FBI called in to investigate death threats against Sarkeesian

GameDynamo - By now, you've probably heard of Anita Sarkeesian, and her Kickstarted series, "Tropes Vs. Women In Video Games." Personally, I'm not a fan of it - I feel Sarkeesian does both herself and the industry a disservice with her research - though she makes a number of extremely intelligent points, they're undermined by what feels like incomplete evidence.

"though she makes a number of extremely intelligent points"

She really doesn't

Antia Sarkeesia - Fake Feminist Con Artist

Christina Hoff Sommers - True Feminist

xX-StolenSoul-Xx1158d ago (Edited 1158d ago )

She's been getting so much bad press. She should just unlink herself from video gaming as she gives girl gamers a bad name. It's been shown time and time again that she's not even a gamer. My wife plays games, my sisters do, many of my lady friends do and they never complain about half the crap she does.
She's in it for the money, not feminism

Anita Sarkeesians 'death threats' and Joss Whedons 'misogyny'!

I have an idea... Let's stop giving Anita all this effing attention!!!

Lord_Sloth1158d ago (Edited 1158d ago )

Have to agree. Sarkeesia's just an attention-seeker (since attention-whore will be construed as sexist here even though it's actually apt) with a computer and delusions of grandeur. She wants her 15 minutes of fame which will hopefully burn out soon so the next sexism screamer can step up to the plate because people online call her bad words (as if none of us get threatened with rape, mother rape, and murder when playing online).

aerisbueller1157d ago (Edited 1157d ago )

It'd be a cool Shamaylanesque twist if in the last entry to her Video Game Tropes Against Women series she presented herself as the exemplification of the damsel in distress trope.

BattleTorn1157d ago (Edited 1157d ago )

I just re-watched some of her videos, namely because I like to expose myself to any viewpoints before I proceed to criticize them.

What struck me was this (and the moment is @23:10, https://www.youtube.com/wat... )

The point she was making was about how many games have little to no consequences for killing sexualized women.

But, then it dawned on me - games don't have much consequences for killing anyone, and why would a sexualized woman be any different?

This was about when I realized her agenda is back by nitpicking examples, EXACTLY what Christina Hoff Sommers said about her.

Aleithian1157d ago

Exactly. Cherry-picking examples is prevalent in the new feminist movement.

A mundane example: Complaints regarding the physical appearance of women in games. NOT their clothing or sexualized appearance, but their body composition. Examples of, for instance, slim figures and large breasts. But this is cherry-picking - men in video games are tall, buff, and attractive. There's just as much 'bias' in favor of attractive, healthy males in games as there is of attractive, healthy women.

Feminist retort: But the standards of attractiveness and health attached to these characters are chosen by men.

To which I retort: No, they are chosen by men (mostly) *as a product of evolution.* Slimmer women with larger breasts indicate both health and reproductive potential. These evolutionary standards are natural and objectives norms of health and attractiveness. (And the same can be said of standards of male health and attractiveness.)

And moreover, standards of female beauty in gaming are FAR AND AWAY better than such standards in Hollywood, one of the centers of modern feminism.

(Disclaimer: By 'slim' I don't mean a stick, per the Hollywood standard. Anyone who plays games knows that women are not portrayed as sticks in games. To take a prominent example, the Dead or Alive girls, with large breasts and equally large infamy, are all physically fit, athletic girls. They are 'slim' from that standpoint.)

" I feel Sarkeesian does both herself and the industry a disservice with her research - though she makes a number of extremely intelligent points, they're undermined by what feels like incomplete evidence.

With that in mind, what she's saying still needs to be heard - and I know she can say it better than she already has.

There. See? That's how you criticize someone you don't agree with. Know how you don't do it? Death threats."

.. What the h3ll did I just read? How is that an critique for something you don't agree with?.. Let me try to make it through the rest of the article because the author just contradicted his self twice in the first paragraph, and I'm not sure if I have the will to finish..

Just finished reading it.Pointless article just reiterate what Polygon said.
I don't understand the jump to conclusions by Polygon. The officer gave no date to when the report was filed, yet polygon believes it was on the date she said she filled a report.Stuff like that shows that they are clearly taking sides on the matter.Any level minded person/ news site would've thought that could be a possibility, along with the possibility that after people started to inquire on what happened she made a quick report to the police, or even that it had something to do with the supposed bomb threat months ago.
But nah.. lets just assume it was the death threats that the police said they would handle themselves and not the FBI, and the only time to get the FBI involved would be if a terrorist threat have been made... like a bomb threat at a convention.

Wow this article was approved then unapproved because it was " old " " not gaming related" and "Lame"
http://n4g.com/news/1589343...

Yet this article is still up.. I was hoping that N4G retained a bit of integrity in all of this but with this and fake users making incredibly offensive comments with additional fake users agreeing with said comment to make the users of this site look like they agreed with the death threats.
http://n4g.com/user/comment...
It seems like after that publication they are targeting this site.. lets see how long it takes for this site to start seeing bans..

You get a bubble just for having Overblood as your avatar.

Roccetarius1158d ago

What a waste of their time to investigate this, when it's easily available that she faked it.

Gh05t1158d ago

If she faked it than wouldn't you want this investigated as that would break a few laws of its own... That would be great irony to be busted for faking your own hate (Happens a lot more than one might think).

SilentNegotiator1157d ago (Edited 1157d ago )

I wouldn't be surprised if these threats were the next "conservative bitch" ( http://www.campusreform.org... - shocker, I couldn't find a mainstream news source ) scandal.

ziggurcat1158d ago (Edited 1158d ago )

1. she really has made no intelligent points
2. i wonder how long it's going to take for the FBI to realize they were faked threats.

Dan_scruggs1158d ago (Edited 1158d ago )

1. You think that there hasn't been a single death threat levied against her. I mean come on. You have been on the internet before today? Right?

2. Why would she voluntarily open an investigation on the death threats if she knew they were made up? Thus opening herself to criminal charges.

Totally fake

ziggurcat1158d ago (Edited 1158d ago )

1. the threats in question were faked.

2. because she's an attention-seeker, and thinks she's going to get away with it.

you just cited kotaku... one of the worst offenders in the whole gamergate thing... their "reporting" is not going to be very accurate when they've already set out to defend her tooth, and nail regardless of her unethical behaviour.

GundalfDeGrej1158d ago

I'll be the devils avocado and say that making "fake" threats is still illegal. Tons of people have watched her videos and one of those people COULD be crazy enough to actually do something to harm her. I think it's perfectly understandable that she might be a bit on edge right about now.

josephayal1158d ago

She´s a very smart person

ScottyHoss1157d ago

Jose I hope you're being sarcastic man..

Eamon1158d ago

Why is she and everyone taking the threats seriously.

Death threats are normal on the internet because 100% of the time, these threats are trolling and never carried out.

Dee_911157d ago

Supposedly they had her address. If you're a public figure you should take all death threats seriously.
