A mixed bag for Nintendo as Wii U sales hit 65K in August, analyst says

Sales for the US market are up 111 percent compared with the same period last year, but are dwarfed by the sheer number of PlayStation 4 and Xbox One consoles sold in the same period.

The story is too old to be commented.
BrandanT1194d ago

Pachter only estimates and guesses every time he says something. He never states any in depth analysis to explain his reasoning. In fact, I never have seen any analysis deeper than the estimated numbers he says for the entire time.

Pachter said that the Xbox One has sold more than the Wii U in August but, haven't all the other news and rumours swamped his opinion by saying the Wii U has been outselling the Xbox One?

This is just classical Pachter stating his shallow numbers again. Why would he know anything about Nintendo and/or the entire gaming industry? He's the one who said game consoles would be dead by now.

Concertoine1194d ago (Edited 1194d ago )

Hes talking specifically about the US market, to be clear. Worldwide the Wii U outsells it because Nintendo has more worldwide appeal, but MS has universally had more appeal in the US.

Lol Chrono using his favorite picture for Wii U articles.

Still to put this into perspective last year August had Pikmin 3, the first big Wii U game in 9 months. This year it sold twice as much with no major release in August, or in the past 3 months. Make of that what you will.

BitbyDeath1194d ago

Yup, so basically the PS4 is on the Wii track, Wii U is on the PS3 track and Xbox is on the Xbox track.

Concertoine1194d ago (Edited 1194d ago )

I wouldn't put the Wii U up to the PS3 just yet. There's doubts as to whether or not it'll even pass the Gamecube lifetime.

Still, I've never seen one console so rigorously supported by a lone company since the PS3. If Nintendo's essentially sole effort is going head to head with the Xbox One which is a combined effort between MS and third parties, that is pretty impressive for Nintendo and a cause of concern for MS.

MacDonagh1194d ago

Umm, the Wii track was utterly insane. People say that selling ten million is a good number for the PS4 but the Wii was selling millions of consoles in months and would've sold more if they didn't struggle to keep up with demand.

Chrischi19881194d ago

Lol, according to Pachter estimates^^

Why not give us real numbers, instead of some guy, who is even worse than VGChartz in that department. And worldwide the Wii U outsold the Xbox1.

ABizzel11194d ago (Edited 1194d ago )

Wii U isn't on PS3 track at all. This is August of year 2 for them and they're at just over 7 million, the PS3 was almost at 15m units WW by then, the 360 was at 11m in the same time frame (August of year 2), and the Wii was over 31m units.

If anything it's the next N64, games which is both good and bad. Good because the N64 had some classic and timeless exclusives, and Nintendo seems to finally be doubling down on exclusives, but bad because the N64 only had 33m in sales.

I expect Nintendo to end 2014 with 11m console sold WW, and overall they can increase their lifetime numbers up to a respectable 50m, if they're willing to fight for it. They have games coming, but they need more support from 3rd parties even if it's Japanese only, they need to keep a steady stream of games coming each month, and most importantly they need to win on price. They have to cut price first next year (who ever cuts price in tax season first is going to take second place in for 2015).

A $249 Wii U, with Mario Maker, Yoshi Wolly World, Xenoblade, Kirby Rainbow Curse, Splatoon, the big daddy exclusive Zelda, and possibly more exclusives shown at E3 and TGS 2015, and the Wii U can ride out 2015 and 2016 without any trouble. A few killer apps and they're golden:

*StarFox 2015
*Pokemon Z exclusive to Wii U holiday 2015, 3DS early 2016
*Pokken Fighter coming to Wii U early 2016
*Real Single Player 3D Mario first half of 2016
*Captain Falcon Action-Adventure game, Falcon Punch everything (could be like a 2D/3D Viewtiful Joe, get Platinum Games to make this)
*New Metroid Trilogy first game 2016 (epic space adventure, on the scale of Halo & Mass Effect, but still 100% Metroid)

Amiibo can also play a big part in that if they play their cards right.

OMG vote me for Nintendo President, I will get them in top condition.

Magicite1194d ago

My worst/best predictions:
PS4 is on PS1/PS2 track.
X1 is on N64/SNES track.
WiiU is on GC/N64 track.

Hopefully we see this number every month.

All_Consoles1194d ago

Why? Because you are a fanboy hater?

TongkatAli1194d ago

I don't see a comeback for the Wii U, someone is going to want one then they're going to read this and they aren't going to buy a failure, what a fail.

That year head start wasn't enough.

KaladinStormblessed1194d ago

I'm sorry but what failure are we talking about here? The one that's outselling Xbox one? The one with its heaviest hitters still in the pipeline? The Wii U while not a runaway success (yet) is definitely not a failure. I look at the facts and don't make dumb opinions that have nothing to back it up.

TongkatAli1194d ago (Edited 1194d ago )

What heavy hitters ? Are you talking about those action figures ? Or that middle aged woman with the soccer mom haircut ? Smash Bros is a heavy hitter, but I don't see it changing its fortune, the core fans are going to buy, it will do good then the sales are going to die down.

65 K for Nintendo is horrible, they aren't use to this. Wii U is a fail they haven't felt in a long time, Xbox One is going to catch up to it because of North America.

Microsoft is probably going to pay websites to call it a fail, spread that propaganda. The Wii did amazing last gen because of the hype, it doesn't have that this time.

The "pathetic" casuals aren't biting the bait this time.

randomass1711193d ago

I really don't understand why people are still using that quote from Miyamoto against Nintendo. Nintendo not liking casual gaming is a GOOD thing last time I checked.

MacDonagh1194d ago

Not as big of a failure as the Vita. Dangenrompa definitely saved the Vita didn't it?

It must be great to have a product being fully supported by it's company.

Dunban671193d ago

The Vita has sold more than 1.6 million more than Wii u

MacDonagh1193d ago

See how long that lasts Dunban. Nintendo will at least support the Wii U while Sony has left the Vita to fester and die.

KaladinStormblessed1194d ago (Edited 1194d ago )

The Wii U is the most "Hardcore" Platform out there right now. And yes Smash will move units, I've been around lots of sites and keep seeing lots of people saying they're waiting for smash and others to buy a WiiU.

And what heavy hitters? Oh I don't know, maybe Smash, Bayonetta, Xenoblade, Zelda, and Starfox. Not to mention a lot of other notable titles like Captain Toad, Hyrule Warriors, Devils Third, and Splatoon. And where the hell does Pachter get his numbers? His dumb little brain that's where. NPD hasn't published it's results yet, and even so, 65k with no big name games recently out or coming for another month or so is not bad. And don't act like The U.S. Is the only gaming market. Oh and let me know when XB1 catches up...sorry IF XB1 catches up.

MacDonagh1194d ago (Edited 1194d ago )

@WackyVee Shortly after Mario Kart 8's UK launch, it was announced that Wii U console sales had risen 666% in the country, with Mario Kart 8 bundles accounting for 82% of the units sold.

Wouldn't count Pikmin or DK as heavy hitters but more along the lines of placeholders. Still better than anything that the X1 has come out with but I digress.

New Super Mario Bros U is the best selling game on the Wii U with 4.16 million units worldwide. Mario 3D World is the third selling game with 2.17 million worldwide. ZombiU bombed because Ubisoft expected absurd numbers from a rejiggered port of a multiplatform title called Killer Rabbids from Outer Space. 500K to 3.5 million Wii U's only a year ago isn't a bad attachment rate. Lego City Undercover and Wonderful 101 were victims of bad timing, releasing in months were games were coming out on other consoles, as I sincerely doubt that any real gamer is merely limited to one console. Bioshock Infinite, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil 6 came out when Lego City Undercover was released. GTA V was released when the Wonderful 101 was out and was ignored because GTA is a different beast.

While the Wii U may only hit Gamecube numbers and perhaps the X1 may outsell it but it will not have better games. The sad fact of the matter is that the Wii U is simply the best console out there at the moment while the Sony fans and the Microsoft fans twiddle their thumbs until holiday 2015.

Keep justifying your purchase.

ChickenOfTheCaveMan1194d ago

Btw, I don't know who says I was trolling, it was barely an opinion, more facts based on what happened to date with the Wii U.

@MacDonagh I agree that Zombi U was never gonna be a hit, but I classified it as a meant to be heavy hitter because the Nintendo N4G people wouldn't stop bragging about this game and how clever it was. DK a placeholder, maybe, but Pikmin is the only game I wish was on the PS4 from the Nintendo bunch, I don't understand why there's no love for it.

I won't enter your best console talk, because I'll be tagged as trolling once more for sure if I do so, but I don't agree one bit.

KaladinStormblessed1194d ago (Edited 1194d ago )

@WackyVee Out of all the games you mentioned ony 2 could be considered "heavy hitters" That's Mario Kart and maybe 3d world. Except I don't count 3D world as a heavy hitter. Mario kart failing to sell consoles? Have you been paying attention to anything? Since Mario Kart WiiU sales have Picked up a ton.

So with it's at most two heavy hitters thus far it's been picking up pretty well in sales and with even bigger games coming it's only going to get better. And the only big games I can see coming to XB1 is Halo and SSO, Which will definitely sell consoles but will it outsell WiiU? I really don't know but we'll see soon enough.

MacDonagh1193d ago

@WackyVee "I agree that Zombi U was never gonna be a hit, but I classified it as a meant to be heavy hitter because the Nintendo N4G people wouldn't stop bragging about this game and how clever it was. Zombi U is a good game but the fact of the matter is that Ubisoft overestimated it's appeal. Where are these Pikmen 3 and DK supporters? They are good games because I've got them. Why would you only want Pikmen 3? There are plenty of games that people would like a good shot of. You'd rather play Knack instead of 3D World?

Alright.

"I won't enter your best console talk, because I'll be tagged as trolling once more for sure if I do so, but I don't agree one bit."

You don't have to agree. Just get a Wii U, play the damn thing and decide for yourself. In my view; it's the only console that actually has games. Beats waiting around until holiday 2015.

frezhblunts1193d ago

I agree Kaladin, to my surprise games like donkey kong is quite challenging for me compared to the normal shooter.

Big_Game_Hunters1193d ago (Edited 1193d ago )

Are you just buttmad because wiiu has the highest Rated retail exclusives this generation thus proving Nintendo has the best exclusives based on reviews?? Thats not going to change anytime soon either with games like Bayonetta, X, Smash, Zelda pretty much guaranteed to get 90+ scores.
Have fun playing sales..

Hold up - Pachter who just said that Nintendo should quit making hardware is the source of these numbers? HAH! N4G will allow any bad news that isn't related to Sony, no matter how asinine it is.

Patcher is about as accurate as US airstrikes.
