UN, Microsoft initiative give old PCs new life in Uganda

Ars Technica reports: The promotion of economic development in Africa faces two significant challenges. It needs to establish local providers of goods and services in order to foster broad-based economic growth, instead of an import/export-dominated economy. Ideally, it also has to promote sustainable industries, so that the new businesses are less susceptible to the spiraling costs of raw materials. Last week, Microsoft and the United Nations Industrial Development Organization announced the formation of a business that meets both of these criteria: a computer recycling and service company, set to open shop in Uganda.
