Destiny PS4 Gets Near the Top but Super Smash Bros. Is King on Major Japanese Retailer’s Sales Chart

Like every week, the major Japanese retailer Tsutaya published its chart to give you a glimpse on what games achieved the best sales in Japan last week. This time around the chart is interesting as it sees the release of two massively anticipated games: Super Smash Bros. for 3DS and Destiny.

SSB beat Destiny on PS4 and PS3 and every other game on every other system.

Japan has never been that big on FPS games (especially in the Western vein) so I am actually surprised Destiny did so well. Winning 2nd and 3rd place. SSB was always expected to be number one when it released in Japan no matter what the competition was except for maybe Monster Hunter which was the only game to have more preorders according to COMG rankings.

Also surprising is that Destiny on PS4 outsold the PS3 version as the preorder charts had predicted that the PS3 would win.

Abriael3504d ago (Edited 3504d ago )

I'm not excessively surprised. Bungie's name carries some weight in Japan, and Destiny is heavily influenced by Anime (like most of Bungie's games), so it had the potential to click with the Japanese audience.

I honestly would feel zero surprise if Destiny got its own Anime series in the future.

Eonjay3504d ago

I would actually like to see that. A decent anime series would help flesh out the story.

Baka-akaB3504d ago (Edited 3504d ago )

It's say it's actually a big big surprise . While known , those big western FPS or TPS games usually get just a nod and fleeting presence in the top .

Not at all 2nd and 3rd spot , and not at all outselling even an exhausted and overmilked naruto game franchise .

sinncross3504d ago

pre-order charts for a small retailer in one area of Japan has PS3 version outpacing PS4.

The situation looks to be entirely different at Tsutaya (in the article), which is a completely different retailer to the pre-order numbers we can get from Japan.

Magicite3504d ago

if not for Japan, Nintendo would be on its way to become bankrupt..

thehobbyist3503d ago

Keep telling yourself that.

Gamer19823503d ago

One WiiU game and not a single Xbox game.. MS cant get that creak over there and Nintendo having mega success only with the 3DS

I'm glad to hear both games are doing well in Japan, but I'm really getting tired of all these console-war-inspired gloating articles...

MasterCornholio3504d ago (Edited 3504d ago )

I always enjoy it when a western game does well in Japan.

:)

Its a great feeling to see Japanese people enjoy the same games that I do.

P.S I love Japanese games FYI.

P.S.S I dont mean this in a racist way either. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the Japanese. So much that I buy Japanese products like Sake which I love.

truechainz3504d ago

I second that Sake motion. Love it!

Sheed3503d ago (Edited 3503d ago )

idk man, smash bros 3ds vs Destiny would be a very close call in the west.
Smash bros is a behemoth

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter326d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood326d ago (Edited 326d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro325d ago (Edited 325d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881325d ago (Edited 325d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell325d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig325d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast325d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername325d ago (Edited 325d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g325d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka325d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

I've been thinking about playing through D1 again before it goes away...

CobraKai476d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface475d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

spoonard473d ago

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
