Digital Foundry: Hands-on with the Forza Horizon 2 demo

Eurogamer :

"As platform comparisons go, Forza Horizon 2 vs DriveClub promises to be one of the most exciting console clashes of this year's holiday season. There's certainly much in common between the two titles, with each boasting similarly advanced rendering features, tight online integration, and native 1080p visuals operating at a locked 30fps. But where Playground Games' Xbox sequel hopes to differentiate itself is in its focus on delivering a rich and unrestrained open world where players are free to explore and tackle challenges as they see fit. How well that would actually work wasn't clear until the release of the Forza Horizon 2 demo earlier this week - our first chance to get uninterrupted hands-on time with the game."

Amazing work by playground games. Great IQ, Solid framrate.

Now if only Turn 10 would implement dynamic time of day and weather into Forza Motorsport.

They're always eager to mention how Forza Horizon and Forza Motorsport use the same engine, so I'd hope that when Forza 6 rolls around we finally see weather and night racing integrated. Besides Turn 10 have it easy, Playground Games has gone and done all the work for them!

Rarely do I see the difference, I agree I prefer real-time, but if the tricks trick me then good. That's the devs job to free up resources for things I do notice.

I agree they should implement the great work Playground has done with dynamic day/night cycles and weather.

I do disagree that Turn10 have it easy though, the simulation aspect of Horizon 2 doesn't hold a candle to FM5. Horizon is not even close to the uber realistic handling of FM5.

I'm glad they've expanded the franchise, Horizon can do all the awesome cool fun stuff and FM can stick to intricate small details where it excels. Honestly I'd have no problem doing without 3D crowds, night, rain etc.. if they used the resources to push the physics eeven further.

All that said I still think Horizon is the better game overall, Playground Games have cemented themselves as top quality developers IMO.

"Now if only Turn 10 would implement dynamic time of day and weather into Forza Motorsport."

Considering they use the same technology I would expect everything to be in Forza 6.

"Besides Turn 10 have it easy, Playground Games has gone and done all the work for them!"

Horizon 2 uses downsampled car models from Forza 5, so it's not like Playground did all the work themselves, and Turn 10 co-developed Horizon 2, so once again no.

But do you reckon if they add dynamic weather and everything to FM6, they'll be able to hit 60fps? Doesn't make a difference with FH2, since it's an arcade racer, but FM6 would be a sim for which 60fps would be essential. Perhaps when DX12 hits, they might just be able to have all that and still hit 60. Guess we'll just have to wait and see.

@radler

lol, you simply don't know what you're talking about

FM5 was a launch game and it was awesome even without those extra features, Turn10's focus was to make a stellar sim for fans at launch and they nailed that and then some, sure we always want every feature and the kitchen sink but at launch the nature of the beast is time constraints so it was a careful balance of just getting a really great racing game at launch or delaying to add everything and the kitchen sink. Hell many non-launch games and some not even out until early 2015 are missing obvious co-op features that would naturally fit in those games so for me that's a bigger ommission. Either way FM5 excelled at what it does best, racing fans of the game and reviews all suggest Turn10 did a helluva job; while others games were delayed which btw contrary to the myth truthfully it doesn't always guarantee success or much better game anyway.

Playground benefited from using Turn10's newly built FM5 game engine, Turn10 is also co-developing the game WITH Playground by collaborating and sharing key personnel on development, same as the original Forza Horizon, lol thats probably why its a spinoff that shares the Forza name. Uhm so Turn10 hasn't had anything "easy" and whatever they learn from FH2 for FM6 is through co-development between the teams not as you imply that they had it handed to them.

-As for this preview it seems they looked hard for negatives but ultimately they came away with the same feeling I got from the demo:

"Further inspection of the demo shows that Forza Horizon 2 delivers its visual punch with a crisp native 1080p resolution, as promised by the developers earlier in the year. The anti-aliasing solution is also given a boost over that of Forza 5 via the use of 4x MSAA (multi-sampling anti-aliasing) - a bandwidth-heavy choice that we rarely see in use on console. Coverage is decent, with less shimmering on distant objects compared to Forza 5."

"Impressively, despite the demanding open-world set-up and an avalanche of advanced rendering effects, Forza Horizon 2 holds a solid 30fps throughout the demo without ever dropping a single frame during gameplay, no matter how carelessly we ploughed through the scenery and collided with other vehicles - driving feels smooth and responsive in a variety of weather and road conditions."

"The only tangible distractions come from the shakiness of the camera when you drive across country fields as your car's suspension attempts to counteract the resulting turbulence. The judder here is intentional of course, adding a considerable amount of intensity to off-road racing at high speed - it's part and parcel of having an authentic racing experience where the environment actually impacts upon your driving."

"In the limited demo environment we've only seen a snapshot of what Forza Horizon 2 has to offer, but our first impressions are highly positive."

I loved the demo, so much, I ordered the $99 Ultimate sku

Some Sony fans were saying the game was dropping frames, the other day. I guess thats been debunked.

The anti-aliasing solution is also given a boost over that of Forza 5 via the use of 4x MSAA (multi-sampling anti-aliasing) - a bandwidth-heavy choice that we rarely see in use on console. Running at 1080p too can we finally stop saying the x box 1 is weak?

Said by who?

Anyway, IQ is great, framerate stable, despite lack of AF and quality of foliage is so-so.
