ArsTechnica reviews the PS3

Sony wants to push new formats; we want to play great games and have a good time doing it. We want every bit of that experience, from the menus to the loading times, to help us get into that fantasy world and keep us there. Sadly, with all the new technology, Sony appears to have neglected the overall gaming experience.

Overall, I am impressed with the system's potential. The graphics power is there and once developers have had the time to tap into it, things should change a bit. In fact, I think we'll see great things from the second generation of games from the PS3. Combine that with a few software upgrades, better HD scaling, and a major overhaul of the online system and you can go ahead and add two points to the current score, three if Sony really delivers with the udpates. The hardware is solid, and the games are only going to get better, but the software implementation leaves a lot to be desired; the score reflects the PlayStation 3 as it exists now.

The Good:
- The hardware looks great, and runs nearly silently and very cool
- Wireless controller is light and feels great
- Great-looking Blu-ray movie playback
- Price is low for a Bluy-ray player
- A lot of multimedia options
- Solid backwards compatibility

The Bad:
- Terrible online store
- Slow, unintuitive browser
- No background downloading
- Games continue to play even if you eject the disc; you have to manually restart the UI via the controller
- Messy UI
- HD scaler doesn't work right
- Price is high for a video game console
- No rumble, controller loses sync with system sometimes; little game support for motion-sensing features
- Uninspired launch lineup

The Ugly:
- Knowing that no one is actually playing this thing, every system is waiting in a box somewhere for the eBay profit

so why do people buy this again?

the NY times, cnn and seemingly everyone are saying that it is just not worth it at this point.

I have two of them waiting to be bought on ebay and i don't think i'll sell them with the other 20 thousand PS3's.

* The hardware looks great / I have a a stylish console that's a work of art.

* Wireless controller is light and feels great / I have the best controller ever made already.

* Great-looking Blu-ray movie playback / Up-scaling DVD looks great and the HD-DVD player is out of this world.

* Price is low for a Bluy-ray player / I have a high def Tivo- slash HD-DVD player-Video game console- Juke box- video phone with MS's console.

* A lot of multimedia options / I have a PC-MS's inovation-state of the art media.

I guess i'll give my PS3's away for a gift or resort to selling the 60 gigers at retail price.

"Alas, if you don't have a set that does 1080i or 1080p, you're going to be forced into 480p which is far less impressive. PS3's lack of a scaler bites it again. 720p output is not available on the titles we tested."
So let me get this right.. if you don't have 720p and only have 1080i for games, then you're scaled to 480p. For movies, if have 720p, but don't have 1080i/p then you get 480p? Are there TVs that have 720p and not 1080i/p?

another job well done.

it's bad enough that less than 70-80% of the public doesn't have HDTV's, so let's punish another 1/4 of those that do.

No every tv that has 720p also carries 1080i...and they didn't even give this a number score when in fact he says that you can give points back if they improve stuff...so am I missin something? Or was it just the good, the bad, and the ugly being the score
