Why gamers hate on the Wii

Sarcasticgamer.com writes, "During my usual internet click through for the latest and greatest information on gaming, I ran across the latest NPD numbers… GTA IV this, PS3 that, yadda, yadda, yadda. Then, I noticed the top ten Wii games sold last month. As I perused the list, one gigantic sore thumb stuck out at me: Boom Blox in only 9th place? Even worse than that, were the games that sold more units than Boom Blox, a game that I believe is one of the best, if not THE best reason to own a Wii.

Checkout the top ten and more ridiculousness..."

When has Boom Blox been considered a hardcore game that gamers want? Is it because it isn't selling well? Is it fun yes is it casual heck yes is it like Carnival Games and Wii Play in a sense yes. So why be mad that Boom Blox isn't selling? I'd be mad if Dead Space was a Wii exclusive and it didn't sell but this is Boom Blox not that big of deal really.

Wildarmsjecht3780d ago (Edited 3780d ago )

I left my 2 button controller scheme alone back when NES was still around. The fact that the controller is waveable doesn't do it for me.

Thats not to say there aren't some fun games on the wii. I enjoy some of the party games but that's about it. And when it comes down to it, I don't want to have to wait for 3 more people just to have fun with my console.

Edit::

I should also mention, that titles like ZnW, and NMH are the exception, but there needs to be more.

Voiceofreason3780d ago

2 buttons control scheme? Never played a Wii have you? The Wii remote itself has more than 2 buttons and thats not even attaching the Nunchuk. People might take you kids a little more seriously if you actually acted like you knew what you were talking about.

Wildarmsjecht3780d ago

Yes I know of the B button, the A button, and the 1 and 2. Holding the controller horizontally however, makes most use of the 1 and 2. I know what Im talking about, so try not to act too pompous would ya?

MikeGdaGod3780d ago (Edited 3780d ago )

the Wii is for kids and grandparents. if i get the urge to wave my arms around while playing a game i could:

A - play High Velocity (which is WAY better than Wii bowling imo)

or

B - set myself on fire and play MGS4

flexbox3603779d ago

shame on u for saying wii has 2 buttons. u hurt my feelings. my gamecube 2.0...umm i mean wii is the best. wait until conduit comes out and ull see the real power of the wii. ps3 and 360 watch ur backs

Games like Zack and stuff don't tells on Wii no matter how good they are

Wildarmsjecht3780d ago

I think if they brought Zack and Wiki along with No More Heroes to the ps3/360, it'd be another story. those kinds of gamers will look at the game, see how it plays, look at previews and reviews intently, and purchase it in storm. The sales trend of REALLY good wii games that are not first party indicates a lack of interest/research on games that don't have Wii in the title or Mario/Zelda/Metroid. Shame really.

PS360WII3780d ago

Zack and Wiki wouldn't sell well on any system. The art style alone turned off way to many gamers plus no one anywhere knew what Zack & Wiki was all about.

Wildarmsjecht3780d ago

I disagree, but I can see your point.

However, art style alone can sway alot of people to purchase. Some people get tired of seeing the same color scheme for the same genre of gaming. To see a bright and unique (in a sense) form of art is always refreshing and can help boost sales. Not to mention, if they did advertise it like they should have, along with the scores it recieved, it would have been a much better seller than what it was. That was my point.

ChickeyCantor3780d ago (Edited 3780d ago )

@wildarms

You sure you wanna use the " color scheme" argument? because it seems PS2 games were dark/grey(lets say the textures didnt hold much colour XD) textured as hell, most FPS games of to day are all Darktextured...RPGS try to look alike..seriously ....same Color scheme?! if that is the reason Most games you people call -hardcore- would have failed miserable

Wildarmsjecht3780d ago

You're missing my point completely. Most games nowaday, aren't brightly colored or for that mattered at least alittle bright. Some use different techniques to help bring out better lighting and it works. But aside from Zack and Wiki and a select few others, there's not really that much to go on. Yea, alot of PS2 games had dark textures, but at the same time games like Klonoa and Katamari were a direct opposite and welcome change. Those games were cult hits and a good change of pace that is well needed this gen.

ChickeyCantor3780d ago

" But aside from Zack and Wiki and a select few others, there's not really that much to go on"
But this is not a reason to shun it. Gamers play GAMES not GFX.
Zack and Wiki is a good game, yet its being ignored. I know Art is important but who says art can only be found in how its rendered?

And did Zack and Wiki didnt bring change?! Gameplaywise?....

Gamers will wine about anything thats on the Nintendo its just sad.

Wildarmsjecht3780d ago

My reply about art was originally to the PS360wii who said the color scheme turned people away from the game. I thought differently. Graphics aren't the only important thing to me, otherwise I wouldn't go back to play ps1 titles when I find the time. Im a CG artist, so art does hold alittle bit more importance, but gameplay is what keeps me going. thats why I think Zack and Wiki and no more heroes are fantastic games taht didn't get the love it deserved. Not only because of their cool new art styles (which were awesome in my eyes) but because of what they offered in terms of gameplay, and story. I never once stated that graphics were the only thing important. Games like carnival games and wii play turn me off because it feels like more of the same and the need for more than 1 person for maximum fun is needed. Hope that clears things up abit.

TruthbeTold3780d ago

...would be completely different games had they not been on Wii, so there really is no use trying to imagine "how much better" they might have done on the PS3 or Xbox 360. The problem with NMH was that
1: Initially only internet-mongers such as ourselves knew anything about it.
2. It's such an artistically stylized game that you pretty much have to play it in order for it to appeal to you if you weren't impressed by clips or screen-shots.
3. Nintendo's staggered release policy doesn't seem to help 3rd party games at all, only hurt them really.

As for Z&W, again, only those who actually seek out good games via the internet, or through conversation with other gamers/game store employees knew about it, or knew that it was worth buying. That, and initially it was very hard to find in some places. Also, considering how few it sold, I'd have to wager that alot of the gamers who talked about how great the game is haven't actually bought it.

In my opinion, the Wii has enough absolutely great games now that anyone who has money for two consoles and considers themselves a true gamer should own one, and help make sure that we "hardcore" have a greater hand in steering the future regarding what types of games are important.

Finally I'll say this: Wii play only sells because it comes with a Wii-mote. It's garbage imo. I think that Nintendo's initial strategy of drawing in people with Wii Sports is great, but after that hit and miss is the most I can give it. Games like Boom Blox should have the option of coming with a Wii-mote in order to influence new gamers more with quality games. But if they did that, Nintendo might actually have to take a small loss, or not make a profit on one of their products for a while. Oh no! As we all see, Nintendo's choices are greatly influencing those of Sony and MS, and will also greatly influence their choices regarding the next generation of consoles. I think it's time for people to stop hating, and start influencing the future more with the power of their wallet. Wii games are only 50 bucks anyway, and many of them are first class fun. I own No More Heroes, Zack and Wiki, and Boom Blox. And yet, I can plainly see that it is our fault (as a whole) that these games aren't doing better.

Tron3780d ago

A scene of accomplishment. When I play games like Drakes or MGS, I have to work at it. I cant turn them on and be great at it right away. While in MGS i have to try areas over and over until i get it right and when i do, i feel like i have accomplished something (at least in the gaming world). I never get that with the wii.

Kholinar3780d ago

I agree with most all you've said. I just want to add a bit and chime in.

"In my opinion, the Wii has enough absolutely great games now that anyone who has money for two consoles and considers themselves a true gamer should own one, and help make sure that we "hardcore" have a greater hand in steering the future regarding what types of games are important."

This is something I don't think people are talking about much. The hardcore have a huge voice just by reason of their dollars. But, by abandoning the Wii, they created a situation where casuals have a greater voice, instead of staying and buying things like NMH and Z&W.

"Finally I'll say this: Wii play only sells because it comes with a Wii-mote. It's garbage imo. I don't think it was bad as a $20 game with a $30 wiimote. There are a few games in there that friends, family and I have had a blast with.

I agree that jumping back into the wii would be the best way to influence things, but I think people are scared that a Wii sale equals casual to Sony/MS and will continue to even if game sales types change. I can't completely disagree, because MS/Sony are definitely going to make a move and publishers will push for casual... just because it's been underdeveloped before. That's the problem with corporations, they don't change direction easily... which makes them hard to influence within the attention span of most consumers. We'd rather do a "don't buy gas" day than carpool or conserve.

"I don't think it was bad as a $20 game with a $30 wiimote. There are a few games in there that friends, family and I have had a blast with."

You're right. The game isn't completely valueless. Sorry for the overly harsh statement. I guess what I really feel is that for the most part it is low quality. And since it is in a position to do so well with being sold with a Wiimote, Nintendo is using it as Wii Sports' back up. They are setting the direction of most of their consumers this way, which is fine... But if they used a more quality game such as Boom Blox, these casual gamers would have to adjust into a little more of a "hardcore" form in order to beat it. They'd have to use their brains and skills as a gamer in such a way that would likely leave them looking to their next game as something more along the lines of Zack & Wiki rather than Wii Play, you know?

"I agree that jumping back into the wii would be the best way to influence things, but I think people are scared that a Wii sale equals casual to Sony/MS and will continue to even if game sales types change. I hear you. But the Wii is kicking butt anyway. If more of the "hardcore" bought into the Wii, and into it's "hardcore" games then in the end it won't matter if someone thinks that a Wii sale in 2008 = Casual. There would end up being a much more preferable balance once it's all said and done.

"We'd rather do a "don't buy gas" day than carpool or conserve."

Ain't that the truth... It's catching up with us though, so we're going to have to adjust.

when will he ever learn? 90% of wii owners(5-10 year olds) cant afford games. thats why they only get as a gift 1,2 games a year and there always nintendo titles.

Voiceofreason3780d ago

For someone that visits gaming sites you are pretty clueless. Wii has a the second highest attach rate and half the million sellers on Wii are 3rd party. If you really think the Wii is doing that bad you must be pissed about the PS3, because the Wii is kicking its ass in every way.

Gun_Senshi3780d ago

Attach rate of games like Transformers and Iron Man.

Voiceofreason3780d ago

Yeah nice of you to pull up Iron man.. I guess you didnt know that crap fest of a game sold better on PS3 and 360 then Wii? It made the top 5 in PS3, 360. Only to the top 10 on Wii. Who buys more crap games again?

George Washington3780d ago (Edited 3780d ago )

no thanks but i have better games than wiiplay and carnival games.

wii is for children and i dont really get why theres still nintendo fanboys like yourself. even despite that fact that you get slapped in the face by nintendo themselves by calling you a "nerd and otaku"

@ below

ya im shure halo and ff have been waterd down for a E rating eh.. you know. youll never see a R rated first party nintendo game. why? obviously because nintendo is made for children. you gotta be stupid if you havent seen it yet. just look at the gamecube disks. they made the cds smaller just so it can fit into a kids hand... theres a time to face the facts and stop playing with kids toys you know. I had NES,Snes and n64. after those they stoped caring about me so i stoped caring about them.

ChickeyCantor3780d ago

" wii is for children and i dont really get why theres stil nintendo fanboys lke yourself. "

Same reason why you STILL love FF or Halo or whatever that game is you fap on.

ChickeyCantor3780d ago (Edited 3780d ago )

" they made the cds smaller just so it can fit into a kids hand"

LOL, mister troll, the disc were Smaller so Copying and piracy would be difficult. XD you are lame really.

MR.Troll, i give you the conspiracy award

" ya i'm shure halo and ff have been waterd down for a E rating eh"
Where did i say this?
you asked how there are still N-fanboys around, I said the Same reason you still love your games ;).

"theres a time to face the facts and stop playing with kids toys you know"
I will define what a KIDS TOY is, not you. If one were to enjoy something let him/her enjoy it. Since when did your name change into hitler?

George Washington: "I'm butthurt that I bought an Xbox 360, and yet bought all of the games that are on the 360 for PC. The few exclusives I do have aren't fun at all. I see those Wii-owners having fun with their consoles. Maybe it'll make me feel better about my purchase if I troll them and trash the Wii. Yeah, I'll do that!"

George Washington3780d ago (Edited 3780d ago )

well whatever then. you wana go ahead and play pokemon or w.e then go right ahead. i used to like that when it was popular back in gameboy pocket times.
hey, im just saying. when your picking up a game at a store and see 8 year olds picking up the same game id feel wierd. i dont see whats so great about zelda/ metroid and all that anyways. most all wii first party games use some crappy tech. no voice , all text,no online(or laggy),gamecube graphics. i dont see whats great about it. why do i want to play zelda when i have oblivion? why play metroid when i have bioshock? why play wii sports when i have gears lol. havent you noticed? its the same games but targeted to diffrent audiences. you cant say those games are better running on last gen hardware. you just havent noticed it yet.

@smacktard

LOL another wii fanboy. yea have fun playing on your reskinned gamecube. same outdated graphics and game selection , new controler. and again why does it matter 360 games are also on pc? do i have a 1000$ pc to run them? no go back to playing your waterd down mario kart which is WAAY worse than the gamecube AND ds version. you should know your a N fanboy. course you wont accept it though.

Smacktard3780d ago

Haha, enjoy your MATURE GAMES FOR MATURE PEOPLE LIKE YOU. The irony is over-whelming, considering that most 8 year-olds seem to have more common sense and maturity than you. Metroid Prime 3 has voice acting. It actually adds to the game. But there are some games that would just not be proper with voice. Can you imagine a Mario game with voice? Ugh, I don't wanna. But if you're content with playing the same shootan games for the rest of your life, I won't stop you!

I actually didn't buy Mario Kart Wii, nor do I plan on it. Good on you for making baseless "LOL NO U" assumptions though. As for the lack of $1000 to get a good gaming PC, I offer two suggestions:

1) Get a job
2) Realize that pretty much any modern non-specifically-gaming PC nowadays can run any Xbox 360 game to look just as good as the 360 version. Hurf durf.

Oh, sorry. You probably couldn't hear all of that with your fingers in your ears. This was kinda pointless, eh?

Nintendo is becoming synonymous with casual and kid's games. It's making them tons of money so they won't change anytime soon.

Not a casual gamer or a little kid? Get one or more of: 360\PS3\PC, problem solved. That's what I did and those Wii sales charts don't bother me.

Kholinar3780d ago

"That's what I did and those Wii sales charts don't bother me."

I don't agree with everything that you posted but it's nice to see someone who's gaming identity is not somehow threatened by games/systems they don't like... :p

RealityCheck3780d ago

@5.1, I don't dislike the Wii, it just doesn't have a lot of games for me at this point. I enjoyed Zelda, the RE4 remake and the Okami remake but all 3 of those were available on the Gamecube or PS2. I enjoy long single player game with an interesting story.

Xiru3780d ago

You are correct. Get a PS3/360 and don't worry about sales numbers. Nintendo is cleaning up and I don't see that changing anytime soon. Its just very frustrating when I talk with my friends and they constantly tell me "PS3 sucks", or "Wii is owning everyone". They are right when they state that Wii is owning, but is it owning for the right reasons? Good games, new graphics, epic stories, and amazing new gameplay? And there is nothing I can say to change their viewpoint. To me, this is truly a generation where you need either a PS3/Wii or 360/Wii. I personally have all 3 because I want all the great games that come out this generation.

RealityCheck3780d ago

@Xiru, same here, I own all 3 because of exclusives but most of my gaming time is spent on 360 and PS3 and it may remain this way until the next Zelda I guess.
