Oh, is that a zombie dog crashing unexpectedly though a window? No, thank you.
Nothing has ever been as scary as Amnesia dark Descent for me. Not only was it disturbing and nightmarish as hell, but it also managed to pull you in with a feeling of complete helplessness and isolation.
Hope it makes it to consoles!
I stopped at #20, Zelda lol Someone wanna make a list so we don't have to page through 20 slides?
A buddy of mine couldn't play the old Aliens vs Predator PC game cus the audio freaked him out so much. Not sure I'd add Resident Evil 4 on that list. I never found it scary. In fact, I disagree with a few on the list.
At least half of that list is garbage. Half of those games aren't scary at all. Dead Space, Resident Evil 4, and Majora's Mask? Really? Is the author of this article a 6 year old?
RE4 is my favorite game of all time!
What, why? It ruined the RE franchise by becoming an action based game, instead of sticking to a horror survival game. Furthermore it was not scary.
Condemned, Dead Space and Amnesia are damned disturbing games. But for me, Silent Hill 2 still is the absolute definition of a nightmare. The controls sucked, the camera fought you half the time, but the brilliant enemy design, coupled with a unique setting and Akira Yamaoka's ingenious score make for a game that I refuse to play ever again alone.
Jump scares lose the effect after they have happened, substance and atmosphere are the true fear in video-games, Dead Space, the previous Resident Evil games, previous Silent Hills, Project Siren etc linger because of the vibe given. P.T has the atmosphere and the jump scares, although the jumpscares no longer scare me, the forever changing hallway still gives me the creeps.
P.T was pretty great, I agree jumpscare tactics don't usually work well. However the atmosphere was so creepy as hell. I used to have dreams/nightmares like this when I was a kid.
Very similair with me, very Japanese horror esque which is the absolute scariest vibe horror can give, Jumpscares will never last as they don't have value after the first scare, but the uneasy, unsafe feeling of walking around is horror. Even with a little dash of Survival horror thrown in there.
the battle with verdugo in the sewers (pro difficulty) made me poo myself - resi 4
Outlast was pretty scary..
PT is the scariest I've played and it's a teaser even though it's a game in its own right.
Was excited to see Silent Hill 2 as the top spot! One of my first games for Playstation 2. I remember I was 18 and it was the first time I had to show my ID to the guy at Babbages/EB Games. I would play that game at night and after stopping, I would seriously have trouble sleeping! I would actually try to play all night until the sun came up so I didn't have to fall asleep with the light on haha. Scariest atmosphere ever for me!
