PS3 Beating Up Xbox 360 In Japan

The console royal rumble gets underway in Japan. While the PS3 came out throwing punches (which were later resold on Yahoo! Auctions), the Xbox 360 didn't even quite make it into the ring. Here's the embarrassing sales figures during PS3 launch week.

PLAYSTATION 3: 81,639 units
Xbox 360: 3,864 units

The PS3 get's beating in the rest of the world. First off they can't deliver. Second, it lacks content big time. Third of, the competition has better and more exclusives. The competition has the better copies of a multiformat game (COD3, Tony Hawk, RR6/7 you name them)

Actual sales show that the 360 sold almost 7,5 mln, the PS3 sold just 270k and the Wii sold 600k.

Now with Gears of War in place for this christmas, together with Viva Piniata for the parents that shop for their childeren, 360's produced enough to be on the shelve, no PS3 to be seen due to shortages... Millions of customers searching for a next gen present...

What you'd expect? Right. Forget the strange Japanese stuff. That market is declining any way. 360 is all around in new upcoming markets like Korea and India. Where PS3 only launched in USA and Japan.

I wouldn't get too excited just yet. The 360 sold 60,000 units in Japan two days after launch. So technically, the PS3 isn't doing much better than the 360 did at launch.

Everyone spouts out about market share this market share that. Then when figures of Japan come out suddenly the tune is 'So I don't care about Japan I'm American' Guess what Japan is part of the market share... That's right you need to sell well there to in order to win market shares. Doesn't matter if you sell well only in the US becuase yes we can only buy so many. Japan is a large number of people who love video games and can make any market share go way up for any company. So if your saying so what I don't care about Japan my console of choice will win without Japan. Think a little more about it.

Japan is part of the market as of late a very small part. Japanese market is hurting lol their starting to dev for westeners in mind because of that fact.

Japan as a market share for consoles has dropped off. Europe is twice the size and N. America is over 4 times the size. I agree that ignoring Japan is not smart for business, but Japan is no longer integral for gaining the wordwide lead in market share for consoles.

If a company were to have a significant lead in both Europe and N. America, it would be enough for the overall lead. Also, don't forget about markets like Australia, Korea, etc. These smaller markets could add up.

Point is, while important, it's not necessary for the 360 to take over Japan or even gain huge ground (and it won't happen anyway). In addition, just because a console company has the most market share of Japan, doesn't guarantee it the most market share in the world (although it does help). Besides, I think Nintendo is going to regain the lead in Japan. Sony is losing favor there, just as they are every where else in the world.

I am sure I could show you the exact same numbers when the original Xbox launched vs the PS2. There is ALWAYS an initial demand for a launch console. So the article doesn't prove a whole lot.

That being said, we know the 360 isn't selling well in Japan. And we know it isn't difficult for the PS3 to out perform the 360 in Japan.

But what happens next week when ZERO PS3's are sold because they are not available, and 5 Xbox 360's are sold. HOLY COW. Xbox 360 will suddenly outperform the PS3. WHO CARES?! Play the damn games. Don't lobby for a console.

Sony Launched with 100k in Japan and sold over 80% within the first few days off it's launch... wow.. i remeber last year that the launch of the 360 in japan was like you could litterally walk in and pick one up... IGN said that in some store in japan was 25 within the hour... yeah 360s are selling but not like hot cakes, whats funnier is that the original xbox did better than the 360 when it launch in japan. well i'm sure lost odessy and Blue Dragon will sell them off the shelve though so MS hasn't got much to worry about... still for sony thats awesome... and a sell out of it's systems in the US, keeping in mind that they are still aiming for a million units shiped not sold. i factor about 700k-850k sold by years end. ^^ being realistic... plenty of games will be availible to drive PS3s off shelves come christmas and ristance will help that fly... ^^ what a year it's been already... Is irrelevant to what happens in other markets. We can't even play the same games they do because of region coding, so on that point alone, the Japanese, North American and European market machines should be considered distinctly separate. Now that they will be able to flash the roms in the consoles. they will likely be able to disable mod chips and enforce their region coding. Maybe they (Sony) will even go so far as to install a root kit on all PS3's that will stop unapproved mods or unlicensed software from working. They have the ability to do it, as they have demonstrated with their failed music CD copy protection scheme.

As for the numbers, well duh!! Of course a new console is going to outsell one that has been on the market for a year during launch week. The big test is going to be if Sony can crank out units fast enough to keep up with MS and Nintendo before this generation of machines becomes obsolete.
