Sony promises to fix PS3's 720p issues

It looks like PS3 owners will be getting their resolution issues patched up. Sony's now working on a way to resolve the 720p downscaling that occurs in some older high-definition television (HDTV) sets. Of course, if you don't own an HDTV, HDMI cables, and a PS3, then you've got absolutely nothing to worry about.

The story is too old to be commented.

THis should have never happened. How could Sony not have this worked out. I would hate to see what would have happened if they launced in spring. The first update should have fixed this.

Dude, chill. A few early HDTV models didn't adhere to industry rules, and somehow that's Sony's fault? It's required that an HDTV support (at minimum) 720p and 1080i, and the ones having problems only support 1080i. Just be glad that Sony's being kind enough to help the minority of consumers who had some bad luck. =]

Do you have a link for HDTV standards? Not questioning you or anything... just want to read. Thanks...

I have a right to voice what I think. The scaler should have been there. Why wait for a patch. The PS3's HD res will not upscale. This is pi$$ poor. And of course if Sony sold you a PS3 case for $600 you would say just be happy. Plain and simple PS3 at it's current state is useless to me. I have 1080p, 1080i, 720p ans 480p support, but I need the scaler. My main gaming TV is 1080i/480p. I will not game if it's not HD. Now since some one sayed 360. The 360 can scale xbox games. The PS3 can't even scale PS2 games. So much for 10x power. RSX=poop.

I just read a couple of forums and it seems some Sony TVs also doesn't support 720p. Looks like early Sony tubes. So by Sony blaming the tv manufacturers, they're actually blaming themselves?

They should have taken 1080i into consideration long before now. I seriously doubt very many people who spent thousands for a 1080i tv in the last few years are prepared to buy a 720p or 1080p television now just so they can play a PS3 in 720p mode. Yet another nail in the PS3 coffin.

that requires an actual chip to accomplish?

I wouldn't hold my breath for a usable patch. At least, not for games. I don't know if they can get past this.

Still, it's not a serious issue in the long run. Modern HDTVs/monitors are still fine.

Just more fanboy flames.

360 fans. Even when its great news for sony, they find something negative. This issue can be fixed by a patch, how many freakin times has MS come up with a patch to fix issues. You 360 fans are just so stupid. Please, enjoy your crappy games and move on. We are PS3 fans for life.
PLAY B3YOND.

Trying to figure out if Sony can make a patch for this considering the PS3 doesn't have a dedicated hardware scaler. Using the Cell/RSX to handle the scaling for movies should work, but wouldn't for games.
