Gamecritics Review: Metal Gear Solid 4

GamesCritics writes: "After about thirty years of being a mass medium, videogames have a few auteurs-people whose individual mark can be seen on a final product in spite of being created by a multi-person team. Undoubtedly, the big daddy of them all is Shigeru Miyamoto, who practically single-handedly saved the modern gaming industry from its downward swirl in the E.T.-laden toilet of the early 1980s. Some game makers insist that their moniker be in the title of the game, most recently Richard Garriott's Tabula Rasa. Others, like Castlevania's Koji Igarashi, can make one or two masterpieces, but then fall from grace, struggling to recapture their one spark of genius. Metal Gear's Hideo Kojima is definitely an auteur, one whose fame and notoriety continue to rise the longer he continues to work."

He is a gaming god and has created this generations masterpiece. MGS4 is what makes me glad to be a gamer. I know there are plenty of titles out there that make this hobby fun but to be honest, none of them have put the grin on my face that MGS4 has. Thanks Hideo.

I just finished the Game last night and even though I have had almost no prior experience with MGS this game is without a doubt one of the very best I have ever played. ............

For someone who does not know the story I occasionally got lost during some of the early cut scenes . But by the end I was a total believer ..........This Game really got under my skin reducing me to tears on more than one occasion . ( RARE )

So ..........I have no Choice I will now Play MGS 1, 2 and 3 and then repeat 4 again .

David Stone says straight out........, it is a game for the Long time Fans and not for the masses . So I look forward to this entire experience.

ill let you in on a little secret. 'I occasionally got lost during some of the early cut scenes' that even happens to people who have played the others. This game should come with some type of game revision warning. Catch up on your MGS history before embarking on this epic exam.

I agree coompletely with the reviewer when he says "what could have been a game for the masses is an inside story or joke".

Not that I would want Kojima to compromise his vision, but this game isn't going to move the massive numbers they want because the plot is so insular...Yes, some people who just genuinely love good games will dig it but that number is going to be REALLY small.

As good of a game director Kojima is, I hope he never makes a film...I doubt his ego could handle the editing process...Which this guy sorely needs...He tends to repeat points again and again for dramatic effect and it's not neccessary...He has good stories to tell and is often brilliant at telling them, but he is a bit too self-indulgent at times....Which, as fans, we expect, accept, and some even love. Most non-fans will undoubtedly be turned off.

Well he certainly indulged himself to plenty of Naomi cleavage shots, and as a fan I certainly approve.

But yeah most of those cutscenes are shall we say, of the foreign film variety. They just drag on forever for no reason other than to worthship his beautifully rendered characters, which is the only reason they're tolerated.

I think Kojima's opinion for this game was that if you never played any of the previous series, there was no point trying to impart his vision to you as it wouldn't make any sense. The joke is the mass audience will be completely befuddled no matter how he tried anyway and sound like Star Trek/Wars universe gibberish. Why try so hard to be serious if expounding info is going to put-off newcomers?

What is so complicated about the story? I mean yeah there are too many characters and its hard to keep track of all the snake clones, but really its not that complicated. Anybody who pays attention should be able to understand everything that happens in MGS4.

I just checked the score over at Metacritics.com and noticed that they put a score of 8/10 for GameCritics MGS4 review. I'd also checked the review on GameCritics.com and similar to N4G.com, there was no score given. So I'm curious to wonder if Metacritics.com are actually putting up false and misleading review to lower the score of certain games.
