if I come across as long-winded, but I've just gotta get this off my chest:

I just finally finished MGS2 late the other night, and admittedly, as much as I loved the game, the cutscenes WERE often a bit much, and sometimes overly melodramatic for my taste.

My God, how I would've given anything for a Pause feature...the hard part was trying to get my wife to understand - on a myriad of occasions - "hold on, baby...lemme just get through this important cutscene, and then I'll come help feed one of the screaming, starving babies right away...Yeah, I KNOW that I said so an hour ago, but I can't pause it, and this game is all about the cutscenes, you know!"

Didn't jive too well, to say the least.

She was like, "I don't get it, every time I walk into the room, you're never playing and just staring at two green heads exchanging dialogue..."

But you know what the WORST part was? There were two occasions where she actually hung around the room for a good half-hour to carry out some chores, and was both times subject to a never-ending melodramatic Emmy-award winning soap-opera performance between Raiden and Rose...

She finally couldn't contain herself and burst out laughing, and starting humming the tune to the cheesy Italian evening soap opera my grandmother and all the other old ladies are obsessed with.

"What the HELLLL are you playing???"

"But babe, no!...it's not like that...this is just a small part!...it's really about stealth, and nukes, and DNA, and a tough guy named Snake...and..."

You know, I always prided myself in possessing a certain confidence and manhood which negated the need to resort to the likes of Viagra.

Until now.

(Now, will someone in here please hold me?)
